Hola! My name is Jose, and I am nine years old. I just moved to Iowa from Mexico with my mama and papa. We are living with my abuelos.

2

I am not looking forward to going to my new escuela because I don't know much English. What if the other kids don't like me? What if I don't know what the professora or the other kids are saying to me? They might laugh at me.

3

Today is the big day, and I am scared and worried.

4

"Hola Jose! Bienvenido a su clase!" said Mrs. Saunders.

"Gracias," I mumble back to her.

"Class, we have a new friend joining us today. his name is Jose, and please help him get adjusted to Lincoln," Mrs. Saunders said to the class. "Jose, sentas en este silla, por favor."

5

Wow, my professora speaks Spanish. She is not very good at it, but at least she is trying to make me feel at welcome.

6

Oye! It's Math time. Now this is something I understand and I remember doing it at my old school in Mexico.

7

Recess time and the kids are playing futbol. I love futbol, but I don't think that they would let me play. I will just sit and watch.

8

After school, Papa meets me.

"Como tu primer dia de escuela, Jose?" asked papa.

"No me gusta mi neuva escuela. No voy a escuela manana," I say. Maybe I will not have to go back since I don't like it.

9

My plan did not work, Papa is making me go back to school.

"Buenos dias, Jose!" said Mrs. Saunders as I sulk into the room.

"Hola," I quietly say in return.

10

The morning flies by and soon it is recess time again. I walk around the playground wishing that I could play futbol with the other kids.

11

Hi! I'm Jeff, would you like to play soccer?" said Jeff, smiling and pointing to the soccer ball in his hand.

Oh my, he is talking to me and he wants me to play.

12

"No," I say, shaking my head.

"Come on," said Jeff

I look at him and he is smiling. I look behind him and see the other kids smiling and waving for me to join them. Should I do it?

13

"Si," I say shyly.

Jeff tosses me the soccer ball and we run to join everyone. I have a great time at recess and am sad when it is over.
