you possibly gain?”
“I want Jackson dead just as much as you, boy,” Sollamance declared, “He has tried killing me as well.”
“Perhaps you should be killed,” Jason said, “You are from a blood thirsty, monstrous race,”
“You are a Quixon as well, boy!” spat Sollamance, “Neither of us are doing anything wrong are we? Jackson is the real threat. He wants us gone so that there is no one in his path to glory.”
“What if I can’t do it?” Jason asked, “What if I can’t change?”
“If you believe you can seize the anger inside you and release it all,” Sollamance said, “Then you will.”
Jason thought about it for a moment. Things were finally sinking in. If everything Sollamance was saying was true, then he is part Quixon. His father was a Quixon and his mother was an Aspen. He had always hated the Quixon for everything, but knowing this now changed how he saw everything. If his mother had fallen in love with the Quixon and conceived a child, then maybe there were some good Quixon. Maybe some of the Quixon were trying not to be known as monstrosities.
He still didn’t feel completely comfortable accepting the help of something he grew up hating, but he also knew deep down there was no other way to kill Jackson. Jackson must, at all costs, be stopped. This man was the biggest threat to the planet. As much as he wanted to fight it, Jason knew it was no use. He had to side with Sollamance.
“How?” Jason asked simply.
Sollamance grinned and said, “We will meet back here every night starting tomorrow. I will show you what needs to be done.”
Jason paused and looked down. Was he really going to do this? Was this the answer Jason had been looking for?
“I’ll do it,” Jason said.
“Good,” Sollamance said. He turned and began walking for the edge of the canyon.
“Wait,” Jason said, causing Sollamance to stop short of the cliff and turn around, “How do I know I can trust you?”
“You don’t,” smirked Sollamance. He took one step back and fell into the canyon. Jason ran towards the edge to see where he had fallen. He hadn’t been able to feel a heat signature on him the entire time. When he got to the edge, he wasn’t surprised to find that Sollamance had disappeared. Just like that, his whole world was changed. Nothing was making sense anymore. Could he really trust a Quixon? Was it really worth it just to defeat Jackson? Jason thought of his murdered uncle. The anger and hatred he held towards Jackson rose to his head. There were only three people in the world he could discuss this with. He figured that it would be a bad idea to run it by them.
About four hours later. They all sat in Jason’s house with root beers and potato chips. They were in the living room with the TV on the news. Tony held the remote and had been flipping through the channels. They were always so relaxed and easy going.
“A Quixon? Like the Quixons that killed off your race?” asked Matt, a little surprised.
“Yeah. He had the same red eyes I’ve been seeing in my dreams.”
“Jay, you should have killed that asshole where he stood!” spat Josh.
“He wasn’t trying to harm me. My uncle always spoke of them as evil and menacing, but this guy seemed like he had some good in him.”
“Could it be a trick?” Tony asked.
“Maybe, but it might be my only way to avenge my uncle,” Jason stated.
“Well Jay, we don’t know a whole lot about this alien stuff, but if you think it’s the only way, then maybe you should.” Matt said.
“That’s what I was thinking,” Jason agreed.
“Well what happens then?” Josh asked, “What happens if you ‘unlock’ this Quixon power?”
“That’s why I need your help. If you guys can find any information on Jackson, where he lives, what he does for a living, who he knows, than maybe I can end this once and for all.”
“We can try that but there are no promises on finding anything. My guess is that if this guy doesn’t want to be found, he won’t be.” Tony said.
“That’s fine. Just trying will be helpful.” Jason said.
“So, this Quixon power, what will it do?”
“I don’t know for sure. Sollamance told me that I had to release the anger inside me and that alone would bring forth this power.”
“So all you have to do is get angry?” Matt asked, “That’s it?”
“That’s the main idea.” Jason admitted.
Josh finished his soda and starred at the can. He crushed the can in his hands and looked at it again. Jason turned his attention to the TV. Josh took the crushed can and threw it, hitting Jason right in the side of the head.
“What the hell was that for, Josh?” Jason yelled.
“You said you had to get angry,” Josh said with a grin, “Is it working?”
“You’re a dick.” Jason said, while the other two laughed.
“But seriously, Jay,” Josh said, “What will happen when you succeed? Is it going to…change you?”
“I highly doubt that. Maybe my strength and speed, but I will still be myself.” Jason declared.
“Yeah, we hope.” Matt muttered.
“Guys,” Jason started, “This isn’t going to change who I am.”
“If you say so, Jay,” Josh said, “You got anything else to eat around here?”
“Josh,” Tony began, “Jason is a super strong, alien badass and you still eat more than he does.”
“Yeah, man.” Matt agreed, “All the food is going to your head,”
“Maybe his lady charm will wear off,” chuckled Jason.
“Ha!” Josh laughed, “Like that will ever happen! I think I have four dates to Homecoming right now. I just need to decide which three to let go.”
