Our Sick Child

Our Sick Child

Feeling inept when a fever struck my sweet child,

My imagination took over and my mind ran wild.

My life so full now and this seemed so strange,

to be without him, everything would change.

I was trying to calm him with a soft song,

But I knew there was something horribly wrong.

His body writhing, so small was flushed and burning,

Grabbing the phone, to the doctor I was turning.

He told me to go and with wings on my feet

To the hospital emergency where we would meet.

Running out to the car I strapped him in,

Unwilling to let go, my head started to spin.

All of this time, unable to get his fever down.

A nightmare scene, he in a hospital gown.

Something threatened to steal our son away.

For me at that moment, I had to stop and pray.

I bombarded the gates of heaven above,

Begging God not to take this child we both loved.

They skirted him away, and in all my twenty-six years

I had never cried so hard, nor shed so many tears.

I was an emotional mess, and my head ached so.

I just couldn’t imagine it was his time to go.

How could all of this have happened so quick

His temperature spiked and he was so sick .

Time just dragged, when a doctor came to explain

“We have diagnosed your son with an inflamed brain.”

These words spoken by someone, uncaring, so sharp,

Pierced and cut me straight through my heart.

Unwilling to accept this, I asked if my doctor was here.

“Your doctor just called; he’s on his way, very near.

Surgery on someone so young…
