The dried autumn leaves crunched under my Converse All-Stars as I strode down the sidewalk on my way home from school. I made it to the tree, my usual resting spot. But today there was someone else. A girl. Long blonde hair, neatly tucked behind her ears by a fire-engine red headband. I paused before approaching her. "You're in my spot." She flicked her glowing blue eyes at me, taking the breath right out of my mouth. "We can sit together." She said like a song. I dropped down next to her. We looked at each other and we smiled.
"What's your name?" She asked. "Logan. What's your name?" I asked. "Penny." Our eyes avoided each other. I looked at my shoes. They used to be bright white and were now the color of sand. I opened my lunch box and got my gushers. I ripped the package, stuffing the trash back into my lunch box. I fished out the first jelly morsel with my fingers, a blue one. I was about to pop it in my mouth. "Want one?" I asked, looking into her probing, penetrating eyes. Penny smiled, revealing a matching pair of dimples, and extended her hand.
"You live around here?" I asked, stuffing the gushers wrapper into my bag. Penny nodded. "I live on Holiday St." she replied. My brows rose in surprise. "Me too." Our gazes held for a long moment. I could see tiny freckles under her doe-like eyes. Tiny earrings studded her ear lobes. I swallowed hard. My heart raced in my chest. I looked away in a panic. "Do you want to walk home with me?" I asked. Her sweet smile reflected in my eyes. "Yes." She picked up her messenger bag, and I my back pack. I never walked alone again.
