The breakers roared and the wind lashed into my face. I put the hood of my sweater on and went on walking along the footpath down to the beach. I had taken three days off to come here. With my hands in the trousers pocket of my old jeans I felt much better than in the strict looking suit I had to wear at work every day. I stretched my arms out and began running. The footpath ended and I could feel the wet sand under my bare feet. I turned around, dancing and singing and staggered into the sea.
The sky was a bright blue that made everybody feel better. Laughing children built sand castles, while their parents took great holiday photos which would be sent to all family and friends later. “Yippee”, shouted Jimmy full of joy before jumping into the biggest wave he had ever seen. Laura, his little sister, was sitting at the bank, a big smile on her face and led the waves stroke her feet. The air was full of giggles and magic. A colourful ribbon of a kite glittered in the sun. I enjoyed eating watermelon. It was my day. It was midsummer.
As long as he was able to think back he had always dreamt of one thing. And now he would have loved to paint a beach and a girl with sunglasses sitting in a beach chair. There would be sea gulls and by snapping his fingers he would jump into the picture and make it all become real. But he could never make it become real. He did not even have a piece of paper. It was midsummer, but it felt like an icy wind was touching his motionless body that would never get a second chance to truly live.
