My Sister, My Doctor, Myself

“Dr. Moore, you are needed in Lab 203.” “I’ll be right there,” she answered [replied?].
As Kayla Moore walked down the hall way, she had only one thing on her mind: her sister. Kayla had a secret that if anyone found out she might just die..
“Dr. Moore, Mr.Halt tripped over the test tubes again,” Mrs.Michaels told her with an angry tone. “I am so sorry, I was just walking by and... I guess I just don’t have good coordination” Mr.Halt said apologetically.
“It is all right, Mrs. Michaels, please help him pick the things up. I must be going. Once your done, you may all go home. Read chapters fourteen and fifteen for homework. I will see you all tomorrow.” Kayla then took off her lab coat, replaced it with her winter coat, and walked out into the frosty air.
Kayla Moore is a doctor who teaches part time at a clinic in the mall while she is finishing up as an intern. When Kayla went home, she found that her roommate, Tate, had already made dinner. As they ate, Tate could feel that something was upsetting Kayla. Maybe it was because Kayla was going to turn 29 in two days, Tate thought. But what Tate didn’t know is that Kayla wasn’t the only one with an upcoming birthday.
Kayla was a twin, and she hadn’t seen her sister, Kesha, in seven years. Kesha had a mental illness that caused her to act funny sometimes. It could sometimes get very serious. Sometimes people could take advantage of her, and it wouldn’t end well. The thing that hurt most of all was that Kesha is all Kayla has. When they were eighteen years old, their younger brother, Corey, had been shot. He died in Kayla’s arms, after someone went to get help but didn’t get back in time. She decided then and there to become a doctor and to teach as many people as possible the skills she knew.
“Kay, what’s wrong? You haven’t eaten a single piece of the lasagna. It’s your favorite. Is this about your birthday? You know its okay to get older,” Tate said trying to comfort her.
“What? I am not upset about turning twenty-nine. It’s just, I have been thinking a lot about my Sister. I think she is coming for our birthday, and that just can’t happen.”
“Why not? I have never met your sister..”
“Yeah, you think there is a reason for that. She is just really... not like me. I am tired. I think I am going to go off to bed.” Kayla took her plate, put it in the sink, and slunk off to her room.
She lay in her bed, thinking. “I know she will show up Tomorrow, I just know it.”
When Kayla woke up, she smelled the aroma of fresh chocolate chip pancakes. Her favorite! Tate was in the kitchen flipping pancakes. Kayla sat down and grabbed three pancakes.
“Happy Birthday!!!” Tate yelled, with a huge grin on his face, as he pulled out a small wrapped box.
“Aww... thank you Tate. It is beautiful!!!” As she opened the box, she found a little heart-shaped necklace with little diamonds on each side. Kayla put on the necklace and admired the heart. When they finished their pancakes, Kayla got changed, thanked Tate again, and headed out into the sunlight.

