... Because it is impossible to forget such significant moments in life ...
She breathed in deeply.
The smoke stung her nose.
Choking, she had trouble catching her breath.
She coughed, then smiled.
She opened her eyes.
The smoke burned them.
Shards of glass penetrating their delicate blue.
She quickly looked away stifling a giggle.
She listened.
The fire crackled.
It burned the wood and consumed the surrounding oxygen.
She kept her eyes closed, wanting to relish the sounds.
She reached out her hands.
The heat caressed them gently.
It was still too far away to warm her thoroughly.
Should she move closer?
Yes.
Getting up, she inched closer to the heat.
Giggles erupted as children played nearby.
No television, no phones, no computers.
They chased each other and enjoyed the solitude as much as she did.
Near silence engulfed her once again.
It was just her and the fire.
She knew this couldn’t last forever.
Soon it would all be over.
Opening her eyes, she sighed deeply.
“Can I have a marshmallow, please?”
She smiles widely.
“Might as well roast one more before the campfire burns out.”
