that Jason already knew. He talked about the hostages and the armed robbers. He also talked about how the Savior had come in a saved the day. The final thing mentioned was about thr lead robber. What he had said made Jason drop his fork. The interview went over to footage of the man as he was being pulled from the police car. He was yelling at an officer, but not just yelling. He was laughing at the officer. Better yet, he was laughing at Jason.
“You forgot him!” the robber yelled, “You forgot the last of my men, Ha-ha-ha!”
The changed over to the interrogation footage later on that day. It showed the robber sitting at a table with two officers questioning him. They were asking him about the missing man. The story of the ninth robber nearly caused Jason’s heart to stop.
“He…was a sinister man. He made our plans. Drew em’ all up. He was the weirdest fella…but one thing about him stuck out above all.” the robber said.
“And what’s that?” the officer asked, leaning against the wall.
“He had these…eyes. These red and black eyes,” the robber said, “Said it made him part of some other group. Even said he was one of its leaders.”
“What kind of group?” the second officer asked, who was seated across from the robber, “KKK? Nazi revivalists?”
“No,” the robber answered, “he called em’ Quixons.”
Jason fell back. He couldn’t breath. Was it possible? Could that whole thing have been a Quixons doing? Jason thought back to Sollamance. He had spoken of the Quixons now and then in their training. He said they all obeyed one lord and his queen. From there on out, there were six leaders and the rest leveled out from there in a chain of commands. He said all Quixons had a leader, even him. Jason couldn’t help but wonder if that ninth robber was Sollamance’s superior. Either way, it only meant one thing. There were more Quixon’s out there.
Jason walked to his counter and leaned against it. He thought it was over. He thought that Sollamance was the only Quixon that would come here. He thought that any alien threat would die when Sollamance and Jackson did. Now, after he finally was beginning to calm himself…everything starts again. He had a superior Quixon to hunt and find. And in the meantime, it could be killing humans every day. Jason slammed his fist on the counter in rage. He made a few cracks on the counter top, but he heard the sound of something fall come from down below. He walked around the counter and opened the cupboard doors. Inside, lying in the open was a large, tattered book. He looked up to see that it had been bound to the counter by a few ropes.
He retrieved the book and opened the cover. Inside was a folded note addressed to him. He opened it and read it over. It was from Alfred.
Jason,
You will stumble upon this likely after I have passed on. I don’t believe I have a lot of time. They have been hunting me for quite some time. This will help you along the way. This book is my summarized recordings of Aspen powers and how to use and develop them. They are things that you were not ready to learn. Do not rush into any of them, or it could have dire consequences. If you put your time and focus into them, you can master the best of these powers. Even I was not able to master the majority of them. You have the strongest will I have ever seen. You’re power can be unmatchable. You are the shining light in the darkest of times. Keep your light lit.
Forever with you,
Uncle Alfred
Jason read the letter over several times before refolding it. His uncle was always thinking ahead. He knew Jason better than anyone. A tear rolled down Jason’s cheek as he thought about his uncle. His uncle had known that he was going to die the entire time. Jackson hadn’t killed him. His uncle said they were hunting him. Jackson was alone, just like Jason was now. His mind could only think about the Quixons. They must have killed him. Jason knew his uncle didn’t care if he lived or died. He always spoke of how Jason was reason for his life, but he never truly understood. He had served as Jason’s guardian for his whole life all for one purpose. He recognized potential and power in him and he dedicated his life to helping Jason put that power to good use. His dying wish was to help Jason release his full potential as an Aspen and defeat all that threatened his world.
Jason opened the book and flipped through it. It was all notes on hundreds of different powers, techniques, and abilities that the Aspen had and used. He found one called the Soul Blade and began to read:
The Soul Blade is something that exists within every being. All beings have a Soul Blade, but only some can harness the power and unlock it. The ability causes a blade to manifest out of the beings pure soul energy. The blade cannot be broken or destroyed unless the soul, itself, is destroyed…
Jason stopped reading and closed the book. He looked at the cover. It looked like a normal, blue binding journal. He had a feeling that this journal would become his most important possession. With this journal, he can finally evolve his Aspen powers, also helping him resist the urge to use the Quixon darkness. Now all he had to do was read and practice. He was going to become far more powerful than his enemies could have ever imagined.
