Snow Fall
Snow falls on my head
a benediction
a prayer
down to the earth though it came from the sky
feathered and frozen
it brushes my cheeks
each flake a cold shimmer of recognition
times past
days iced over in memory
my eyes lift to the halo of light
where the sun would be
in a less beautiful moment
chill air quivers brightly
in the hollow of my chest
until it is released to mist
between my lips
and all around me snow falls
on my arms
on my eyelashes
on my shoulders
on my head
softening stark edges and muting bright colors
until we are one
beneath an all-encompassing blanket
of quiet
and frozen starshine.
Asperity of Snow
The icy silence approaches like an old friend,
Her puny diamonds descend from above,
Embracing me;
Drowning me.
Crows, stark against the Earth’s pale skin.
Trees, suffocated by purity, muffled by cold.
Their mottled brown,
The sole evidence of what was.
More fearful animals have confined themselves,
Ensuring refuge from her wrath.
A cold heart;
Without mercy.
With a frigid hand and unfeeling heart,
She extends her arm,
And holds to her bosom,
The lives of men, foolish and daring.
White skin, a reminder of death; calm and peaceful;
Chilly and fleeting;
Handsome and gratifying.
A harmony of contradiction.
She lays, bare-backed and dazzling,
Stubbornly immovable.
Until the celestial rays,
Banish her presence.
Sharp breath howls in my gelid ears,
Daggers of ice stab at my flesh.
She will not be exiled for long, and
Never forever.
She sleeps in the hearts of the youthful, and
The mellow alike.
Laying dormant as the seasons,
Pass her by.
Until the clouds bring about her coronation of the Earth;
And the yellow-painted carnations,
Once again,
Cower from her reign.
