Chapter One
“Mommy, let go.” Darcia chuckled, as I hustled her playfully up the steps towards her grandmother, Floreen’s front doorstep.
“I just want you to make it up here safe and all, hon.” I whispered sanguinely into my daughter’s right ear. “You know very well how much mommy loves you and will definitely miss you so, while I’m away at work.”
“How long again will it be until the police finally give you a staycation?” She asked, adorably, with a fanged toothed lioness grin.
“That’s vacation, dear.” I chuckled, lightly knocking on Floreen’s door. “And not until next Friday. I promise we will definitely do something special together, when that comes around.”
“Okay, mommy. Love you.”
“I love you too, baby girl.” I answered, giving a loving peck on her cheek, as I steadily turned to leave.
Chapter Two
I made it into the precinct around seven thirty, early that morning. My partner, Heiba Gunderson, was already waiting.
“There she is! The famous Jackie Summerset, finally full and in the flesh.” The asiatic lion cooed, playfully, smacking my paw in dap. “How’s the cub, mama bear?”
“Starting her very first day of kindergarten, down at her grandma’s today.” I replied. “Definitely hella smart as a whip, already.”
“Certainly reminds me of someone I know.” Heiba replied, beggining to munch mightily on the donut in his paw. “I’ll go grab you all the goody goods we got on today’s case reports.”
Chapter Three
I was damn near asleep at my desk, by the time I returned to my office around eight, late that night. My shift had finally come to a full and rather satisfying head. Three patrol runs, six narcotics cases solved, one domestic violence score settled; full and fair, it was just yet another day on the good old grind. I grabbed my handbag and car keys and was just about to shove off for Floreen’s, when my cell phone suddenly began ringing off the hook.
“Jackie! Where the hell have you been? I’ve been trying to call you for the last eighteen minutes, straight!”
“Floreen? What’s wrong? Where’s Darcia? Is she okay?”
“I don’t know! That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to call you about! I can’t find her anywhere!”
