get to you. We’ll have this, let him sweat it out with his brief for a while and then start the interview from the beginning again, if we have to. I’m not going to let the bastard win. We’ve got all the evidence we need to convict the bastard, anyway.”

Carla nodded and took the proffered cup from Sara. “He’s going to be a tough one to crack, but as you say, how can he ignore all the evidence which points to him? He can’t, not really.”

“Yep, it’s a matter of us being patient and grinding him down until he admits the truth. We’ll give it a few more hours in there and do the same, then leave the room, let him stew and vent his anger on his solicitor and start all over again, if we have to. I refuse to let this bastard win.”

“You’re made of stronger stuff than I am.”

“Sorry to interrupt,” Craig began, “I take it things aren’t going too well in there then?”

“That’s an understatement. Sorry, guys, I wasn’t intentionally keeping you out of the loop. So far, the interview hasn’t gone according to plan. In spite of all the evidence I’ve presented him with, he’s flat out denying both murders.”

Craig scratched his head. “Okay, maybe start off denying it until you can prove otherwise, but then I would’ve thought he’d have caved in. Is that the way it works?”

“Normally, yes. However, this time, he’s being resolute we’ve got it wrong.”

Carla sighed. “And yet, was it my imagination that when we walked into the room he seemed defeated?”

Sara thought back and clicked her fingers. “You’re right. Can you pinpoint when his demeanour changed, Carla?”

Her partner blew out a breath and tapped a pen on the desk as she thought. “I could be wrong, but around the time you mentioned the second victim.”

Sara contemplated her suggestion. “Maybe, I can’t say I noticed, I was too busy trying to pin him down.” She sipped at her drink. “The change in MO is a peculiar one. I mean, yes, I know we’ve dealt with criminals before where they’ve changed MO to try and get us off the scent, but that’s been over a few months. We’re talking less than twenty-four hours between the crimes here.”

“It does seem strange,” Carla admitted. She downed the rest of her coffee.

Sara did the same. “Something we need to consider going forward. All right, we’ll get back to it. Maybe the solicitor has managed to work his magic in our absence. We’ll soon find out. See you laters!”

Sara and Carla threw their empty cups in the bin as they passed and took a slow and steady trip back downstairs. “How have things been?” Sara asked Jon, still standing guard outside the room.

He lowered his voice to reply, “Things settled down when you left.”

“I know I shouldn’t ask, but I’m going to anyway. Did you overhear anything of interest?”

“Sorry, nothing new. He just repeated what he’d been saying to you during the interview.”

Sara nodded. “Okay, it was worth a shot. Let’s get back to it, folks. I sense a long few hours ahead of us.” Sara pinned another smile in place and entered the room. She and Carla sat at the desk while Jon took up his position at the back of the room once more.

Carla set the recorder going and Sara asked, “I hope the break was beneficial and that Mr Jordan has put you on the right path, Jo?”

“He hasn’t, so it was a waste of time you leaving the room. I’ve got nothing further to add to what I’ve already said.”

“I see. Well, I have all the time in the world. My colleague will tell you, I don’t have much of a home life and tend to spend most of my spare time at work, so don’t think I’ll be giving in trying to seek the truth anytime soon. Just warning you.”

Carla nodded and said, “It’s true. Once the inspector decides to sink her teeth into something, she rarely lets go.”

“So fucking what! I couldn’t give a shit if you have a decent home life or not, I’m not surprised a bitch like you doesn’t have a significant other waiting for you.”

“I didn’t say that. My husband accepts I’m a professional and that I have exceptional standards to uphold. Oh, where were we? Ah, yes. We left you having a word with Mr Jordan. What was the outcome?” Sara directed her question to the duty solicitor.

“My client is steadfast in his decision that he’s done nothing wrong. He has reiterated his innocence time and time again, and yet you’re insisting on pushing the issue, Inspector. I have to say, I don’t see the object in continually going around in circles.”

“Don’t you? Even though two women have lost their lives, and we have evidence to back up our claims that your client was involved in both crimes? Shame on you, Mr Jordan.”

The solicitor grinned, looked at his notebook and jotted something down.

“Let’s start from the beginning, Jo. By the way, your coat and hat are on the way to the lab now; we should have the results back in a few days. Until that time, you’ll be remaining in custody. It’s up to you how we proceed. My advice would be to tell the truth, it’s only going to hamper your future if you continually deny your involvement in the crimes.”

“So be it. Because, lady, that’s exactly what I fucking intend on doing. You can’t pin something on me just because you have the evidence to back it up.”

Sara frowned. “Really? How do you work that one out? That’s exactly how these things go down. It’s up to you to prove your innocence. Denying you were at certain places at a specific time just doesn’t cut it.” She tapped both crime scene photos. “Especially as we have the evidence to the contrary right here at our disposal. Not just any old evidence, actual solid evidence I’m talking about here. So, do yourself a
