Damien fell asleep next to her. The once tortured ghosts that haunted him were laid to rest with each soft rise and fall of her chest.
Chapter Six
The following morning, the clouds responsible for the rain the day before broke allowing the rays of the sun to shine in through the window of Jill’s room. The light in his eyes made Damien raise his arm to try and block the piercing rays. He rubbed them as he rolled onto his back, a slight groan escaped him as he stretched his arms above his head. He rose up to find he was alone. The blanket they’d shared fell to his hips.
What time is it? Damien thought, reaching for the bedside table where he left his phone. It was already past 1:00 pm.
He got up out of the bed and looked around quickly. His shirt had been set down on the chair next to the desk in the corner. Damien took it and put it on quickly before he grabbed his backpack.
Out in the hall, it appeared vacant. No one seemed to be awake yet so Damien made sure to keep quiet as he descended the stairs.
Kain waited at the bottom of the stairs, drinking coffee and reading the paper. “Where are you off to in such a hurry?”
“I was going to ask Jill for the ride back to the college so I could get my truck. Do you know where she is?”
“Jillian went to the school with Gabriel early this morning to get your truck. She didn’t want to wake you since the two of you had a late night. I promised her I would watch out for you just in case.” Kain replied, calmly, folding the paper and setting it down on one of the workout benches.
“Kain, what am I doing? I’m not a werewolf or a vampire.”
Kain winced. “Lycan, please. We don't appreciate that word.”
Damien forgot what Jill said about lycans feeling insulted at being called werewolves. She never did tell him why.
“Sorry. I’m not a lycan either. I still don’t get the full extent of what’s going on.”
“Damien, I know you have been led to believe you have to pretend to be something you clearly are not. You are not human. No more than anyone in this gym. You may not be able to transform or drink blood, this is true. However, how many humans do you know can take a hit by a vampire into a dumpster and suffer a broken leg only to have it heal completely in a few days,” Kain asked, his gaze locked on Damien.
Damien looked down at the floor. His muscles tensed all throughout his body at the lycan’s words.
“When was the last time you felt comfortable around them? Have you ever truly felt like you fit in man’s world? You still feel like they're silently judging you. Like they're seeing you as some sort of outcast. You aren't a freak, Damien. You have been fighting against your true nature for years. Give it time. I know you will come to see us as family.”
“Kain!”A call of challenge from Scott could be heard echoing through the gym along with his storming footsteps across the wood floor.
Kain rolled his eyes under his reading glasses as Scott screamed his name. “Think about what I've said. I know you feel in your heart I am right.” Kain threw a towel over his shoulder.
Damien watched the lycan’s back as he walked away. Kain was beyond wise, someone Damien quickly found himself looking up to.

After he left the gym, Damien decided to go for a run to think. He began to realize what Kain said fell in line with the realization he came to the night he’d imagined Jill in his shower. He'd never truthfully felt at home with normal people since his accident. Nothing had changed in the ten years he had been gone. It was as though the town had been suspended in time as if by some spell.
The phone in his pocket began to vibrate and ring. It made him stop in the middle of the country road just outside of town to answer it so he could keep listening to his music.
“Rob, what’s up?” Damien asked, his breath labored from his run.
“Hey, D. Have you seen, Chels? She hasn’t really been answering any of the calls or texts I’ve sent.” Rob’s voice sounded strained with concern.
“No. I haven’t. We had lunch on the campus but then she left. She seemed pretty upset. I just thought she was mad at me.” Damien’s reply was laced with his own concern.
Even if he didn’t feel the same for Chelsea as she did for him, he still saw her as a good friend.
“Damn. Hope she’s okay.”
“I’m betting she’s fine, Rob. You know how she gets when she’s pouting. She’s probably with one of her girlfriends she’s always chatting with online.”
“Yeah, I bet you’re right. Hey, you want to go see that new gory movie in the theater? Have some guy time?” Rob replied, his mood appeared to have lightened.
“Sure. Just let me get back to my house. I’ll see you around seven tonight, sound good?”
“Cool, see you then.”
Damien hung up, taking a deep breath as he turned around to head back to the gym.
By the time Damien made it back, Jill was standing next to his truck with his backpack and keys in response to a quick text he’d sent her after he got off the phone with Rob.
“Enjoy your movie tonight, Damien. Just please remember what I told you about the vampires. Be careful and stay alert. Text or call after you get out t to let me
