Tucker boys' attention. After asking to use the motorcycle, he rolled the bike over to Kenny, who'd jumped to his feet, eager to learn how to ride like his brother.

While he handed over the instructions, showed Kenny how to shift, he stayed tuned into Bonnie's mood, knowing last time she doubted his ability to keep her son safe.

He couldn't sense that unease with Bonnie this time.

When he finished, he got Kenny going. It took three times to stop him and help him turn. Once he'd gone around the dirt track in the field, he joined Bonnie in the grass and pulled her over between his legs, letting her lean back against him.

After several minutes, she twined her fingers between his. "Why are you going on a ride so late at night?"

"Don't know."

"You never ask before you leave?"

"No."

She hummed. "It's cool how everyone gets along with the club, though. Most towns chase bikers away."

He watched Kenny ride in front of them. "Things are different in the mountains."

"I suppose." She turned her head and looked at him. "Is it dangerous?"

"What?"

"Riding with the club?"

"Living is dangerous." He kissed her forehead.

She paused. "Make sure you ride safely and watch the road."

That was such an odd thing to tell him to do. He was trained to ride better than most people. If something happened to him, the Alpha Bio Project would make him better.

Then, he remembered. Her husband had died in an automobile accident.

"I'll be fine."

She nodded and turned back around to watch Kenny, who'd slowed to get Zach's attention and try to race him.

If Bonnie became involved with him, she would soon realize there was nothing to worry about. He could take care of himself.

Chapter Eighteen

Speeder rode up to The Shack with Trina. Bonnie closed and locked the door, having handed over the day's profits to Keenan a few minutes ago. Turning, she waved as she headed to her car.

"Bonnie? Can I talk to you a moment?" asked Speeder.

"Sure." She changed directions and approached him on the motorcycle. "What can I do for you?"

"I need to ride out later tonight. Can Trina spend the night at your place?" Speeder took his hands off the handlebar. "I can pick her up early in the morning before you have to go to work."

She stepped closer, feeling compassion for the single father who found himself suddenly having to juggle his life. But raising a daughter had to come before riding with his club. It wasn't like he was working around town during the day and needed a babysitter.

"Of course, Trina is always welcome at our house." She smiled at his daughter. " I was just getting ready to go home. Why don't you go ahead and hop in the car while I talk to your dad?"

Trina slid off the motorcycle without saying goodbye to her dad. Her backpack was stuffed until the pack dwarfed the girl. Bonnie waited until Trina got into the car and then turned to Speeder.

"I'll help you tonight, but you do have to find someone to stay with Trina at home. Sending her to a house with two teenage boys, one of those boys who that thinks Trina is special, is only setting them up for something to happen that's out of our control," she said.

Speeder frowned. "What do you mean?"

Could he be that clueless? There was a reason teenage pregnancy was so high. Hormones dictated their lives. Sex felt good. Curiosity about the opposite sex was like a game of cat and mouse.

"Trina and Zach like each other."

"I don't see why that's a problem." Speeder ran his hand over his hair. "It's good they get along. Trina's new in Avery Falls and could use some friends."

She needed to spell it out for him. "Teenagers have sex."

"They're having sex?"

She sighed. "Not that I know of, but if we give them too much time alone, it could happen. When Trina's at the house, I watch over them, but they are teenagers. They're obviously smart. Try to remember what you were like as a teenager and the ideas that went through your mind about the opposite sex, and you can figure out what's going through Trina and Zach's head."

Speeder looked off into the distance. Going by his silence, she must've gotten through to him.

"I'll see you in the morning." She stepped away and went to the car.

Speeder continued to sit on his motorcycle as she drove out of the gravel parking lot. Unable to hold her opinion in about Speeder, she glanced at Trina. "Men are strange."

Trina huffed in amusement. The first sign that there was personality underneath her quiet exterior.

"Not only your dad but Zach and Kenny. Anyone born with a penis." Feeling better, getting that off her chest, she kept going. "It's up to us women to make them smarter."

Trina smiled. "I'm all for that."

"Good." She pulled into the store parking lot. "The first lesson is if you want an orange float after dinner, you have to buy them yourself because no man is going to come up with the idea on their own."

With Trina at her side, she quickly purchased the orange pop and vanilla ice cream needed for tonight's spontaneous treat. Nothing made her feel better than indulging, and if she was right, Trina needed a boost today, too.

The boys were spread out on the couch at home, playing on their phones, when she walked in. She flashed a conspiracy look at Trina and cleared her throat, gaining Kenny and Zach's attention.

Only when they noticed Trina with her did they get up off the couch and help with the groceries. She went into the kitchen and turned on the alarm clock radio she'd picked up in town at the store last week and found the only station that was halfway decent that came in on the mountain. Luckily for her, it was an eighties rock station, sure to pep her up.

"What's for dinner?" Kenny looked inside the bag. "Hey, are we having floats?"

"Later." She smooched his cheek. "Help your
