Of Love and Friendship

There was something there between us on that cool, crisp evening. Call it a bursting spark. Call it chemistry colliding. Call it anything, but the magic was there, tangible and palpable as you playfully grabbed my hand and pulled me to you.

What were you thinking as our hearts raced together? What went through your mind as the heat of our bodies gave off sparks as I came into the fold of your strong embrace? Didn’t you know I was fighting hard against my desire to kiss you? My senses were floating away in a sea of bliss. Your gentle touch was melting the ice in my heart. Oh, believe me, you could have had my heart, right then and there as you nuzzled my neck with your rough beard stubble.

All it would have taken was just a little kiss on the curve of my neck. I would have been yours. You could have said “I’d like to go on a date sometime”. But you didn’t. And you gave me every opportunity to kiss you...but I was afraid. I was afraid you’d hate me. That I’d somehow lose you as a friend. Yet there we were...

It was then you made me hold out my hands. I straightened my fingers, but you said “No, that’s not right. Here. Let me show you what I mean...”

Your fingers filled in the spaces between mine. As our fingers entwined, we both sighed. A smile crept on your face. “That’s better. That’s right.”

I think back and I wonder...What would have happened had we followed what we felt? Would we have made it work between us or would we have drowned as the waves crashed down upon us? Above all else, I still wonder, do you regret any of that evening we almost became lovers? Or do you secretly wish like I do for a second chance to make it all right?
