1. When the Darkness Comes

When the darkness comes, there’s no escape.
It swallows you whole,
You try and fight,
But it’s just too much.
Your pain goes unnoticed by everyone around you,
They don’t hear your cries for help; they don’t want to.

When the darkness comes for you, you might surrender.
You’ll embrace the brutal hate around you and succumb to it,
Quietly, slowly, the darkness will surround you,
But now it’s like a protective blanket,
It engulfs you, keeps you warm on the insides and cold on the outside.

When you embrace the darkness, people might notice.
They will see the coldness in your eyes,
But they will torture you anyway.
They are afraid inside, but they won’t show it.
You’re still their victim, in their eyes.
You deserve it, though they don’t know why.

When the darkness starts controlling you, you’ll never notice.
You won’t fight back; the dark will protect you.
When the darkness comes, it will bring dark thoughts.
And one day you’ll stand up to your tormentors.
They’ll see the wild anger in your eyes,
They’ll see the evil and tremble with fear.

When the dark is with you, they have no chance.
You will hear their cries for help and pretend not to notice.
When the darkness comes, revenge is always a dish best served cold.
You smile, but it does not reach your eyes.

The darkness heard your cries for help,
When no one else noticed, and no one else cared.
Now you have the darkness,
And nothing and no one will ever hurt you again.
You’re cold inside, and cold outside,
But it doesn’t matter.
The darkness came.

2. No Evil

No one heard my cry for help,
No one felt my pain,
No one saw the terror in my eyes,
As I hurtled down to Earth,

See no evil,
Speak no evil,
Hear no evil,
Do no evil;
That’s what you lied,

Will I haunt your dreams at night?
Will you hear my cries?
Will you hear my moans and groans
From that night I hurtled down to Earth?

See no evil,
Speak no evil,
Hear no evil,
Do no evil;
That’s what you learned,

I lay against the cold hard earth,
My head felt weird,
I couldn’t move,
And I saw you both approach me.

The two of you,
You looked so tall,
Looming high above me.
You looked at me
And made a face
And turned around
And vomited.

Am I so ugly,
So ugly I made you puke?
All I wanted was to be your friend,
So why did you hate me?
Why did you hate me so much?

See no evil,
Speak no evil,
Hear no evil,
Do no evil;
That’s what you forgot.

You wiped your mouths and looked at me
and smiled, cold and mean.
You reapplied your cherry lip gloss
And whirled around and left me there,
Lying on the ground.
Mindy, you always were so nice,
Cass, you were so funny.
I thought you were my BFFs,
So why did you hate me
-Hate me so much?

Was it because I bought that purse you liked?
Was it because the boy you liked wanted me instead?
Mindy, Cass, I hate to ask,
But was it because you were jealous?

See no evil,
Speak no evil,
Hear no evil,
Do no evil;
That’s what we learned.

Did you forget that?
Did you forget that when you pushed me
Off that bridge?

3. Deaf

Why can’t you hear me?
Have you gone deaf?
Why don’t you see me?
I’m standing right here!

Why are you crying?
Why are you moaning?
Why don’t you hear me
Comforting you?

Mother, I’m hungry!
Can’t we make breakfast?
Where are you going,
Looking that sad?

Why are you wearing
Such a black outfit?
Have you gone deaf?
Hey, why are you sobbing?

Mother, I’m scared –
Why can’t you hear me?
Why can’t you see me?
Why don’t you answer?

Where are you driving?
Whose car is this?
Where is my car?
Why don’t we use it?

Mother, hey look!
There’s people at church,
And it’s not even Sunday!
They’re all wearing black…
Hey, why are we turning?

This is so odd; everyone’s here!
My friends and your friends
And our whole family!

Mom, that’s not nice—
You sat in a pew
That’s already full!
Now where am I
Supposed to sit?

The church is dead silent,
It’s kinda unnerving.
Who is that guy,
Walking up to the front?

“Mary-Ann Lee,”
He is saying right now.
No one is turning
Or looking my way,
Even though he just said
My full name.

Why are you crying?
Why are you sniffing?
Why can’t you hear me
Comforting you?

“Mary-Ann Lee,”
Repeats the guy in the front,
“Mary-Ann Lee; she texted while driving.”

Okay, you’ve caught me,
You’ve caught me!
So I texted while driving –
What’s the big deal?

Why can’t you hear me?
Have you gone deaf?
I’m trying to explain –
Hey why can’t you see me?

Mother, oh mother!
I’m going insane!
Did he just say,
“May her soul rest in peace”?

Why can’t you hear me?
Why can’t you hear me?
Do you not answer…
Because I am dead?

4. If I Want To

Don’t tell me what to do;
I can do what I want.

I’m old enough;
I don’t need you ‘guidance’

And…

I will swallow these pills
If I want to,

I will smoke this cigarette
If I feel like it,

I will get bad grades
If I choose to,

I will defy authority,
If I wish to,

But…

I won’t do no drugs,
I won’t smoke no cigarettes,
I won’t but my skin,
Or get bad grades,
I won’t defy authority…

‘Cause I don’t want to.
