Dance of the Season
Standing in the summer light
In diminutive gowns of green
Covering burgeoning fruits
To be given forth in harvest
Evening shades are cooling now
Ushering in the fall affair
Slowly competition begins
In cascading color changes
Layers of rusts, framing gold
Blushing tender burgundies
Bedecking the flowing gowns
In tinted hues rich and lush
Spring greens and dappled yellow
Cinnamon reds and orange glow
Material weaved in such a fashion
No king could ever afford
Brazenly some show together
Competing shamelessly
And demanding raucously
The attention of their lord
Others demurely take turns
Showcasing their glory
Against the simple greens
Of coquettish sisters
Tall gentlemanly pine
Escort luminous lovelies
Framing their beauty
Against their forest green
Slowly dancing in the wind
Gowns swishing and swaying
A mesmerizing waltz
Of explosive radiance
Losing a little here and there
To expose long graceful fingers
Always reaching to the sky
For an approving touch
Shyly hiding nothing now
Strewn across the ground
Gowns lying at their feet
Stark beauty for all to see
Lovely bare limbs are darkened
From summer’s modesty
Always gazing heavenward
To the one that they adore
Proudly their lord lavishes
His golden rays upon them
He sends the bridal white of winter
To lightly dust their bare forms
Winter gives them well earned rest
From all their summer toils
Slumbering in satin white
In their earthen bower
Sighs of warm breath from spring
Bring back the promise of life
Awakening barren boughs
Weary of winters caress
Graced with delicate blossoms
Fully gowned in maternity green
They wait for fall’s harvest
To join the dance again
