Fear

Take a chip off that brick that’s on your shoulder
Throw the clock at the wall,
The crumbling now starts
The camera flashes as it sails by
The hole your empty words left in my heart.
You stand still as stone,
Your words trying to move
I run and push and pull hoping you’ll give
Dragging you further behind me
Into the dark space where we both lived.
There are treadmarks in the parking lot
There are cracks in the walls
There are boxers on the bathroom floor
There are things I’m afraid of in the corners
Sighs from ghosts of domestic war.
I turn here, a photograph left, an extra key-
A loud knock resounds at the door
I can’t see the form through the eyelet
You can’t breathe until I answer it
Neither can believe in what we reentered
Fear too great to surmount anymore.
