with love.

To be declared her Primary.

It was the only thing that made sense. This instinct to protect and please her had to be the blossoming workings of love.

Love.

Somehow, just reaching that conclusion had lifted a weight from my chest. What I had wanted this whole time was to be loved.

The extreme jealousy that I had felt whenever I came across Xylo had been rooted in a need to be loved like he was.

Loved and supported by my fathers, no matter what profession I entered.

Loved by my mentors in a way that I had wished my fathers would, making me angry that they were his instead of mine.

Loved by the staff as a hero in the infirmary for my knowledge of other species.

Loved by the patient who had become Xylo’s nestqueen, a gift that—in my mind—could’ve been mine.

Loved by a nestqueen and clan, something that I never had.

Now that I lay in bed with the beginnings of my clan, I could thank the Stars for leading Kaica to me. Maybe I was a masochist; instead of shying away from her aggressive behavior, I had let one of the most deadly females in the galaxy claim me.

When Xylo woke from his slumber, I would make sure to apologize for all the things that I had done out of jealousy since I had met him.

Without him, I might never have held my nestqueen in my arms.

Sixteen

KAICA

I couldn’t describe how I felt waking up sandwiched between my two males, their appendages wrapped securely around me as if they were afraid I would somehow disappear in the night.

Maybe if I were Kaede, I would slip away.

I bit my tongue to prevent myself from laughing at the image of Chyox and Usthu holding each other lovingly with appendages entwined. What a sight it would be, watching them wake up and realize it wasn’t me they had been holding.

Content.

That was the feeling.

Waking up to report as a unit, as a clan, to the infirmary for our daily shift. That was what I had been missing the whole time.

While I loved my siblings, I had never felt included in the Fab Five. They all specialized in offensive tactics, while my nature was defensive—healing. I hadn’t felt needed unless one of my siblings had decided to test the Fates.

Two other healers who understood the daily struggles we faced and could work out unique problems made me feel more part of a team than I ever had before.

Chyox was more serious and Usthu was more playful, but together, I loved how they balanced each other out. Our future would be amazing, especially after we resolved our current hardships.

I considered asking Z about adding an extension to the mountain base to make the bunker more family-friendly. Once things began to settle down, we would need a permanent place for visitors to stay. The villa was suited for single guests, but visitors who brought their family would need a larger apartment. The more I thought about it, the more I believed we needed an extended family apartment complex built along the edge of the villa’s plateau.

What was I doing?

Was this what falling in love felt like?

This sudden need to spend every second with my clan, thinking about our future, was all I could focus on at the moment.

Were they led to me by the Stars to fulfill the will of the Fates?

I refused to believe that I was a game piece to a group of cosmic entities, and yet…

Opening my eyes, I scanned my room for the pitcher that Usthu had given me.

It sat on my desk, gleaming in the morning sunlight pouring through the window. Something green peeked above the fertile brown soil. Using my implant to zoom closer, my mouth dropped in awe.

Inside the pitcher, the flower seed had sprouted, taking in its first glimpse of light.

Just like the seed Usthu had gifted me, our clan’s bonds would grow to face our destiny together. After much care, I had a feeling our growing love would blossom into something beautiful, too.
