"Honey, where are my keys?" Dad yelled from the living room.
"They're in the kitchen!" Mom yells back.
"Thanks babe." He says after he gets them and kisses her. Me and my twin brother, Adam, share an 'eww' face and finish eating our cereal. He has bright red hair and shining green eyes just like me. If I hold my hair back, you'd actually think I was him. Where that
alike.
After my dad walks out the door mom turns around and says, "Okay kids, after you're done-" Whatever she was about to say next was cut off by a yell and one of the windows breaking. A body was flying through it. Dad. Mom rushes to him, but before she can reach him a shot rockets through the house. She falls down in front of dad, never to move again. Just like that.
"Mom! Dad!" Both me and Adam say at the same time. We get up, but what we see next stops us dead in our tracks.
"Well hello! You must be Adrean's children. So nice to finally meet you!" A mafia boss walks through the broken window. He has long dark hair, and icy blue eyes with a scar going right through one of them. A cruel smile was beginning to form at the corners of his lips.
"A-Adam... take Candice and... run... run f-far away... far a-away from... here." Dad said in his last dieing breath, as tears were streaking down his bloody face.
"Don't you dar-
" The mafia boss never got to finish as me and Adam lurched for the stairs. "Don't just stand there, after them!" He said to his thugs. They thundered up after us.
When we reach Adam's room, we close and lock the door and run to the window and yank it open. There's a magnolia tree close enough for us to reach. And right as we're just jumping out of the window, the thugs brake down the door and start shooting. One bullet catches me in the side just as we hit the tree.
Adam looks over and sees me bleeding profusely. "Candice!" He turns to glare furiously at the thugs and sees them take aim. He pushes me out of the tree, causing me to brake my arm and a few ribs. But he saved me. Cause they were about to shoot me in the chest, but Adam pushed me out of the way and caught the bullet instead.
"Adam!" I scream as his body falls out of the tree too and lands on top of me with a crushing thud. I'm sobbing even harder now as I get up and run like the devil into the street. There are two more thugs waiting outside in front of the front door. When they see me, they yell for their boss and begin the chase. I'm ducking and dodging through other peoples yards. They're starting to close in on me. I look and veer to the right and slide into the drainage pipe that leads to the sewer. I hear cursing and shooting. I limp and stumble farther in. Running to where the safety is.
Chapter 2
The sewer is an awful place. There are rats, bugs, even an alligator at one point. I stayed well away from that. And the smell… there is nothing so horrible smelling in all my life then that. Not even Adam’s socks. And that’s saying something.
I sway a little too close to the river of sewage flowing beside me. I haven’t eaten in 2 days. I don’t know where to go. At least I’m going the opposite direction of those monsters. I have no family anymore because of them. I have no cousins or grandparents. No aunts, uncles, nieces, or nephews. I. Am. Alone. My dad taught me a long time ago not to trust the police. I’m taking his advice.
My bullet wound is festering. I think it’s infected. My ribs are throbbing. I think I should get it looked at… But where can I find someone who won’t call the police? Then it comes to me. I have to go to the United States of America. Those mafia guys will find me sooner or later if I stay here. I don’t have any money on me so I’ll have to sneak onto an airplane.
I see a ladder leading up to an exit. I limp toward it and start to climb. I lift the lid and take a look around. I’m in the middle of the street, but I know where the airport is from here. Just as I’m climbing out of the exit, I hear a horn blaring behind me. I whip my head around and see a semi truck barreling toward me. I’m frozen. Just when I’m about to be road kill, something slams into my side knocking me out of the way of the truck. My head cracks against the asphalt, making me see stars. It’s Bliffl. He’s in my math class.
“Are you okay Candice?” His grey eyes look worried.
“Yep, I sure am. Now will you please get off of me?” I groan. He’s on my ribs and that doesn’t feel very good.
“Oh. Sorry…” He trails off when he sees my arm. “Candice! What happened to your side!?” He tries to grab it, but I yank my arm away and get up unsteadily.
“I told you I’m fine! Now, I’m in a hurry so goodbye. I may not be coming back.”
