High School Bad Boys

"Congratulations honey!" mom said with false enthusiasm over the phone. And I could tell she was telling me it only half - heartedly. Paper rustling in the background and her high heels were running around all over the place. And I would hear her breath like she was rushing somewhere.

It's been a very long time since we've seen each other and today was the first time we've talked over the phone in 3 years and 1 month. I don't even know if I even miss her.

"Thank you! But you did all of the appling - that was the hard work so thank you!" I said. I wasn't excited because I was talking to her. I was excited because I got into my dream high school - Fortman High School For Excellence. I've been dreaming of going here ever since 7th grade when my teacher was talking about it.

The light cream colored paper was sitting in front of me with the elegant envelope along with it. The scripted handwriting printed my address on it.

"Oh, but you worked hard to get the grades! So, still congratulations to you! I don't even know what to say, honey. I wish I was there with you." mom said. Again, I can tell she doesn't mean it. She's over 100 miles away from here, in fact she isn't even on the same contuinent as me - she is all the way in London, England. In addition, she haven't been part of my life for almost 4 years.

"Yeah." I murmured.

"Oh, I almost forgot. Did you get my mail?"

"Yeah, I did."

"So? . . . ?" She asked.

"Wait, I need to open it. . . I was just so caught up with the acceptance letter that I didn't even look at the other stuff yet." I added quickly so i didn't hurt her feelings.

"It's ok, honey, I know, I know." she said, "Ah ha! Found it!" And I knew she wasn't talking to me. She wasn't even putting her heart into this conversation with her daugther that she almost forgot.

I let out a silence sigh. I opened the package from her and I found a pair of key.

"Mom! You brought me an apartment?!" I asked.

"No, not an apartment, I brought you a house." she said.

"Oh my God, my very first apartment, oh thank you, thank you mom!" I exclaimed excitedly.

"Yeah, I figure tthat the new house is closer to Fortman than the old house." she said. I can hear her lock the door of her house.

"Thank you so much." I said.

"Yeah and don't worry about the old house, the bills of the new house or anything, I got it all under control." she said and I could hear the soft purr of her car engine being turned on.

"Thanks mom, I am so happy that  - " I started, but was cut by her.

"Look honey, The address of the new house is inside the envelope and everything is inside already, like the furnitures, dishes, food in the refrigerator, etc. And if you need an help or anything call me or talk to the neighbor her name is Mrs. White. She is quite a plesant lady . . . -  I actually like her. Candice, I know I just call you 10 minutes ago, but I got to go to work. I can't talk for long. I promise I will call back later, ok?" she said.

I sighed silently to myself again, "Ok, mom."

"I'm really sorry, Candice, please forgive - "

"No, mom, it's ok, I understand you have to work." I said trying to sound happy even though deep down I really want her to talk to me for the whole entire day, "Have a good day mom."

"You have a good day too Candice. I love you." she said.

"I love you too." I said. I'm not even sure if she heard me saying it because she hung up. I missed those times when we used to talk for more than 2 hours. But I feel like everytime I call or she calls, the amount of time gets shorter and shorter until it only lasts 10 minutes. I sighed.

I got up and started packing up my things.

~~~~
 Sitting in new room, I waited for my phone to ring - waiting for mom to call back like she promised.
Have she already forgetten me? I asked myself. But I shook my head. No, that can't be. Mom was the one who got me into Fortman, she obviously knew what I wanted. In addition, I should be thanking her for working so hard to get me into that school - Wait! I didn't even thank her! How rude of me?
I tried calling mom - wanting to thank her, but her phone was shut.
I stared at my phone for God knows how long, until I gave up.
She is probably working or having a really important meeting. I'll called her next time and thank her.
I got ready for bed, but that didn't stop me from thinking about the fact that this is not the first time that she didn't call like she promised.
I shook my head. I really need to get over this because all that matters is that tomorrow is going to be the first day of school.
High School Bad Boys
Walking into Fortman High School For Excellence made me so proud of myself. And in order to keep my pride, I was very careful about everything I do.
Ok, rules : 1) raise hand in every single class 2) take notes on every single detail that the teacher talk about!!! 3) read more than 385 books this year 4) never get an A- or lower 5) do about 200 or more hours of community service 6) and lastly, try to join an extracurricular activity and not be kicked out a few minutes later because I nearly killed everyone in the room. I thought to myself. And if everything is completely, it would be a perfect year!
I followed the sign to the office and waited on line to get my textbooks, schedule, locker number, etc. just like everyone else.
"Next!" the office lady said. Eleanor Sunshine said the golden name tag printed in classy script.
"Hello, Eleanor Sunshine! I'm - "
"Excuse me?"
"Sorry, Mrs. Sunshine, the name - "
"Mrs.?"
"Ohh, look, Ms. Sunshine, I am new here, I don't know anybody's name and I don't even know how the school work - so when I saw you name tag that printed Eleanor Sunshine, I thought I could call you that because in my old school we call the teacher by their first name. I am truly sorry. And also I thought I could call you Mrs. Sunshine - " Instantly I cut my talking because I was about to say something really mean.
Because you look pretty old to not be married. I finished the sentence in my head.
"Enough talking." she said and under her breath she murmured "What a chatterbox." My jaws dropped. I was just about to tell her that I am not a chatterbox, I just need to explain what needs to be explained when someone on the line shouted, "How goddamn long do I have to stand here?"
Rude much?! I thought taking in deep breaths.
"Would you like to tell me your name?" Ms. Sunshine asked sounding annoyed. I could tell she doesn't like me already so I quickly told her my name to get it over with.
"Candice Rebecca Rose."
" ... Here is your schedule, your homeroom is 604. And here are your textbooks ... 3 books for literature, 2 books for math and science, 1 book for history, music, gym, health and sex ed. and here is the school handbook - I highly suggest you to read it - "
"Where's my locker?" I asked Ms. Sunshine.
She gave me look saying 'I was just about to get to that.'
What?! I'm sorry that I have to ask because I have more than 10 big ass textbooks in my hand.
She hesitated before she answer as if she wanted me to suffer just a little more. "Your locker number is 458 and here is your locker combination." She slapped the little peice of paper on top of my enormous pile of textbooks.
"Thanks." I said weakly and slowly walked out of the office.
At least I got everything I needed.
"Ok, now I just need to find my locker. 458. 458. 458 -- woooah!" I cried as I ran into someone.
"Hey! Watch where you - woah! ... Are you ok?"
I immeditatly started picking up my book without looking up at him.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Just fine." I said.
"Look, I'm sorry." he said.
"It's ok, I should be saying sorry." I said and I scrambled to gather all of the books. He bend down to pick up the books and at the corner of my eyes I caught a glance look of his face and I stopped picking up the books.
Holy cow, he is hot. I thought and looked at him again. This time he caught me looking at him and smirked. I blushed.
