"....And what's with people these days? They're always complaining about money."
Opening to reveal the warm, honey-brown orbs, 14-year old Alex woke from her partner's internal yapping. And unfortunately for him, she was not in the mood to hear it.
"You know," she began, startling her friend for the moment, "If you do not shut the hell up, I'm going to throw you off this train and laugh while your body becomes splintered from the ground."
He scoffed, "Well look at who's decided to wake up, four hours behind schedule."
Alex rolled her eyes. "Please, you're no eception what-so-ever, Daniel."
"Whatever, you might as well pickup your belongings, 'princess', we get off the train 10 after." Daniel glared at his partner, who in turned flipped him off. "Go die," She scowled.
"Go right ahead, I'm not stopping you."
Silence.
"Jack-ass."
"I love you too."
Alex sighed. This was their daily morning routine, not that she'd complain about it. She actually enjoyed lack of adults controlling her life, even if she had to deal with Daniel, her best and only friend. Both had a cat-dog relationship. Sometimes it was comfortable and pleasant, other times she'd rather be friends with a Tasmanian devil. But they've been stuck together like glue, and they both knew each other better than anyone else. Which reminded her...
"Danny?"
"What?", he looked up from his bag, making sure he wasn't forgetting anything before their departure. Everything in that bag of his was "vital" for their survival, or at least that's what he says.
"Isn't today your birthday?" She asked.
"Yeah, so?"
Furrowing her brows, she retorted,"So, you're turning a year older. Don't you think that calls for a celebration?"
"No. I became a year closer to death."
"Shut up."
"Maybe later. And since did you bother to remember my birthday?" He would give her a sort of look that questioned her opinion of him.
This gaze of course caused her to blush, and she stuttered before looking away, "G-Go die or something."
Daniel chuckled. He loved teasing his friend. It was pretty much his only source of entertainment that he could obtain while cramped in a train storage car. Why were they in a train storage car? Simple-- It was the fastest way to get anywhere. Free, too, as long as you didn't get caught.
"Danny, how much longer 'till we jump?", Alex's voice rang from somewhere in the storage car.
"Uhh," He checked his (stolen) pocket watch. "3 more minutes, why?"
"We have company."
Damn it, he thought. The watchguards of the train. It wasn't uncommon for hitchhikers to jump on and off trains like they did without paying, and where you didn't pay, there was watchguards. Made to annoy the crap out of him. And they were on their way to the car...
"Alex!" He made quick attempt to lower his voice.
"What?"
"Do you still have the firecrackers?"
"Yes, why?"
"They'll do us good, now hand them over--" There was the opening of the car door, and they both went silent and hid. The door would open to reveal a fat guard and a skinny guard. 'Skinny' was tall, like 6'0, and had the redneck beard going on. 'Fatty' was, well, fat, with a pudgy face with beady black buttons for eyes.
'Skinny' was Southern to his heart according to his accent. "We knows you're in here, kiddies," He stalked around around the boxes and bundles of hay in the car, passing Alex's spot at least twice, much to her amusement. As for 'Fatty', he stayed true to his name and lazily stayed by the door, munching on some sort of cake, scratching his butt, and obviously bored of the whole ordeal.
"Gee, Jon, why are we here again?" Fatty yawned, "You psychopathic redneck."
"Dammit Bob, how many-a times do I hafta' tell you?" Skinny barked at his partner. "They sneaky I tell you. Sneaky as mouses."
"And how do you know it was just a rat you saw by the car, or hell, a bird?" Fatty inquired.
"Because no mousy or bird can be human-sized, you flippin' fat polooka!" Skinny threw back, "Again, like I says, they sneaky."
As their quarell took place, Alex could barely stifle her giggles. This was better than the Charley Chapman shorts...