He stayed up that night reading in his bed. He found a lot of fighting styles and practices as well as sword trainings. He tried to release a Soul Blade, but was unsuccessful every time. He decided it was best if he got stronger first. He was enjoying every single word of the journal. It was as though his uncle were still alive, teaching him something new every second. Jason found a section dedicated to controlling the Aspen flames. He learned how to shroud his fist in flames without burning himself. If he transferred the heat on the inside of his body away from the fist, it would balance and do no damage to him. He wasn’t sure if these laws would apply in every day human experiments, but his body was another story. He wasn’t of this world.
Jason was about to turn in for the night when he read a section called Halyms. As he read, he could feel his hopes lift. This could be a dangerous procedure to try, but could prove to be incredibly helpful. A Halym is non-Aspen being that has been given a shred of Aspen powers in which the being can grow from. The beings would be able to adapt their powers to the point where they can serve as an Aspen’s equal. The process of Halymization changed the Halyms body structure to that of an Aspen’s. They would still be the same species, just with different properties and abilities.
Jason thought of his friends and how they wanted nothing more than to be right there next to him through everything. They wanted to fly and use the flames as well as have the strength and durability that he had. He knew that this was their chance, but he wasn’t sure about the concept yet. It could end badly and have negative effects. It could completely change their lives. They would have to give up a lot to do this, but Jason had a feeling that they didn’t care. He read over how to transfer the power nearly a dozen times until it was burned into his mind. Tomorrow, he would propose the idea to his friends. He already assumed their answer though.
Jason walked into school the next day with a white shirt that had the school logo printed on it. He still didn’t care much for the popular clothing from the big time retailers. He hardly ever wore something besides jeans and tennis shoes. He didn’t buy new shoes very often and when he did, they always seemed to be black or white tennis shoes. He found Josh at his locker as usual. Matt and Tony had lockers on the other side of the school, but Josh was just up the hall. He figured he’d get a good talk in with Jason every morning before class. Usually to boast about something he did.
“Nice job, yesterday,” Josh said casually as Jason walked up.
“Uhh yeah…thanks,” Jason said, hoping nobody listening knew what he meant.
“You don’t seem too enthused,” Josh declared, “something go wrong?”
“Nothing went wrong…I just…had an interesting night.”
“Those are always fun. I had this party one time and there were these two foreign exchange twins and man could they do some twisted stuff!”
“I didn’t mean interesting like that,”
“Yeah, yeah, I know what you meant.”
“Listen, I have something to show you after school. You’ll like it.”
“Did you grab me a cut of the money?” Josh asked jokingly.
Jason shot him a look as Josh grinned. Jason shook his head and laughed. The two agreed to meet at Jason’s house after school with Matt and Tony. He went through his day just as he always did. In his calculus class, the teacher got off topic and began to talk about the bank robbery the afternoon before. Jason pretended to be mystified and clueless to the whole thing, but ended up finding himself asking to leave for the bathroom. He thought it was a little weird to hear a bunch of nerdy math kids talk about their logical explanations for who or what the Savior was.
While he was in the hallway, he ran into Kris. Jason liked Kris. They had become pretty decent friends and always stopped to talk every time they saw one another. Kris always wore a black jacket everywhere he went. He always seemed to be in an easy going mood and wasn’t ever down about anything. It almost felt good just to be around Kris. When he noticed Jason, he made his way over to him and reached down into his pocket.
“Hey, Jason,” Kris said, “Here’s the money for the drinks at the dance. Sorry I couldn’t get it to you sooner.”
“Oh yeah, thanks,” Jason said grabbing the money and holding out the other hand for Kris to shake. Kris backed away though.
“Oh sorry, man. I’ve got a cold. Don’t want you to catch something too,” Kris said.
:”Alright, no problem. Catch ya around?” Jason said.
“Yeah, later bro.” Kris said as he continued down the hallway.
Kris wasn’t exactly the handshake kind of guy. He and Jason had only ever shook hands once, but it didn’t matter all that much. Jason continued to the bathroom where he turned on the sink and washed his face. He splashed his face with water and looked into the mirror. He looked different than he did a few months ago. His muscles were much more toned and his face was much more serious. He still looked the same to most people, but to him, he had lost the innocent look in his eyes. Suddenly, Jason watched as the image of himself grew pale and the hair turned black. The eyes turned into the sinister black and red again. The image began to act as its own figure and spoke.
“You cannot contain it, Jason,” the voice hissed.
Jason closed his eyes and backed away. When he looked back, everything was back to normal. He felt as though he was losing his mind. Was he perhaps going crazy? Or was the Quixon inside just trying to break him? Either way, he had to keep
