How My Grandfather Died

By: Max Sledge
As I walked through the two sliding glass doors the cold air ran down my neck first and then traveled to my back covered with beads of sweat. The same women was there every time I came through those doors. She sat at the accordion staring at the keys but never playing. She glanced over at me confused; her face was covered with time. I zoomed past her making a left and then a right I flew into my grandfather’s room. He was asleep again. I roused him with a gentle shake. After regaining his wits he recognized me and gave me a wide smile.
“Hey jump!” he said. As I hugged him he gave me a kiss on the cheek. His lips were crusted over with the mush he had eaten earlier in the day. We began to discuss the weather, sports and his comfort level. Fifteen minutes into the conversation his eyes glazed over and I knew that I had lost him. His lips began to tremble and I knew he was scared.
“Where am I Jump? I’ve got to get out of here! I can’t stay, bring the car around!” He began to scream at the top of his lungs.
“This isn’t real grandpa. Your just dreaming this up, you’re hallucinating.” I responded. My grandfather began to calm down. I told him to shut his eyes and go to sleep and the nightmare would be over. Slowly he leaned back in his bed and his eyes shut. I walked out of his room, took a left then a right. As I passed by the women at the accordion she reached out and grabbed my shirt. As I whipped around her frail hand released. We stared at each other. She looked embarrassed so I comforted her and asked if there was anything that she needed. She whispered that there wasn’t and then turned around to stare at her keys. The two sliding glass doors opened and I walked into the oven.
