Curse Squared

By Susan Evelyn

He is the sweetest lover.
Soft eyes of hazel blue and green,
pert nose and ready smile,
he gently holds my hand.
My sweet, my pet, my love!
He dotes upon me every day.
Greedily his eyes follow every move.
“There goes your puppy dog,” others say.

They call me lucky. Little can they guess
the shadow cast upon our love
and the cyclic sylphic light
that rips our hearts apart.

The moon! What wondrous thing!
Her gibbous gaze shines down until
she turns her eyes full front
to witness many lovers’ trysts.

Turn away!
Turn and turn again
until your face is not so round.
Look not upon the ground.

Mother Ceres! Circe the Wise!
Put aside your spells.
Artemis set down your bow.
Adriadne do not spin your web tonight.

Bind up your silver tresses.
We do not want to be entangled
in those beams of glowing light
that others find so welcome.
Avert your eyes from my lover.
He is mine, not yours, to enthral.
Turn someone else’s dream to nightmare.
Haunt other peoples’ love.

His head rests gently on my breast
lulled by the rhythm of my heart.
But I cannot deny the nagging fear
he could as easily tear my throat apart.
Each cycle takes its toll.
I see it in his clouding eyes.
The same fear plays upon his mind
and robs the lustre from our love.

He loves me, I know without a doubt,
and loves me still despite his form.
But playful nibble becomes fateful bite
when his wits are stolen by the night.

Hear! See! He comes.
Eyes shot through with burning amber,
with matted fur and jagged jaw
and blood dripping from fang and claw.

Will he find me?
Smell the fear on my skin?
Hear the thunder as my heart beats way too fast
where I cower here in fright?
