Death streams through a window as I turn the pages in a photo album from my youth. I can’t fail to notice how green everything was, even a little after that fateful day when broadcasts announced on May 15, 2055, that the environmental degradation of the ozone layer, after decades of decay, had finally reached a critical point. And now all we can do is wait until Earth dies, and the human race with it, an event sure to happen soon, with deaths ranging anywhere from suicides to cancer to burning to death by the sun.
Suicide rates jumped over one hundred percent this year alone. There’s nothing to live for anymore, so why stick around? And everybody’s offing themselves these days, CEO’s to drug addicts and everyone in between.
Burning to death is the worst. The star we used to love to get tanned by is now the ordinance of death that kills everyone who’s out for more than ten minutes. With nothing to protect us from the sun's killer rays of death, blisters and boils develop almost as soon as you step outside, no matter how many layers you put on. And if you manage to get out of the sun soon enough, there’s still cancer.
With so many cancer cases coming into the hospitals, the most they can do for us now is give us an easy out- end it. Chemo therapy is for the rich, and that only prevents the inevitable.
I saw a baby in the maternity ward, just bones, really. That kid will never have the childhood I had, the fond memories. That kid doesn’t even have a future to look forward to. At least I knew life as it used to be, I think, inhaling one last, frail breath.
