Considering the cyborg spine contained enough energy to expand a Titanosaur up to 10,000,000 kg, it had to be storing a mountain of extractable energy.
The question was where?
Ring, I thought, show me the energy stored inside the cyborg spine in my HUD. Make condensed energy yellow and mass blue.
As usual, a 3D schematic appeared in my mental HUD. Every metal segment had four thick yellow discs of energy, each one sized to fit its given segment. The yellow discs in the largest spinal segments were huge. The size of cast-iron manhole covers.
The total physical battery volume was massive. Hundreds of kg’s worth. Nothing compared to Tesla’s — the company, not the inventor — 20 megawatt Hornsdale Energy Reserve in South Australia. The total volume of those battery-buildings filled a patch of land the size of a parking lot to a height of about 3 meters. That was literal metric tons of battery power.
But I’d bet these cyborg spinal batteries stored several orders of magnitude more power than 20 megawatts. If I had to guess, they stored more gigawatts than ten nuclear reactors generated annually. Because making 10 million kilograms of physical matter out of pure energy took enough freaking power to jumpstart a star.
Using my rings, I began an ENERGY extraction from the spine. I assumed it would go as slowly as my attempted MASS extraction had. Sure enough, my HUD’s “fuel” doughnut started creeping upward no quicker than it had when I’d tried to shrink Titano during battle. But it was creeping, meaning the energy was transferring to me. Gotta love wireless power. Yes, it’s a thing.
Since my earlier calculations of 25 to 50 minutes for a complete MASS extraction from Titano had been pure guesswork, and I had no idea how the current rate of my ring fuel gain correlated with power drain from the cyborg spine, I thought, Ring, as the batteries are drained of power, turn their HUD diagrams from bright yellow to black.
Call it a status bar.
No surprise, I didn’t immediately notice a color change. This would take a while. A timer would be nice.
Ring, do you have an estimated time? Can we put a timer up in my HUD?

Nice. Turned out, I’d been fairly accurate in my earlier estimates.
Assuming close proximity speeded the energy transfer, I loitered near the cyborg spine. Now it was time to hurry up and wait.
The guardswomen were still busy raving over their loudspeakers about how I’d subdued Titano. Apparently, their previous king wasn’t known for doing much of anything to help out.
“I’ve never seen anything so brave, my king,” one guardswoman said over loudspeaker.
I replied, “What, didn’t your last king fight gigantic dinosaurs like Titano and turn him into a giant blimp?”
That got resounding laughter and snorting, “No’s.”
One guardswoman said, “He never fought for anyone except himself.”
“Who didn’t?” I asked.
“The last king, my king.”
A second armored guardswoman said, “That’s not true. He’d give his life for us.”
“The skruck he would,” the first guardswoman retorted. “The last king didn’t give two shits for anybody but himself.”
“You’re a skrucking Xeno liar,” the second guardswomen said irritably.
“Me a liar?” the first woman snorted derisively. “I’ll show you a skrucking liar, you Conk bitch!”
“LADIES!” I barked over loudspeaker. “Stop. We don’t fight each other. That’s an order. It’s the law. A new decree. Our new normal. Have I made myself clear?”
“Yes, my king,” every woman said over loudspeaker while nodding their helmeted heads.
“Or do I need to tattoo it onto your foreheads?”
“No, my king,” they answered.
I checked my ENERGY timer.

In the distance, Sergeant Kane was leading a small group of guardswomen wearing heavy-duty blue power armor walking across the red dirt toward the emotional agitator, which lay where I’d left it.
“Sergeant Kane, what’s with the different armor?” I asked over comms.
“Bomb techs,” Kane replied, also on comms. “They’re wearing breach armor. My king.”
“Breach armor? What’s that?”
“Heavy duty protection for bomb blasts and rad leaks.”
“Rad as in radiation?”
“Yeah. For if the power core leaks. My king.”
“Good to know. Wait, do you think the cyborg spine is leaking radiation?”
“Could be. The techs’ll check.”
“Right. I’ll let you get to it.”
Fifteen minutes later, the cyborg spine’s batteries had turned from yellow to black in my HUD. My’ “fuel” doughnut was nearly full. It had circled almost completely around the clock from 6 to past 5 on the far side of the dial. It had never been this full before. That was the better part of 10,000,000 kg worth of transformational energy for you. Either way, with my fuel doughnut almost topped off, it meant I couldn’t shrink normal-sized Titano much more than I already had. Not that I had a reason to. Hopefully, now that I’d removed the emotional agitator, he’d be more docile.
But we had to do something with him. We couldn’t just leave him where he was snoozing peacefully.
Eventually, he’d wake up.
“KRUFF!” he snorted tiredly. His near eye opened halfway. The iris contracted as the light hit it and he took me in. After a moment, the eyelid drooped closed and he breathed evenly.
“Anyone want a pet?” I quipped.
Corporal Syx said enthusiastically, “I do!”
Another guardswoman said, “I don’t. He killed ten of ours already. And he’ll kill ten more the second we turn our backs on him.” She had a point. “We should torch him.”
“No, we should roast him for dinner,” a third said semi-seriously.
“Let me guess,” I said dryly, “Titanosaurs taste like chicken.”
“Chicken?” someone else said. “What’s a chicken?”
I laughed. That was Zalaxia for you. English might seem the same as Zalaxian, but there were plenty of vocabulary mismatches.
I said, “Serious question, everyone. Do you get food shipped in or hunt it from the jungle and/or grow your own? Or is that a question for Staff Sergeant Imi?”
“We get drop shipments from the Royal Kingdom my king,” Corporal Syx answered.
“Does that
