Breaking Fear’s Grip
Psalm 27:1 – (KJV) The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
God, I admit that sometimes fear grips me. I pray that you will help me to get rid of this fear. I know that you can break this grip of fear over me. As I read your word, teach me how to confront and conquer this fear. In Jesus’ name I pray.
Amen
Do you believe that God is able?
As Christians, we need to face our fears. To do this, we need to know that God is able. God is able to see us through any trial and tribulation that we face. The Bible tells us in Psalm 23:1 – The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Malachi 3:10 – Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that shall not be room enough to receive it.
Notice in this scripture the windows of heaven need to be opened to pour out a (one) blessing. This blessing we will not have room enough to receive. This scripture alone is enough for us to believe that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we should ask or think!
However, you need to personalize this question. Do you believe that God is able? In scripture – Matthew 14:25 - And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
Why do we give in to fear?
Fear is false evidence appearing real. Fear is the opposite of faith. Thus, perhaps we give into fear because we do not have enough faith. Peter had the faith to ask Jesus to bid him to come unto thee on the water. Therefore, Peter had to know that Jesus could help him to walk on the water. However, when Peter saw that the wind was boisterous – he gave into fear.
Usually, there is some outside factor that causes us to become fearful. For Peter it was the wind blowing noisily caused him to lose faith. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Thus, we need to consult God’s word, placing the word deep inside of us, so that we can access God’s word when we start to doubt.
Faith overcomes fear. Therefore, let’s see what scriptures say about fear:
2 Timothy 1:7 – For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and of love, and of a sound mind.
Isaiah 41:10 – Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
1 John 4:18 – There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
Psalms 34:4 – I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
Philippians 4:6 – Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Romans 8:15 – For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba, Father.
Psalms 111:10 – The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth forever.
Deuteronomy 7:21 – Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the LORD thy God among you, a mighty God and terrible.
Proverbs 14:27 – The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
Joshua 1:9 – Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Let’s take a few minutes and meditate and study on these scriptures. When you study these scriptures and place them deep down in our spirit, we can overcome our fear(s). These scriptures can give us comfort and courage to know that God is still in control. Therefore, we can come boldly before His throne and ask him to help us conquer our fears and give us what we want and need.
Ultimately, it is up to God and the alignment of our lives to HIS Will be done in our lives. God is our Judge. God is our Provider. God is God all by Himself. God has not given us a spirit of fear; but one of courage and strength we just have to trust and believe that HE is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or thing, according to the power that worketh in us (Ephesians 3:20) and break the grip of fear!
