A LEAP OVER THE OCEAN

1. The blue azure was looking bright and mystical
with vows in countless hues, yet grimly skeptical.
He looked with thoughtful eyes, the path the angels ply
and yelled aloud at friends,” In search of Ma, I’ll fly.”

2. Bull like, stretched he, his neck, lifted his head,
the mighty Hanuman, the Son of Winds;
all set to take the path so far untread;
a chilling challenge none had ever dared.

3. Over the bouncy emerald green pastures
he sauntered to and fro with wild gestures;
a gust of tempest like, besieging lees;
with arms and bosom firm; bulldozing trees;
as frightened birds took flight to skies, in teams
and scampered helter-skelter beasts with screams.

4. The mighty Mount Mahindra’s radiant with rocks
in natural opaque, snow-white, crimson and blue
with pines, cedars and Sals touching the skies and flocks
of birds carolling mystic tunes of great allure.

5. That’s where the protean demigods allay;
the Kinneras ballet, the Yekshas play;
the Gandharvas display their tuneful charms
and saints immerse in meditative calm.

6. On that summit of charming ambience
the Son of Winds looked like a Jumbo Prince;
lofty amongst hundreds of shying cubs
as rocks looked like pebbles and trees like shrubs.

7. He prayed the God of light, Lord Suryadev;
and bowed to Vayudev, the God of Squalls;
invoked the God of Life, Lord Brahmadev
and stood upright with thoughts of hefty hauls.”

8. Towards the East he turned again and prayed
his father, Vayudev, the Lord of Winds,
then turned towards the South, with eyes on bays
of farther end; but soul to Ram affined.

9. A swelling ocean like, on sight of waxing Moon,
he soared in size, touching the skies with splendid charm
and chanted high and loud the glorious name, “Hey Ram
at Your service, fulfilled will be my life so soon.”

10. He pressed his palms and feet against the ground
of Mount Mahindra, hard and firm and lo
that great fixture had shuddered wild and loud
as if it’s battered by a thunder blow.

11. Uprooted trees had showered flowers all around
adorning Mount Mahindra like flashy festoons.
Out-flowed from clefts of broken cliffs with sounds
aloud, lavas of fuming hot lagoons
of molten ores, swathing her like gem-crowns.

12. Died scores of animals under the pound
and wild crumble of that majestic Mound.
Serpents with marks of Swastikas on hoods
had spewed out venoms burning rocks and woods.

13. Those rocks and stones thus poisoned, blew with sounds
“Phedeel, phedeel” echoing those surrounds.
The herbs Ambrosial, abounding there
had failed to douse that great, horrendous flare.

14. Hermits had feared that mountain huge was blown
to pieces by some ghosts and fiends unknown.

15. And flew to skies aghast, Vidyadharas
with their loved ones, abandoning their urns
of gold with wines and tasty food; alas
as well their swords and shields, frightened and stunned.

16. From skies the sacred saints, the sages, pious
and scared Vidyadhara pairs; lascivious
had viewed the splitting Mountain crest with awe
and heard the Saranas utter hurrahs.

17. “Gigantic Hanuman is set to take a leap
over the hostile crocodiles’ domain; the deep;
for Ram; for apes his mates, a heady endeavour
indeed, to reach Lanka, the demons’ shore.”

18. At those divine tidings, the stunned celestials
had scanned around to find the Son of Winds on Mount
spreading in size; abounds, like another huge mount
alighted on Mainaka veiling it in style.

19. Exalted thus in form, with verve and guts,
the fearless Hanuman, the Son of Gusts
had tautened ears, ruffled his golden hair
and quaked his body once and raised his tail.

20. His eyes with great resolve and brawn bulging
he crouched on ground. Pressing firmly with palms
and bending legs he heaved up with a swing
into the skies exuding splendid charm.

21. The Mountain crashed under his feet; the winds
had whirled around, in spiralling dust rings;
the trees and rocks followed the Son of Winds
to deep azure like parting kith and kin.

22. “Like Ram’s arrow, I zoom to Lankan shores
and search the realm of Ravana, the demon, sore.”
he yelled, “And find the Ma, you take my word.
If not I split the earth and underworlds.”

23. “If still I fail to know the whereabouts
of Sita Ma, I’ll bring tethered that clout
of demons, like a sacrificial cow
to Ram, the epitome of love; I vow.”

24. “I vow to bring good news to you my friends;
or else, unearth Lanka with that wile fiend;
along with his army of demon boors
and bring to Ram’s presence; you rest assured.”

25. Followed by an army of Sal and other trees
into the air and embellished by leaves and blooms
the potent Hanuman looked handsome like a groom.
“I’m looking like the fastest Garuda”, He thought with glee.

26. For miles the trees followed the Lord of Apes
into the skies and looked like swarms of sparks
of bright glow-worms over a mountain cap
and fell into the seas like shooting stars.

27. Trees sunk, but flowers floated over blues
decking the ocean skin with brilliant hues.
Aha! The deep is looking like the sky
with myriad floral stars, in gentle spry.

28. The mighty Hanuman glimmered in skies
a lightening like, amidst the cloudy mists
as dangled his outstretched shadow in sly
flutters of passionate twiddles and twists.

29. He raised and raised into the skies, splitting the air
with bosom high; with speeding thighs and shoulders wide
billowing gusts; with angry eyes exhaling fire
he zoomed and zoomed stirring the spheres and ocean tides.

30. The stirred up ocean waves had soured in height
and touched his feet, conceding oh, his might
the Sun had chilled upon the Son of Winds;
zephyrs mild had smeared balsams reviving mind.

31. The Devathas, Yekshas and Gandharvas
from their celestial abodes had tossed
hand-fills of lovely Parijathas
and looked at his aweless effort, engrossed.

32. And blessed from skies the sacred Saranas, Siddas and saints
his mighty feat and mulled over his strengths, with interest quaint.

MOUNTAIN MAINAKA

33.

33. “I owe my mite to great Ikshwaku dynasty.
I got the name of ‘Saagara’ because
of Sagara, a king from that line praiseworthy.”
So thought with gratitude the water mass.

34. “And Ram is from Ikshwaku lineage.
It’s time repay I debt and pay homage
to that bloodline. I must assist the Scion
of Winds, who’s flying high on Ram’s mission.”

35. He called the Mountain Mainaka and said
“O’ friend with golden crests; O’ Mountain blessed!
Since long we’ve been companions; know when?
Recall the time you hid in my caverns.”

36. “The Lord Indra was chasing down the Mounts with wings.
You flew and flew and plunged into my water springs.
I prayed for you, you know. He thought a moment long
and said, you should become a wall impregnable
against the vile attacks of underworld’s cabals.
Because of me, escaped you thus, Indra’s honed prongs.
Became we friends since then and getting well along.”

37. “To the Ikshwaku family indebted I’m.
And Ram is an Ikshwaku prince on whose mission
the Son of Winds is going to the demon’s realm.
He needs some food and rest, O’ friend, in this long run.

”38. “To pay me back one favour good, it’s time!
The Son of Winds is flying with the aim
of finding Sita chaste, the wife of Ram.
With hospitality, his brawn, you balm!
With fruits, yummy, and waters sweet and best
you have, delight that great