“Josh…you’re ridiculous,” Jason muttered, shaking his head.
The guys talked about other things in their lives for the rest of the night. As usual, it was mainly girls, sports, and how pointless drama was. Tony and Josh made a game of flipping through the channels and making fun of random actors and actresses. When midnight rolled around, the guys left Jason for the night. They always helped clear Jason’s mind. He knew that if there was anything out there about Jackson, they would find it.
Jason lay awake that night wondering about Sollamance’s offer. The possibility that his father was a Quixon and even he himself was a Quixon made him shudder. Sollamance appeared trustworthy, but Jason still wasn’t sure. His uncle had been so against the Quixon. Was it possible that his uncle was wrong? Or was he about to walk into a trap? Jason fought with himself about whether or not to meet Sollamance tomorrow night. Part of him was afraid that Sollamance would come to him if he didn’t show. He didn’t want a Quixon anywhere near his city. The one thing Jason was certain of was that Jackson had to be stopped. If this was the only way to avenge his uncle and put an end to Jackson, then so be it.
The Becoming
“Again, boy!” Sollamance barked. It had been nearly two weeks since Jason had started training with him. Every night since they had met, Sollamance and Jason had trained in hopes to release the Quixon inside of him. Sometimes on the weekends, they would train in stormy areas during the day. It was all based on Sollamance’s schedule. Jason panted as he looked up at Sollamance. He was hovering slightly above the ground with his red eyes glowing. Sollamance’s training was a lot different than his uncle’s. His uncle focused on control and balance. This training was endless, merciless sparring. Night after night, everything was the same. Jason would deliver attacks, one after another, lucky to land three. Sollamance was strong, fast, and possessed powers Jason did not.
When Jason would throw a punch, Sollamance would counter with four more. He seemed to be good at anticipating his moves as well. Maybe that was a perk for Quixons. Jason’s previous training had been nothing like this. He hadn’t trained with a partner in awhile, and never with one this aggressive. Every time Sollamance attacked, nothing was held back. Jason felt pain every night, but he was able to keep going with his mind on one thing. Jackson. No matter what pain came his way, no matter how many hits he had to take, in the end it will all be worth it.
The hardest part was trying to get angry enough. Sollamance would throw barbs at Jason like the fact that he won’t be able to defeat Jackson like this. He would also taunt him with words such as “weak” and “worthless”. Jason was definitely getting pissed, but nothing seemed to make him angry enough. He hoped that through battle, he would be able to release his power. He was getting better than when he started. At first, he couldn’t even keep his guard up, but now, he was able to be the offensive fighter. The few hits he landed on Sollamance helped Jason redeem his pride. Although, he was getting better, it still was not enough.
Jason lunged at Sollamance. He was a few feet above the ground, with hardly a scratch on him. Jason had to train his eyes for Sollamance. Without a heat signature, it was a lot harder to follow and predict his movements. Jason’s fist clenched and he rocketed it at Sollamance. With a dodge and a counter kick to the side, Sollamance once again came out on top. Jason recovered from the kick and sent one back. As Sollamance went to dodge to the right, Jason spun to give his kick more force and caught him in mid movement. Sollamance’s head jerked to the side and Jason jumped on the opportunity. Jason sent another three punches into Sollamance’s chest, before returning for another kick. Sollamance was ready this time. As the kick came, he grabbed Jason’s leg and sent a downward punch into his chest. Jason slammed into the dirt, unable to break the grip the Quixon had on his leg. Sollamance stepped on Jason’s neck, adding pressure by the second. With both hands on Sollamance’s ankle, Jason sent a flaming charge up his leg. Sollamance jumped away and allowed Jason to get up.
“You’re getting better, but you still aren’t there,” Sollamance declared.
“How long will it take to release this power?” puffed Jason, trying to catch his breath.
“It depends on you, boy!” Sollamance spat, “If you continue to stay ignorant and weak, then it will never be released,”
Jason gritted his teeth and shot from the ground and into the air. His fist extended out, just begging to merely graze Sollamance. When he went to dodge the attack, Jason swung his knee forward and into Sollamance’s chest. With a crash, Sollamance struggled to regain his balance. Unwilling to back down, Jason engulfed his clenched fist in flames and went in for power strike, hoping to damage Sollamance. Only inches away from impact, a sharp pain slashed through Jason’s forearm. Jason planted his feet and shot away from Sollamance. He could now see what had caused blood to pour from his arm. In his opponent’s hand was a black hilted blade. It was a long sword with a blood red stone in the middle of the hilt. The whole sword gave off an evil vibe.
“How the hell is that fair?” Jason cried.
“This isn’t about being fair, kid. In a battle to the death, there are no rules.”
Jason took a deep breath. He was right. When it came down to it, Jason was going to use whatever method it took to beat Jackson. Uncle Alfred had always warned him about letting his darker emotions gain control,
