let us see what seats were already taken beforehand.

Given this movie was kind of a chick flick, and that it had been out for a couple of weeks, I wasn’t too surprised that it was only about half full. There were three levels of seats, separated by a fairly tall half-wall between each level, with the majority of people sitting in the middle and upper level. Thus, I’d picked a couple of seats right up against the wall separating the lower level from the one above it. That way it would give the feel of sitting in the very back of the theater, with almost no one else in our section.

Someone in the next row behind us would actually have to lean over in their seat pretty far in order to look down at us, which I doubted anyone would do.

When we sat down, with the seats being more like plush recliners, I wrapped my arm around her again, since I’d pretty much had it that way the whole time. She leaned right into me, readjusting in her seat to get comfortable, but didn’t bother touching the popcorn in her lap.

I wasn’t sure if her mind was on me, or if she was thinking about the last time she’d been to a theater, so I decided to ask her if I could have some of ‘her’ popcorn, even though I’d been the one to buy it. She looked up at me with a grin on her face, grabbing a couple of pieces and holding them up to slip into my mouth.

I teased her by intentionally being overeager, nipping her fingers with my lips a little as I snagged the popcorn. I was pleased that it made her giggle. I then grabbed a couple of pieces to stick in her mouth, repeating what we’d done with the ice cream.

The movie started after some previews, but I wasn’t particularly interested in the film to begin with, and feeding Heidi popcorn required my full attention. Alternatively, she did start focusing on the movie as it began, but after a few minutes she unexpectedly grabbed my hand after I’d given her a couple of pieces of popcorn.

I looked at her in confusion while she chewed, before she swallowed what she had and brought my hand closer. She then gently kissed my fingers, only to start licking the salt off.

Damn Heidi!

Once they were clean, she began to suck on each of my fingertips gently, and finally looked up at me with a flushed face, her lips slightly parted. I focused on her bottom lip, when I realized it was trembling just slightly.

I knew what that meant.

Holding her vulnerable gaze, I gently rested my hand against the side of her face, and I leaned a little towards her lips. Her chin raised just a tiny bit, prompting me to slowly lean more, until her soft full lips were touching mine.

The movie sucked ass.

Or at least, it probably would have, if I’d watched any of it.

16: Unpromising Lead

Winter Fowler

April 20, 2735 – 1 Day Later – Noon

“Dammit,” Winter hissed as she tapped on the power button to her computer again. But nothing happened. Even though it was plugged in, the screen was still black after ‘the blue screen of death’ flashed in her face, saying in tiny white letters that there was a critical error.

She sighed then, and tossed it onto the bed next to her, leaning back against the wall.

It wasn’t like she couldn’t afford to buy a new one – she had plenty of money at her disposal – but it was just the hassle of getting one and setting everything up the way she liked it. She also knew her data would be fine too, since it was all backed up on a secure cloud.

And if she was honest, she probably should have gotten a new one sooner, since hers was over five years old. However, that was one of her traits she struggled with – possession.

Once she owned something, it was hers.

Sure, she could share with others, but giving something up entirely was very difficult for her to do. Like her food. She had no problem giving some to Heidi, but would never give it up altogether.

And if someone tried to steal something from her, she’d become very aggressive, very quickly.

Taking a deep breath, she grabbed her phone and began browsing around for the most expensive, durable, top-of-the-line laptops she could find. She mostly ignored brands entirely, instead focusing on the highest specs she could get, no matter what price it was.

However, unexpectedly, a notification popped up, indicating she was getting a call…

From Jackie Hendricks.

Winter answered it and held it up to her ear. “Hello,” she said flatly.

Jackie didn’t waste any time. “We might have a lead that only someone of your talent could look into. It’s a long shot, but I didn’t want to tell Mr. Archer, only to have you refuse. So I’m asking you first.”

“I’m assuming this is related to the Sheriff case?”

“Yes, it is.” Jackie paused. “Of course, I can’t give you any more details unless you agree to the assignment. And you’ll be paid for your usual rate if you accept.”

Winter didn’t care about the money at this point, and normally she’d refuse even if they offered to increase her rate, which was already a pretty absurd amount. However, this was different.

“When do we leave?”

“You’ll take it?” Jackie asked in surprise.

“Yes.”

The woman sighed heavily. “Then meet me at the office, so I can go over the details with the two of you. I’m leaving right now.”

“Just us?” Winter clarified.

“Correct, it will just be the two of you. Being discreet will be essential, so a pair is a necessity.”

“Okay.”

Winter hung up, quickly dropping her phone on the bed to get changed to be in public. After all, her white-tiger fur drew way too much attention otherwise.
