TREES
‘All men will learn, let it be sooner or later, that he is the master of his world.’ As the boy wrote these words out in his notebook he couldn’t quite find himself understanding the meaning to them. As he stared at the clock in front of him for the numerous amount of time spent in class he began to wonder if at any time that he could become the President of the United States if he really wanted to.
After class, the boy began to walk home. After walking on a dirt road for some time he jumped a white picket fence that was twice as tall as him. The boy was only 13 years of age and his home was about 5 miles away from school and he had to walk home.
While walking, he gradually made his way into the forest. There were all sorts of things in the forest like trees, berries, bugs, insects, deer, and lots of jubilant birds. Sometimes the boy wished he could just lie in the slick green moss all day and listen to the birds sing.
“Hello” came a faint whisper of the forest. The boy turned around quickly but found no one there. “What was that then?” the boy said. The boy’s heart suddenly began to pound in his chest willing him to let it out. He turned around and kept walking even though his breathing was starting to come out in ‘huffs and puffs.’ “Hello” the screeching in his ear came again. As the boy tried to drowned out the voice his feet were beginning to ‘crunch’ ‘crunch’ on the ground more and more slowly. He was ready to run if necessary. “Boo” came the voice and as the boy turned his head to find the biggest, thickest, and all around greenest tree he had ever seen in his whole life. It probably stood to about 8 ft. tall. Then he realized that was the only tree waving its branches ever so slightly.
“Hello, and who may you be?” The tree spoke in a most sardonic voice. “I…I…I” was all that came out from the boy’s mouth. The tree waved its branches again and spoke “I am of a very old family of many trees that come from here. Where do you come from?” Was this real the boy thought? Was this really happening? Even with so much uncertainty the boy still managed to say, “I come through here every day. How come I have never met you before?” The tree’s branches whooshed as its laughter rained out “Oh, but I am just a figment of your imagination. I am not real. So let’s be friends and see each every day, okay?” The boy had no friends and was very lonely but did he really want to be friends with a tree?
After an hour or so the boy’s opinions changed of the tree. The boy learned that the tree was very honest, caring, and loved the boy. As the boy walked home he was extremely ecstatic that he had a new found friend and someone to talk to.
The next day, the boy was so excited to go see the tree that he literally jumped out of his eat when the bell finally rang. Everyone laughed at him but of course he didn’t care. He was going to see his new friend and because of that nothing else mattered. Yet, as he jumped over the picket fence once again he found that something was wrong. Still he kept on and as he made his way down the path he noticed that the tree wasn’t there. There wasn’t a tree to be found from anywhere around him. Not anymore.
Have you ever imagined a world of the future where trees are referred to as wasteland? Where climate change would significantly change and many species, including humans may be extinct. Disturbing, yet the reality of it is that unless there is a course of action taken involving deforestation this will be our future.
DEATH OF A TREE
Sun, moon, stars, mother nature,
As swift as a leaf can fall,
As lightning shatters a tree,
Leaving, leaving
Leaving death in it's wake,
wake up, wake up
The billow of the trees cry,
Sorrow, sorrow
No such blissful sorrow as defeat,
As defiant as defeat,
As the reaper of death comes,
Knocking, knocking
On your door. . .
