My name is Lucy Johnson. I am an orphan. My parents both died in a plane crash when I was just a baby. George, my dad was an archaeologist, so he had to travel all over the country. This time, he had to go to Alaska. My mom, Mary, didn't want me to come because it might be dangerous. So, they left me with their maid, Katherine.
According to stories I’ve heard from her, the weather was warm and sunny for the first hour, but then the airlines lost all communication with the plane. During the next then minutes, the sky turned overcast and rainy. Afterwards, with no return flight, and no communication with the plane what so ever, they sent out a search party. Most of the bodies were found on an island near Alaska. My parents’ were not.
Now, I’m eight years old, and going to live with my first adopted father’s house. His name is Montgomery Kann.
As I stepped out of the taxi with Katherine, I saw an old, unstable-looking excuse-for-a-house staring back at me. The lawn was dirt, and the only sign of life was the crabgrass sprouting up out of it. The windows were so dirty that I couldn’t see through them at all. Suddenly, the door swung open. A man that couldn’t be older than in his mid-thirties stepped out and said “Welcome to my humble home! What’s mine is yours and all that. Now, when do I get to spend all that money?”
Oh yeah, I forgot. My parents were extremely rich, and left it all to me. The only catch is that I can’t spend a cent of It until I turn eighteen.
“Um, you don’t,” Katherine explained. “Lucy will inherit the money when she comes of age. Mr. Kann looked outraged for a moment, but composed himself very quickly. “Well. Then, welcome, Lucy. You can come in and put your tings in your room, which I will show you to.” With that, he beckoned her inside, and turned go up a wobbly-looking staircase. Uncertainly, I followed.
As soon as they got upstairs, Mr. Kann took a left and shoved me into the room. He got so close to my face that I could smell his fowl breath. “I will get your fortune some day. Even if it’s the last thing I do.” Then he stormed out of the room, and I could hear a key turning in the lock.
