My mom told me this story about her friend once. We’ll call her Georgia because I can’t remember her real name. Either that or my mom didn’t tell me. Anyways, my mom knew Georgia since they were young girls. Georgia was one of the prettiest girls around; my mom couldn’t believe she got to be friends with her. I tell her that she’s pretty too to make her feel good but she just tells me, “Not nearly as pretty as Georgia.” My mom always told me the greatest stories about her. Georgia won Homecoming and Prom queen in high school, she had all the boys drooling after her but of course refused to date any of them. She was almost graduated as the valedictorian of her class but got a B in Spanish her senior year. Her life was almost perfect. I always wondered why my mom talked about Georgia all the time and always in the past tense. She never talked about going to lunch with her on Sundays or having play-dates with the kids. One afternoon while my mom was driving me home from school she told me another one of her “Georgia stories” and I decided I’d ask her. I’d ask her where is Georgia. I was pretty hesitant for a while. What if they had a big fight and they’re not friends anymore and she doesn’t want to talk about a situation like that? I figured my mom just wanted to remember the good parts of Georgia but I couldn’t help the curiosity that has been bubbling up inside of me for a while now. I finally came out and asked, “Mom, what happened to Georgia?” She looked at me and then back at the road. “Well honey… right after graduation she started to get into some trouble. Hanging out with the wrong kind of people and she started to drift away from me. I wasn’t sure what to do but I knew something was wrong. She was acting weird and I found out she started using drugs and drinking. It started getting worse and she left me alone completely. A few weeks later her mom called me and told me she was murdered. Probably from those awful people she hung out with.” There were tears forming in her eyes and I started to regret asking. “That was one of the saddest days of my life. I found out my best friend in the whole world was killed and I wasn’t there to help her, I couldn’t do anything for her. She was also pregnant though. The baby survived…” I looked at my mom as she turned away from me. “Mom what happened to the baby?” The wiped away her tears and glanced over at me again. “That baby was the only thing left of my best friend. So I adopted her.”
