The tray in his hands shook, not from fear, but from trying to balance it and the book he was reading without spilling onto it. The food was slightly gray in color and lumpy. He thought it was supposed to be mashed potatoes and gravy. As he reached for his drink it something knocked it of his hand and spilled over his shirt. The distant sound of a train passing in the night is swallowed up by the white walls as she steps inside. She hates this place with its scents of cleaning fluid, and death. She hates giving over her purse to the nurse on the other side of the bullet proof glass. What she hates most is the screams she can hear from other inmates as she walks down the halls. A small garden is up ahead and she can see the one she has come for sitting on the bench staring out at nothing. “So how have you been mom?”

“Just grab your name from the pile and head in”
He snorts as he picks up the nametag, surprised that old Mrs. Chantilly doesn’t recognize him. He thought that she’d never forget all the trouble he’d caused, especially after that little flooding incident. But he supposes that’s what time does to people, it makes them forget or if not forget to selectively remember the good and forget the bad. If it hadn’t been for the invitation from the one person he wanted to see, he wouldn’t have come. She’s there in all her glory just as he remembers her being.
