My vision was hazy and unusual colors swirled around my eyes. My surroundings became clear and I found myself walking down a spacious corridor. The building I was in seemed peculiarly similar to a school house. In this dream of mine I could also see myself, as if from a different pair of eyes. My features were not the same. My shoulder length hair was blonde and my eyes were nothing but a dreary gray.
Black silhouettes moved like ghosts past me, staring with their beady eyes. The dazzling lights hanging from the ceiling made the creatures look almost iridescent. I kept walking and walking. The hallway seemed to never end. A black door appeared after a while and I stopped, thinking what could be beyond this exit. But curiosity overpowered me and so I pushed the door open and stepped into an unknown forest. It was… it was stunning.
Tall trees shaded the forest floor from the sun, but the rays that broke through the top formed a speckled pattern upon the ground. Flowers of all colors grew alongside a narrow pathway that led straight through the center of the woodland. I began to walk. I smiled when I saw tiny animals scamper around the trees and birds flying above me, singing their elegant tunes.
Unfortunately, the sun began to fade. The light dimmed and the leaves began to drop from the branches. All the green plant life had died and crippled into tiny black pieces. The animals settled down and everything grew quiet. White flakes fell from above the bare tree tops and pilled one by one upon the empty ground. A bitter chill nicked at my skin and I felt my body becoming weaker. It snowed until the sun had faded completely.
All was dark.
I could hear the faint crack of thunder and lightning flashed in the sky. The brightness made me jump and rain began to fall. The sudden changes in the weather left me baffled. I could not think straight. But as my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I could see that the pathway on which I was walking on was coming to an end. Ahead of me, the forest opened up into a wide meadow.
A figure, a body perhaps, was lying in the heart of the meadow… motionless. Cautiously, I walked to the shape and discovered something unbearable. There, with no pulse, was a young boy. Blood ran from his mouth and nose, like he had been beaten to death. His eyes were open and were the same color as mine… that depressing and haunting gray.
In his hand he held a piece of mirror. Shaking, I took the broken fragment from his hand and held it in front of my face. When I got a good glimpse at myself, I dropped the mirror.
My reflection, just like the boy’s, resembled death.
