squeezed back. Hearing a supermodel who risked her life for yours tell you how amazing you were was overwhelming. I wanted to kiss her but I knew Aura, Iyse, and Kuma were watching and would likely gossip. I didn’t want to give them any ideas. Neither did I want to send the wrong message to Theia. A chaste goodbye kiss was one thing, but I wanted more than that and I got the impression Theia did too. I may have been projecting my desires onto her, but she had never given me vibes this strong before.

“Rest up,” I said, squeezing her hand warmly. “Call me if you need me.” I didn’t add, “in the next few hours.” I would be gone shortly after that.

“You do the same,” Theia smiled, squeezing back.

I didn’t want to let go of her hand. I’d known Theia all of four days, and I’d almost lost her tonight for the second time since I got here. Life on Zalaxia was far from the idyllic fantasy I’d thought it would be when I’d left Earth. Making matters worse, I was the one putting Theia in harm’s way day after day. She would probably live longer without me around. She’d be safer in the Royal Kingdom with some do-nothing king who never risked his own life going on insane adventures, and by extension risk the lives of his loyal Shock Knights. They deserved better.

The more I thought about Theia, the more I felt like I couldn’t say goodbye to her — no, didn’t want to say goodbye — and that meant I should probably go without ever saying it. But there was one important thing I wanted to tell her before I never saw her again.

“Hey, Theia?” I muttered.

“Yes, my king?”

“You make me a better man,” I said solemnly, holding back intense emotion. It was the highest compliment I could pay her.

She squeezed my hand hard and her green eyes watered with her own emotion. Her full lips worked over some words she wasn’t willing to say.

I wanted to stick around long enough to hear them, even if I had to wait weeks or months or years, but…

—LEAVE ZALAXIA IMMEDIATELY OR DIE!—

That memory came hammering back and I felt the dragon crushing my ribs until they cracked, felt my shoulder ripping from its socket and my elbow exploding like a grenade. I winced slightly, feeling phantom pain like everything was breaking again. Or that was my heart breaking at the thought of saying goodbye to Theia forever. But it was for the best. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that if she had feelings for me, they wouldn’t do her or me any good if I was dead.

“Is something wrong, my king?”

“No. Just tired. Rest up,” I said before walking out and never looking back.

My mind was made up.

I was leaving Zalaxia permanently.

The only thing left to do was say goodbye to the Bombshells.

I owed them that.

Maybe I’d treat myself to a goodbye-orgy with some willing woman or twenty before leaving the planet. But if I did that, I definitely wouldn’t be staying past tomorrow. How could I? I wouldn’t be able to look Oia in the eyes. Or Captain Theia, for that matter. What kind of good man broke his promise to a good woman like Oia just so he could get laid four dozen times in half as many hours?

Not this one.

—: Chapter 122 :—

“May I have a moment, my king?” Colonel Sadys said in the quiet corridor that led to the recovery room where the Bombshells were sleeping.

“Sure,” I whispered and walked toward her.

“I heard you had quite the adventure tonight,” Sadys said, pursing her plump lips and looking annoyingly sexy as hell in her white V-cut uniform with its red dominatrix collar.

“Let’s talk over here,” I said, leading her into the nearest empty recovery room. I waved my hand over the hexagonal access panel, closing the hatch.

Sadys said pointedly, “Is it true you had a problem with your ring tonight?”

“We all did,” I said, immediately defensive. “Why?”

“No reason. Just curious. It bears on base defense. Is it working now? Your ring?”

“Are you asking for yourself? Or a friend named Hydra?”

“Why would I do that?” Sadys snorted.

“Never mind. What do you want?”

“I wanted to talk to you about Corporal Syx.”

“What about her?”

“Don’t you think it’s odd she was with you when your ring stopped working?”

“It hadn’t crossed my mind.”

“What was she doing with you on your… little adventure?”

I smirked at Sadys because she was mocking my desire to make sure Violet was safe and sound, even if Sadys didn’t know it.

“Well?” Sadys pressed.

“I was exploring the jungle. Getting a lay of the land in case we’re attacked again.”

“Are you sure you weren’t getting the lay of Corporal Syx?”

“What?” I snorted. “Not even.”

“Devilkin women like her have quite a reputation,” Sadys said suggestively.

“She wasn’t my first, if that’s what you’re getting at, Colonel.”

“Oh, no, not at all, my king!” She smiled insincerely. “If it wasn’t that… I can’t help but wonder how it is you found yourself playing directly into a pirate trap earlier this evening?”

“Playing into? It was pure chance,” I argued.

“I’m not so sure. How else would pirates know the king’s exact position? It’s as if they were lying in wait for your arrival, my king. Like someone led you there.”

“Who, Corporal Syx?”

Sadys nodded, “This sounds like the sort of thing Corporal Syx and her kind might do if given half a chance, my king.”

“Her kind?”

“You know, Xenos,” Sadys said in a low voice.

“As opposed to Conks,” I countered with a knowing glare.

“A vulgar term,” said the Ice Queen of All Conks.

“Any more vulgar than Xeno?”

“Absolutely,” Sadys huffed as if she were making perfect sense. “Were you a Xeno like the previous king, I would—”

“You mean the fish alien I killed?”

“Yes, him. Were you a Xeno like him, detestable little thing when he wasn’t using his ring to enhance his appearance,” Sadys said with ample disgust, “I might understand your disdain