“No, wait!” He starts to follow, but a car zooms past him blocking his path. I stagger away.
People are staring at me. I feel uncomfortable, but I trudge on. I pass different streets, all of them familiar because I’ve gone the airport once in my life. And for good reason too. I have air sickness. And I’m almost at the airport when I see Bliffl and two police officers stalking toward me.
I start to run/stumble away faster. “You know, I appreciate your concern but, GO AWAY!” Yeah… they’re speeding up. I can’t let them catch me, I’m almost there! My eyes scan the area for a way to lose them. There! I dart into a nearby alley. And step on a cat.
“RREEEAAAAWWWW!!!” The cat scurries away all the while glaring at me. The cat’s luckier than I was. I tripped. I think I made record time in getting up. I’m going to make it! A hand takes a firm hold on my shoulder. Crap. I guess I wasn’t fast enough. I look over my shoulder at the officer. He looks mad.
“You are under arrest for the murder of Adrian, Adam and Deborah Dancelle!”
“WHAT!?” Bliffl and I say at the same time.
“I got you because I wanted you to take her to the hospital! She’s hurt! And, she would never do that!” He tries to stop them but they just shrug him off.
“I didn’t do that! It was that mafia guy! Zulu or something! Let me go! I didn’t do it!” I thrash and wiggle, but it’s no use. They’re stronger and they’re not fatigued and injured. Still, I fight all the way to their car, which looks suspiciously like a black SUV. It doesn’t have those police lights on the roof like there supposed to. I’ve got a bad feeling about this… I turn to look at Bliffl, he followed us all the way to the car. “Thanks a lot.” I growl. He looks down shamefully.
“I only wanted to help…” Is the last thing he says before they shove me into the car.
“Hey!” I shout. “That hurts!” The other officer turns to look at me as he sits down beside my seat. I gasp at the pain as my head whips around. My cheek is throbbing. He slapped me!
“How dare you-“ My yell gets cut off as he slaps me 3 more times. I’m getting dizzy.
“Talk again.” He threatens with his hand ready. I don’t say anything but I throw him the most hateful glare I can manage with half of my face swollen. After about 10 seconds of staring at me, he motions the other cop to drive.
These guys are obviously not real cops. I bet they even work for that same guy who killed my family. Think! I have to get away from these guys. I’ll jump out of the door if I have to. I smile. Time to go bratty 19 year old. “Ow! That really hurts! I don’t know how I’ll live any longer!” Then I burst into tears.
And just as I expected, they turn their heads away. They’re trained for hateful words and frantic fighting. But not a crying little brat. Heh, heh… I keep it up till we’re a block from the airport. No use in wasting a good ride. I shift my hips up a little and my good leg lurches out and knocks out the guy sitting next to me. One down, one to go. The other fake cop doesn’t seem to hear anything, so I slowly scoot over to the unconscious one and take his keys. It’s hard, but I manage to unlock my cuffs. I start to sit up. Sadly, the driver sees this and shouts. I swing my cuffs and clip him in the face right across the temple, which makes him slam his head on the steering wheel. Perfect, now all I have to do is… It then occurs to me that the car hasn’t stopped moving. Oh, this is gonna hurt… I open the door and jump. I try to land on a patch of grass past the sidewalk, but I miss it by a few inches. My arm scrapes the concrete leaving a bloody streak. My mouth opens into a silent scream. I lay there panting for a few minutes. A crowd is starting to form, that’s not good. I need to get to the airport before some more goons try to take me again.
I get up on shaky legs. Some guy gets out of the crowd to help me up.
“Are you okay miss?” He asks in newly learned German. I twist my head to tell him that that’s not necessary, but his face stops me. He has dark green eyes and raven black hair. He looks to be about 23. I can’t see most of his tanned body because of the expensive thick coat he’s wearing. He must be American. A rich one by the looks of his coat. They aren’t used to Germany’s cold spells. I almost laugh at this, but I have to move.
“I’m fine thank you.” I say as I try to wiggle out of his firm hold.
“Oh, no you’re not. How about you just come with me, and I’ll take you to the hospital.”
“No.” I’m not having any of that. I step on his foot and
