up the most beautiful bunch. Like a ray of happiness.

The couch is old and one that they probably inherited when they bought the cabin. It’s a dark green velour fabric, and there’s another colored quilt draped along the back of it that matches the one on the bed. My mind drifts off to wonder if Cassie made these.

I didn’t notice any television yesterday, but you wouldn’t even need one up here. With so much to look at and the feel of nature around you, it’s time to check out of reality for a while. I can imagine in winter lying on the fluffy rug in front of the open fireplace. Naked, of course, a few pillows and a lot of hot loving happening.

The sad thing is that I know I won’t still be here by winter. My court case is getting closer, and I will either get my life back, wherever that may be, or go into hiding again, which could be anywhere. Although I would love it to be here, I would never imagine putting Ghost and his family in any more danger than they’re in. I already feel guilty for the situation I have put them in just by turning up on their doorstep yesterday.

“Why are you thinking so hard? I thought I would have worn you out enough last night that there is no way your brain would be working this morning.” Kurt’s breath on my neck then develops into soft morning kisses.

“No matter what, this brain never stops. That’s why I started writing, thinking it would empty out my thoughts, but instead it just made it create them faster and the stories got bigger and more detailed.” I push my body back against his, wanting to be as close as possible.

“Oh, they’re detailed alright. From what I’ve read, nothing is left to the imagination.” His hands start to wander on my body. I can feel my cheeks flush a little from what he is insinuating. Yet I know what happened after he read those chapters, and I can’t say I’m disappointed with what it stirred in him.

Both of us just lie here silent, while his hands are running up and down my arms that are wrapped around my middle.

“I’m going to miss writing. Davina has all my files, and I wasn’t allowed to bring my laptop or phone. I’ve lost everything.” Even knowing I can start again one day, it still leaves a pain in my heart. Plus, I lost my Kurt journal that although was for my eyes only, it was some of my deepest inner thoughts.

Kurt moves away from behind me, his arms sliding from around me.

“Where are you going?” I feel like I’ve just lost all my heat, once his skin is no longer touching mine.

“Hold that thought for a moment,” he mumbles as I roll onto my back and see his naked ass retreating across the room to the cupboard near the window.

“What thought? I can’t think of anything at the moment except for how hot your perfect ass looks right now.” As I’m giggling at myself, he turns to look at me, rolling his eyes as he carries a box back to bed with him. Sadly, the box is covering the important body part I was wanting to see naked again this morning.

“Eyes up here, woman.” Kurt smiles at me and points to his eyes as I poke my tongue out at him. Crawling onto the bed next to me, he crosses his legs and then draws the sheet over his lap.

“No fair. I was enjoying the morning show.” Sitting up next to him, I lean back against the headboard, pulling up the sheet over my breasts, because two can play at this game.

“Part of me felt terrible when I did this, but I hope you’ll forgive me,” he says, holding out the box to me.

I’m uncertain how to feel or what that means. “I don’t know if I want to open it,” I say, hesitating as he just smiles.

“It’s a present, don’t be scared of it. You know I wouldn’t give you anything that would upset you.”

“Then why did you feel terrible?”

“Just open it, Asha, then I’ll explain. Seriously, were you like this as a kid with surprises?” He looks at me now with a more serious expression.

“No, the exact opposite, but over the last few years, surprises have never been much fun. In fact, I haven’t even had a birthday present in the last four years, so yeah, me and surprises stopped being friends.” I didn’t realize how much that had hurt me over the years until just now when it slipped out.

“Oh, baby, that’s awful. Don’t worry, I’ll make up for that on every birthday from now on. I promise. Now open it.”

Slowly lifting the lid of the plain brown box, I see that it’s not wrapped like a present, but the anticipation on Kurt’s face tells me it’s something he is pleased with himself about.

“Oh, Kurt!” I can’t help but squeal when I see a brand-new laptop looking back at me in the box. “I know I don’t have my files, but at least I can start writing and not let the bad gremlins in my head take hold. My stories are my happy place, and they help to keep the darkness at bay.”

Leaning forward, he kisses me lightly on my forehead and whispers, “I helped Ghost hack your computer, and he has reinstalled all your files off your computer. You haven’t lost one single word.” Pulling back, he looks so damn proud of himself.

I stare at him in total shock. I can’t believe, with everything that was going on around us, he thought to do this for me.

Carefully I place the computer on the little table next to the bed. Not saying a word, I turn back and lunge for him, kissing him all over like crazy.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you.” I plaster his face with so many kisses, he is covered in my germs.

“I’m