When she got to the clinic, she was punched herself in, and went to her classroom. She had a class to teach before doing rounds. After finishing her class, she did her rounds on the second floor and then went for lunch in the cafeteria with two of the other doctors, James and Tanya. The three of them sat down and discussed different things about their other patients and colleagues.
“Oh, by the way, happy birthday, Kayla,” Tanya said, as she brought her a slice of marble cake. “Thanks, but don’t remind me”, she said taking a bite of cake.
“Why? Be happy this means only one more year of completed of your internship,” Tanya said making faces at the older doctors.
“I just have a feeling my sister is going to show up”, she said pushing around the crumbs of cake on her plate.
“Whats wrong with your sister?” James asked.
“Nothing, it doesn’t matter,” Kayla said, getting up to throw away her stuff.
Kayla and Tanya got into the elevator after saying good-bye to James, since he had one more class to teach. When they reached the floor, Kayla said good-bye and went to do her rounds. After an hour, they met each other at the main desk to discuss some treatment options with a patient, when, she heard it. The sweet sound of horror: “Hi, Sis!”
Kayla slowly turned around to face what she had been dreading for the past two weeks... her sister!
“Hey!” Kesha exclaimed as she came around the desk to give her sister a hug. Feeling awkward, Kayla hugged her sister back. Afraid of what was coming next, she asked her sister why she was here. She answered with a big grin on her face.
“It’s our birthday today, and I want to celebrate it with you. Hey, let’s go get dinner after you get off work,” she says with a gin that Kayla just can’t say no to.
“Alright, I get off work at four and meet you at my apartment. For now, you can hang out with my roommate, Tate.” She walked her to the door and gave her another tentative hug, and Kesha walked out.
“Your sister doesn’t seem that bad. She just seems cheery!” Tanya said with a smile and a questioning look.
“Yeah, but she isn’t your sister. You don’t know what she is like sometimes,” Kayla replied looking a bit upset.
“What do you mean? I mean did you see her smiling face and...”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah! She is wonderful. I just really don’t want to talk about it.” Kayla turned around and went back to the file room to finish the detailed info on her patients.
At four o’clock, she grabbed her coat and grudgingly headed out to her apartment. In the car, she had the idea of running out on the dinner and waiting till her sister had left.
When she walked into her apartment, she heard a girly little laugh accompanied by a hardy laugh. As she walked into the room, she was shocked to see Kesha and Tate laughing, enjoying themselves. In a way, it scared her.
“Hi” Kayla said a little unsure of what was going on.
“Hey Kay! I was just talking to your sister. She is so funny,” Tate said smiling.
“Aww, thanks!” Kesha said gazing at Tate.
“Well..” Kayla said awkwardly “I am ready to head out for dinner.”
“Oh great!, I will just go get my coat.” Kesha said, getting up.
When Kesha was out of the room, Kayla walked over to Tate.
“Tate I am so sorry about her. I told you she was going to come. We should have gone somewhere,” She whispered.
“Are you kidding? I had a great time hanging out with her,” he replied happily.
“Really?” She asked incredulously.
“Yeah, I mean she could be kind of goofy, but in a good way.”
“I am back! Lets go!” Kesha announced as she walked back into the room.
For a few minutes, Kayla just stood there, astounded at what she had heard Tate say about her sister.
“ See you guys later,” Tate said, getting up from his seat and walking into the kitchen. “Hope you guys have fun!”
The girls walked out into the frosty air. It had started snowing, and the flakes were coming down hard. Kayla wrapped her scarf around her neck tighter.

When they arrived at the restaurant, “Carmines”, they sat down at the table near a window on the second floor. When both the girls had taken off their coats, and had ordered what they wanted -- Kesha of course had ordered in an eccentric kind of way-- Kayla asked something that had been puzzling her all day.
“Kesha, what have you been doing with yourself?” she asked.
“Well,.. well, I have been doing a lot. I am working at a designing firm as a secretary helper, and I just moved out of the house,” she answered.
“That is great!” Kayla remarked, “I am so happy for you!”
“I also am going to the doctors regularly now,” she quickly mentioned.
When they were younger, even teenagers, Kesha wouldn’t go to a doctor regularly. They were lucky if they got her to go once every two months. This made it very hard for Kayla. After her brother died it made things ten times worse. He was the only person who really understood what it was like, for Kayla to have Kesha as a sister. When there was no one to really be there for her, it cut her deeply. Their parents, as much as they tried, could not really understand Kesha as well as her siblings, which made it hard for Kesha to get along without ether of them. So once Corey died, Kesha had to college with Kayla. Kayla was devastated! As much as she loved her sister, was looking forward to going into the world by herself, and now that that had to be put off for another few years, until Kayla went to Medical School.

“That is wonderful, absolutely wonderful!” Kayla exclaimed.
They talked for a while, and Kayla thought that maybe the therapy had been working. Sometimes it was as if she was just talking to her sister, nothing more or less. Other times, her sister could get out of hand and would freak out.
When they were ready to leave, Kayla offered for Kesha to stay at her house. Kesha was going to stay at the near-by inn, but Kayla felt that it would be safer if she stayed with her.
Here is the main problem with Kesha. Kesha had had brain damage when she was born. Something had gone wrong during the delivery and brain wasn’t functioning right. She didn’t see the world as other people did. She saw colors for things, and could act really funny sometimes. Sometimes her actions could make her vulnerable. Like the time someone tried to make her doing something awful. And I mean really AWFUL! In fact it is so bad, I don’t think I can write it down. All I can say is that it changed the Moore family forever.
But because of what happened, it impacted Kayla so much, that although
