know me, yet I don’t even know yours,” declared Jason.
“My name?” the man asked, “My name is Jackson. Now, please, stop this fighting. We are not enemies. We are both on the same side.”
“You’re wrong!” Jason spat, “We are on complete opposite sides. You are my enemy!”
“You don’t even know who your enemy is,” the man declared, “We both fight the same enemy,”
Jason had had enough. He needed to get away from him somehow. If he moved, the man would surely cut through him with his blade. Jason desperately needed a distraction. The man stood, blade in hand, with one foot on Jason’s chest. The sleek had once been lightly pressed to Jason’s neck, but now that Jackson had been talking, the blade was only near his neck. He had to act quickly if he wanted this to work.
Jason watched Jackson’s eyes. He had been starring right back at him, but now he looked as though he as distracted thinking of something else. It didn’t matter to Jason what he had to say. Vengeance was everything now. Jason did several things at once. Jason grabbed the foot that was resting on his chest with one hand, while directing his other hand in the direction Jackson’s blade hand. The flaming heat dispensed from his hands, causing Jackson’s to jump away. Still not satisfied, Jason leapt to his feet and rocketed towards Jackson. He continued to produce white hot flames around his fist as he charged his enemy.
Jackson, still surprised that Jason had been so unreasonable, gripped his blade handle tighter. He detected Jason’s attack and was ready to counter. He wasn’t about to be beaten either. As soon as Jason was in striking distance, Jackson swiped his blade at Jason’s neck. He was correct in anticipating a direct attack, but he was wrong to think Jason wasn’t ready for his attack. Jason was now two feet away from his target. He ducked under the swinging blade and sent a scorching punch into Jackson’s ribs.
Crying out in pain, Jackson was shot backward like a bullet. He hit the ground hard, throwing dust and dirt into the air. Jason stood watching the dust. He waited for a heat signature to emerge from the dust. He was going to finish this man, Jackson, off for good. The dust began to clear and what he saw caused his fist to clench. He scanned around Jackson’s presence, but it was no use. He had run.
Jason’s anger was flooding through his body. His hands were shaking. He couldn’t remember feeling this way before. It was as though his hatred was the very blood pumping through his veins. He had been denied his revenge. After all this time searching, he had to start over. The only thing he had learned was his name. Jackson. Jason felt like screaming. Suddenly, he heard a phone ringing. He reached into his pocket and grabbed his phone. He looked at the caller ID to find that it was Tony.
“Hello?” Jason said, answering his phone.
“Dude, where are you?” asked Tony, “You’d think that you would be the last person to be late,”
“Sorry, I ran into a distraction. I’m not gonna be able to meet you guys right now.”
“Was it a good distraction?” asked Tony. Jason could tell he’d said that with an mischievous smile.
“No…it definitely was not a good distraction. Can you three meet me at my place tonight?” Jason asked, “We can have dinner and discuss this whole thing.”
“Uhh,” started Tony, as he asked the others if they could attend, “Yeah, we’ll be there.”
“Alright, cool,” said Jason, “Come by around six thirty.”
“Sounds good, man. See ya later,” finished Tony. The phone went silent. Jason closed his phone and replaced it in his pocket. He hoped that maybe knowing Jackson’s name might help them find him. His friends may be able help him narrow down the people in the city as well. Jason lifted off the ground a few feet, still in disbelief that he had let Jackson escape. After starring a few more seconds at the spot where he’d disappeared, Jason ascended into the clouds.
Jason spun in the clouds, trying to calm himself. The air felt warmer up here. The sun was beating right down on him. It made his body feel good. He noticed that he’d attained a few bruises and his right hand was slightly burned. These wounds were only minor. In an hour or so, they would be nearly gone. He felt a little proud of himself now that the anger was gone. He had managed to react quicker to Jackson’s attacks this time and walked away without a cut from his blade.
Jackson’s blade was something that puzzled him. What kind of blade could be powerful enough to cut through flames? Until today, Jason didn’t believe such a thing existed. It was clear that there were still many things about Jackson that he didn’t know. Jason wanted to know the truth, but he also wanted him dead even more. He truly hated him. Even at the thought of his name, Jason got angry. He wanted to take all of his anger and direct it at Jackson.
Jason landed at his home after about an hour of flying and began to prepare for his friends’ arrival. He placed chairs around the table and began to cook about ten burger patties. By the time the three got there, Jason had a plate of burgers patties, a bag of burger buns, and a twelve pack of soda placed in the middle of his table. His friends came in and instantly smelled the food. The four of them sat down and immediately began to eat. Tony, Josh, and Matt were glad Jason could cook.
“So,” Josh began while stuffing the rest of a burger into his mouth, “Why weren’t you there today?”
“I found him,” Jason said wiping his mouth.
