can do?”
Jason didn’t answer him. Instead he walked towards the edge of the cliff. He picked a large stone up from the ground and looked into the air. He hurled the rock into the air and watched it soar upward. Before it was too far up, Jason held up a hand and caused it to explode in flames. He then jumped from the cliff and took flight for the clouds. The three guys watched in amazement as their friend disappeared into the sky. They all stood watching the point at which Jason had disappeared.
“Where do you think he went?” asked Matt.
“Who knows? He can go anywhere,” Josh chuckled.
The boys hiked through the woods and took their separate ways home. They each wondered the same thing as they walked. If there were two people from other planets already here, were there still more to come? Matt dreamed of there being many people like Jason here to help everyone else. Tony wondered what would happen if Jason didn’t find his uncle’s killer. Josh hoped one day he would be able to help Jason fight. Jason’s closest friends all had his best interests in mind, but they feared that there were others out there that didn’t feel the same way.
Jason flew over the town, just watching it. Everyone was getting home from work or school and getting ready to settle in for the evening. He flew over many houses, making sure to keep his appearance masked in case someone saw him. He eventually came across the house of someone he knew. It was just like any other suburban house in the town. It had white siding and stood about two floors tall. It had multiple windows which were just about all closed. One window in the back was open, however, and leaning out of it, just watching the clouds was Sarah.
He thought about how Friday would go. He could only hope that it would be as incredible as every other time he had been around her. He looked down at her, making sure that she didn’t see him, and noticed that she was frowning. Was there something wrong? He desperately wanted to talk to her. He wanted to give her someone to talk to. But he also didn’t want to seem weird by knowing where she lived. The truth was he had only come across her house by complete accident. Jason decided that best thing to do was to play it cool the next day at school and simply ask how she was.
Jason continued his flight around the town for a little while longer, and soon returned home. He walked into the home and went through his usual routine. He munched on his food, while finishing a simple Spanish assignment. Everything at his school came very easily to him. His biggest learning experience at school was the interaction with other students. Jason began to think of his first days in the school and how different he was from all of the other kids. He talked much more proper than everyone else back then. They had already begun to use English slang and were getting their independent tones. All of them treated him as an outsider, until Matt that is. He was truly Jason’s first friend.
These flashback thoughts made Jason think of his Uncle Alfred. Alfred had always been kind and warm in Jason’s mind. Sometimes the training got a little more intense than Jason would have preferred, but looking back on everything he was glad Alfred had pushed him. Alfred used to write at night. He would say, “Someday, these words I write will be one of your greatest resources.” Jason wasn’t sure what he meant back then. He still wasn’t entirely sure, but it hardly mattered anymore. Alfred and all of his possessions were gone. He was merely a memory now.
Jason leaned back in his chair and looked up at the ceiling. The humans spoke of a heaven and a hell. He hadn’t studied the religious practices of humans very much. From what he had seen and read, all religious beliefs did was bring segregation and war to the planet. Now Jason wondered if his uncle had made it into heaven, if there was a heaven. Jason smiled at the thought of his uncle looking down on him. Something about that thought brought him comfort. Maybe his uncle, mother, and father were all looking down on him. Jason accepted that he could only wait until his life concludes to truly find out. For now, all he can do is believe.
He closed his book and retired to his bedroom. He slept peacefully that night. There were no strange dreams or disturbances; only the peaceful sound of the surrounding woods. All he could think about was Friday and how he couldn’t wait for it to come. The next few days came and went. Things proceeded as normal. The only change was the discussion his friends and him had at lunch. They all wanted to know more about Jason and the Aspen. Jason didn’t mind the attention, but thought that it would be rather difficult to explain while trying to eat a turkey sub. He eventually agreed to answer his friends’ questions soon, just not at that exact moment. Reluctantly, his friends changed the topic to the football and baseball.
After lunch, Jason finished out the day and began his way home. He saw Sarah briefly in the hallway, but they were both in a hurry and could only exchange smiles. Jason and Josh walked out of the school together that day, as Josh tried to convince Jason to try out for the football team. Now that Josh knew about his powers, it was only a matter of time before he tried to get a slight benefit for himself.
“Come on, man!” Josh demanded, “Just go easy on the others. With you, we’ll be unstoppable.”
“Josh, I’ve told you before that I can’t just walk out of nowhere and humiliate you in front of your team.” Jason said with a smirk.
“Oh yeah, ha-ha. Real cool.”
“But honestly, I can’t take the risk.”
