“Alrightie Rick.”
He signaled towards the seat beside him. “Come on boy.”
I walked over beside him and sat down.
“So Justin, normally I would never ask someone this about Cassie, but how has she been acting around you? Because lately while she is here all she does is sitting in her room… She used to have depression, and it was really bad, I’m worried that it might be coming back.”
I shook my head and pursed my lips. “Well when she’s around me, we normally lay in the grass together so she’s always smiling, the only time she gets sad when we’re together is whenever she knows that I’m going to be leaving soon, or she has to go home soon.”
“Is that so?” he whispered.
I nodded my head.
“hmm.” He reached beside him for a bottle. “Would you like some Justin? Parental supervision, I won’t tell.” He laughed throwing his hands up in the air innocently.
I shook my head. “Thank you Rick, but I’m going to have to pass, my family has a history of alcoholics, so I do my best to avoid becoming one of them, and that involves avoiding all alcoholic beverages.”
He smiled. “Great response boy, because I don’t want my princess drinking alcohol.”
I laughed. “I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
We sat there in silence for awhile, so I pulled out my phone and glanced at it. “Oh, I’m so sorry Rick but I have to be leaving now.” I shook his hand. “Let me know if you need anything.”
Rick waved goodbye. “Ok Justin, are you coming back for her tomorrow too?”
I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know Rick, Cassie hasn’t hung out with any of her friends lately, and I feel like I am causing destruction in all of her friendships, I think that tomorrow should be a day for her and her friends to get caught up again.”
He nodded his head. “That’s a good idea.”
I turned and walked out the door getting in my car. dark outside cold, looked like there was going to be a bad storm, that meant two days and me and Cassie could say we made it 3 years, with only a minimum number of small arguments that could be counted on my left hand.
I had been driving for awhile, when I got home I pulled my keys out and unlocked my door, stepping inside; I was 17 and living alone, I was emancipated when my mother and i couldn’t get along after my father left us here to rott on earth.