“Who?” Matt asked as he swallowed down the rest of his first soda, “You’re uncle’s killer?”
“Yeah. He said his name was Jackson,” Jason announced.
“Jackson, huh?” Josh said, “Never heard of him,”
“Yeah, me neither,” said Tony.
“Did you get him?” Josh asked.
“No,” said Jason, “I was about to, but he fled,”
“Damn coward!” Matt yelled, “How’d you find him?”
“I ran into him on the street. It was completely random. I was actually on my way to meet you guys and he passed by me. I followed him to his car, and then attacked.” Jason informed.
“Figures,” Josh spat, “He attacks you, you kick each other’s asses, and when you come to finish the job, he runs like a little school girl.”
“Did you learn anything else?” Tony asked.
“No,” said Jason, “Nothing but his name,”
“Damn,” Tony muttered.
“This guy, Jackson,” started Matt, “Do you think he is a Quixon?”
“I, honestly, don’t know.” Jason admitted, “All I know is he is strong, fast, and doesn’t seem to have my best interests in mind,”
The four boys talked for a few hours. They tried coming up with theories about Jackson’s blade and what it was made out of. They also tried out theories about Jackson himself. Matt had brought his laptop for them to surf the internet for clues. It seemed like every trail had gone cold. They found several men with the name Jackson in the city, but none of them had pictures to confirm their identity.
It was a quarter to ten when there was a knock on the door. Everyone looked up from the computer screen. Jason got up from his seat and walked towards the door. He stopped in front of the door and looked back at his friends. Matt closed the computer screen. Jason looked for a heat signature, thinking that maybe Jackson had found his home. When he saw it, he realized it couldn’t be Jackson. The figure was much smaller than him. He could hear a heart beating quickly and finally heard the sound of someone sniffle. Jason opened his door to a crying Sarah Williams.
“J-Jason,” she started, still in tears “Can I come in and talk to you?”
Jason looked into her eyes. It broke his heart to see tears coming from her gorgeous eyes. He looked back to his friends, who immediately stood up.
“We were just leaving,” Tony said.
“Yeah,” agreed Josh, “We’ll see you later Jason,”
Jason’s three friends left as Sarah came in. He walked with her to the couch where they both sat down. Jason could see that she wasn’t harmed, which calmed him slightly, but what had upset her so much that she would come all the way out here. He knew she didn’t have a car to get all the way out here. She must have walked a few miles just to get to his house. She wiped same of the tears from her eyes and turned to Jason.
“What happened, Sarah?” Jason asked.
“M-my parents,” she said, “They got into a fight about me again. This time, they blamed me for their “struggling relationship” and told me that I should leave,”
“They kicked you out, just like that?” asked Jason, surprised that her parents would do something like that.
Sarah nodded and said, “I didn’t know who else to go to.”
“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked, “I would have come and got you.”
“You told me you didn’t have car,” she said.
“I still would have come for you,” he stated.
“I didn’t want you to have to trouble yourself any further with m-,” she started, but Jason interrupted her by grabbing her hand.
“If you ever need help, call me. You will never bother me, Sarah,” Jason claimed. She managed to smile, through the tears.
“Thank you, Jason.” Sarah said as she smiled, “I just don’t have anywhere to go or anyone to turn to,”
“You can stay here for the night,” Jason declared, “At least until you’re parents cool down a bit,”
“Oh, Jason,” Sarah cried, wrapping her arms around him, “Thank you so much. I don’t know what I would do without you. You are so incredible. I just don’t want to be a bother or intrude on anything.”
“There’s no one here but me,” Jason laughed, “You are more than welcome to stay here.”
“Thank you so much, Jason,” said Sarah, still wiping away the tears.
“I’ll always be here,” Jason said, “Whenever you need me.”
Sarah smiled. Her hand was still on his shoulder. Their eyes locked again. Even in sadness, Sarah was still beautiful. He got up from the couch with her and led her into the bedroom. He told her to sleep in the bed and he would take the couch. Sarah wanted to argue, but she knew that Jason wasn’t going to let her sleep on the couch. Jason went out to the couch and sat down. He watched the news, until he could hear that Sarah was sound asleep. He shut the television off and closed his eyes. He tried to dream happy thoughts that night, but again, all he could see was the red eyed figure reaching out at him. He feared the day that he would have to meet the creature in his mind. He hoped that day would never come, but he knew that one day it would.

Quixon

The morning light crept in through the windows. The light hit Jason’s eyelids, waking him from his sleep. He sat up and looked around. The bedroom door was open and the bed was empty. Jason got up from his couch and looked around. He heard water coming from the bathroom shower. He walked into the kitchen and found Sarah’s clothes, draped over the back of a chair.
The bathroom door opened and Jason spun around. Sarah was standing in the doorway wearing nothing but a towel and saw the same surprised look Jason