“Alright, let me know if you change your mind, then. Catch ya later.”
Josh ran off toward the football locker room to get ready for his practice. His coaches were going to be a little pissed for his absence yesterday. Jason began to cross the street and passed the student parking lot. As he walked by, someone called to him. He turned to see a guy with grease on his hands looking right at him.
“Can you come here for a sec?” the guy asked, “I need your help,”
Jason made his way over the guy’s car and set his bag on the grass. The guy had short and curly brown hair and narrow hazel eyes. He was a little shorter than Jason and looked to be build like a cross country runner more than a football player. He had a sleeveless white shirt and a pair of black sweatpants on. He had black grease all over his face, shirt and hands.
“Hey, can you just sit in the front seat and turn the key when I tell ya?”
“Uhh, yeah I guess.”
Jason opened the car door and sat in the seat. It was an old car, but very nice. It was a green car with a centered black stripe across it. The guy went to the front of the car and opened the hood. Jason sat in the seat for a few minutes as he messed with parts in the engine. Finally, he gave Jason the ‘ok’ and when the key turned, the car rumbled to life. Jason got out of the car and the guy put the hood down. He wiped his hands with a white rag and looked to Jason.
“Thanks, man,” the guy said with his hand outstretched for a handshake.
“Yeah,” Jason said shaking his hand, “no problem,”
“Name’s Kris,”
“Jason,”
“Nice to meet ya, Jason.”
“Likewise, Kris. That’s a pretty nice looking car.”
“Ha, yeah. 1972 Chevelle. It’s been in the family for about as long as I’ve been around.”
“That’s gotta be pretty cool,”
“Ehh, it has its ups and downs. Where’s your ride?”
“Don’t have one.”
“Damn, that sucks. Hey if you ever need a lift, just let me know.”
“Alright, sounds good.”
“We’ll I’d love to stay chat, but I’ve gotta run. See ya around Jason. Thanks again.”
“Yeah, take it easy.”
Kris got into the driver’s seat and closed the door. Jason grabbed his bag and began for his house again. Kris rumbled out of the parking lot and took off down the street. It was fun to meet new people. Kris seemed pretty cool to Jason. Maybe they would hang out sometime down the road. Jason made his way to his house and opened the door to go through the same routine he did every night. He watched the news while he ate that night. Everything he could find on the news either had to do with the alien hero or the alien battle royale. Jason watched TV until his eyes began to ache.
Everything just seemed to go slower than usual for the remainder of the night and the first part of the next day. He found himself looking forward to his date with Sarah more and more every minute. The Friday school days always seemed to drag on. When they were finally dismissed for the weekend, Jason ran to his locker so he could get everything and leave. Inside his locker, he found that someone had slipped him a note. Jason opened it to find that it was from Sarah.
Jason,
We completely forget a time! I hope five works out alright. If not, I can just wait at the park for you. Can’t wait for tonight!
Sarah
Jason folded the note up and put it in his backpack. He hurried home as quickly as he could. When he got home, he suddenly started to feel different than usual. He was suddenly concerned with everything. He couldn’t decide on what to wear. He figured that Sarah would be alright with his typical style of dress. After taking a shower, changing clothes, and grabbing some money, he left for the park. He wanted to try and be there earlier than five if he could. When he arrived, Sarah was sitting on a park bench. He walked up to her and when she turned around, his heart started pounding again. Just the sight of this girl got his heart going.
“Hey!” Sarah greeted.
“Hey, you ready?” Jason asked.
“Sure, where are we going?”
“We could just go to Sampson’s on the square?”
“Yeah,” Sarah said with a smile, “That sounds nice,”
The two walked to the diner on square of their town. On the way there and during dinner, they talked about many different things. Jason told stories about his friends that he looks back on. He spoke of the training that his uncle had taught him. He, of course, had to alter the story to make it sound human. Sarah told Jason about how her parents are always fighting and how she wants to move out. She told him about all the creepy guys that had tried to date her before and how she managed to avoid them.
They talked for hours. Jason was a little disappointed at how fast the time was passing. He wished he could just sit and look into Sarah’s eyes forever. At about nine thirty, which felt too early, they left the diner and began to walk around on the sidewalks of the town. As they walked, Jason noticed that Sarah was cold. He took his sweatshirt off and put it around her shoulders.
“You’re such a great guy, Jason.” Sarah said with a smile.
“You aren’t too bad yourself,” Jason replied with a laugh.
“That’s a cool shirt,” Sarah said, looking at
