Chapter 1

Confusion. Confusion and loss. They spiral through my mind together, creating the haunting dance that cloud my mind. Why? Was there a reason to take my mother from me? The only family I have? Did fate expect me to go back? Go back, to the life that my mother had left. A life with my father and twin sister. no. I liked my life. The life I have lived till now. Roaring in the distance. I turn my head. Crissy is searching for me but I won't go back. Not till my mind repels the feeling of loss. I lean my head against the bark of the tree. The edges of the dress I wear dangle from my perch on the branch. I close my eyes and I’m lost in sleep soon.
When I open my eyes I am staring into big green eyes. I reel back in surprise and fall from the branch. Landing on my feet I look up. A huge tiger leaps from the branch. She is just beautiful, a lovely white tiger with green eyes and a red-pink nose. She stalks toward me and I back away slowly smiling.
“ Now, Crissy, lets be reasonable. I only disappeared for..” I looked at the sky. It was evening.” Okay, maybe I do deserve this but I WILL fight back!.” I ran. Fast, weaving through the trees to gain a lead if Crissy slowed in confusion. She didn't. She caught me in almost no time she jumping, taking me to the ground with her as she landed. Her rough tongue licked my face as I giggled uncontrollably. She let me sit up and I hugged her. She purred loudly and settled her head on my shoulder. I sighed.
“ I'm sorry Crissy I just needed out of the house. Mom's loss still seems so fresh. Its been 2 weeks and it still goes through my mind. Never leaving even when I'm asleep. Why does it plaque me?” A tear slid down my face as I snuggled into Crissy's warm fur. I jumped to my feet and turned in the direction of the cottage. I nodded to Crissy and we headed home.

We walked through the open door. I looked to the flowers in the middle of the room. Mom's favorite. Wild roses of many colors. She could never pick a color, she loved roses in all colors. I walked to were they were placed and sat in the floor in front of them. The smell of them filled the room, if not the house. No matter how hard it gets the smell of her favorite roses always makes it seem distant. I walked to the bedroom and laid down and stared at the ceiling. Nope, not going to happen tonight either. I rose again and headed for the window. Once safely outside I tip-toed away silently as not to alert Crissy of my plans.
When far enough from the house I ran fast. I stopped soon and walked lazily through the trees. The dirt beneath my feet worn down from the times I have come this same route before. This path was walked many times by both my mother and myself. After walking a little longer the path ended in a secret garden. The flowers, fully bloomed, filled the air with a sweet fragrance that lingered with me no matter where I ventured. I pulled some delicate lilies from there place and walked the way I had come. As I walked I became away that my feet had carried my further from the house and to a small footpath lined by great oak trees. I looked for the perfect one and climbed. Once far enough up from the ground I settled back and brought the lilies to my face. Their scent surrounding me as I drifted to sleep for my first good nights sleep in awhile.

I looked behind me for the 5th time. Nothing. Again I turned back and urged Terith forward. He turned his head and began walking down the path once more. I stared ahead of us and focused on listening for approaching footsteps. Instead I heard breathing. Soft, slow breathing, like sleeping. I looked around and could not find the source of the breathing. Then I pulled Terith to a stop. I looked up and there it was. I blinked. I was not expecting to find a girl out in the middle of nowhere like this. And sleeping in a tree! I laughed silently, but Terith whinnied and shook his head. The girl in the tree shot up into a sitting position. Something white drifted down from where she sat and I zeroed in on it. A bundle of lilies. I returned my eyes to the girl and found her looking the other direction. I smiled slightly. Then she looked in my direction. Before I could say anything something white streaked through my line of sight and crashed into me. I looked up in tine to see huge white tiger advance one step before hearing a light but firm voice.
“ No, Crissy stop.” she said jumping lightly from the branch. Walking toward the tiger she beckoned to it. Without hesittion it turned and padded to her side before sopping to turn to face me again, still on alert. She giggled while looking lovingly down on the great cat. Her long red-gold hair brushed the back of her knees as she turned to look back at me.
" Do you know where I could find the castle?" I am to meet my father and sister there." she said softly. I smiled and nodded.
" You are but just a few miles, would you like an escort? I am on my way there anyway." i leaned forward into a slight bow and grinned misceviously at her. " My lady" i said and she giggled. I grabbed the reins as i turned back toward the path gesturing her to go ahead. She laughed again and walked forward to my side and her Crissy followed her but kept her eyes on me. this was going to be an interesting trip.

She looked back at me, my face reflected with her hair and body. Ember, my twin, had been lost to us for 13 years. when our parents split she went with my mother while i stayed with father. i don't hate my life, i am loved by many people in my kingdom. i am their princess but i also care about them. i'm not like those spoiled brats from fairy tales, i learned sword-fighting, archery, and lauguages for the other race. i knew elvish and fae. not shapeshifter though, to many animal launguages and those sounds came only be made by animals. Ember, being raised by our mother, learned some other things. while my forte was swords and politics, her's was archery and healing.
being part animal as we are we both have an affinity with nature(horses are no problem). one of the reasons Ember went with mother was because she in part tiger, beautiful white tiger, just like mom. i however am part wolf like dad but while dad is a smoky gray, i am also pure white like Ember. and no were-s and shapeshifters are not the same. were-s can only shift into one type of animal while shifters can pick and chose.
