its head back. Jason stopped his attack and the flames disappeared, leaving the charred body of the large Quixon.
Jason turned to where the final Quixon had been. He thought he was still inside the crate from a moment, but a noise from the side gave away the attack. Jason slid back to avoid the slash, just barely catching a scratch across the arm. Jason could feel his arm sting, but knew it wasn’t as bad as it felt. He reached out and grabbed the Quixon by the throat. The Quixon struggled to break Jason’s grip, but it was no use. Jason hit him with a few low punches to the ribs then slammed him into the ground. The Quixon gasped out for air, but Jason had his knee in his gut. He was now on top of the fiend, with his hand on his neck and a knee in his gut. He wasn’t going anywhere. Jason punched the Quixon in the face two times and watched him quiver in pain.
“Where’s your boss?” Jason asked in a low, angry voice.
“Ha!” The Quixon coughed, “you think I’d rat him out just like that?”
Jason punched him another two times in the face. More blood came out of the Quixon’s mouth and a bad wound was starting to form. “Where is he?”
“Oh, but don’t you already know?”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Stupid, stupid Aspen.”
Jason put his hand on the Quixon’s forehead and ignited his flames. The flame was small and controlled, but hurt the Quixon immensely. The flames started to burn out the Quixon’s eyes, causing him to cry out in agony. Jason wasn’t too bad at the whole interrogation process.
“You bastard! He’s been right under your damned nose the whole time!”
“Who is he?” Jason yelled angrily.
“Think about it. I know your kind can feel the heat signatures. I’m kind of surprised you didn’t realize he was missing one.”
It all hit Jason at the moment. He knew exactly who the Quixon was talking about. He felt so stupid for not realizing it sooner. He had been right under his nose the whole time. The Quixon superior and he had known each other for some time now. It almost made Jason sick to think about how big of a fool he was. Jason tightened his grip on the Quixon’s neck. He was having difficulty breathing now.
“T-too bad about your girl.” The Quixon laughed.
Jason’s eyes widened. He squeezed the Quixon tight and snapped the life right out of him. The body went limp and his bloody mouth opened wide. He couldn’t breathe either. Those last words were enough to drive him insane. His anger was increasing his heart rate. He had left her there all alone. He wasn’t there to protect her anymore. This whole ambush had been a distraction. The Quixon could have killed him a month ago, but now he was much too strong for even the three of them to handle. None of it mattered to Jason though. He slammed his fist on the ground, causing it to crack. He proceeded to slam his fist against the ground in anger. How couldn’t he have seen it?

Sarah Williams sat at a table in the school’s library hard at work. She had almost finished the last page of her research project. Her pencil lead broke and she furiously tossed it aside. She reached down to binder to grab a new one and saw a pair of legs. An unfamiliar face stood looking back at her. He looked kind, but it was a little strange that he was looming over her.
“Can I help you?” Sarah asked.
“Oh,” the guy said, “yeah, everyone else has gone home for the night and I need someone’s help to jumpstart my car battery. Would you mind giving me a hand?”
Sarah’s car had recently been repaired and she couldn’t deny someone a helping hand. She got up from her seat and pushed her chair in.
“Alright, no problem,” Sarah agreed, “but what’s your name? I don’t think we have met.”
“Of course, where are my manners? My name is Kris,” he said with a small grin.
“Sarah,” she said, “Sarah Williams,”
“It’s very nice to finally meet you, Miss. Williams,”
Sacred Grounds
It was too late. Everything was going so wrong. Jason’s head was spinning and his heart was pounding with rage. He was still knelt down next to the dead Quixon where there was a large dent in the warehouse floor. He had never checked to see if Kris had a heat signature. Ever since he had encountered a Quixon, Kris avoided all contact with him. Every handshake was evaded and he never shared anything about himself. Kris, the good friend that Jason had thought he was, was practically a stranger. His friends knew nothing about Kris. Nobody did. He wasn’t even human. Jason thought back to the moment he met and could now see that there was no heat signature to him. Kris was undeniably a Quixon.
Jason looked up to the ceiling. He knew he had to get back to the school. He shot up with his hands raised. When he got close, Jason used his flames to blow a hole in the roof. He flew out of it spinning. He had never flown so fast in his life. He knew it would only be seconds before he arrived at the school, but he almost didn’t want to know what awaited him at the school. He landed on the ground and broke out into a run. He was bolting for the doors, praying to God that they were open. He pulled on the door and was glad to find them open right up. He made his way through the school until he reached the library. He walked in to find nothing out of the ordinary. There was a librarian typing away at the main desk. For a moment, Jason thought everything was going to be alright. Then he saw Sarah’s purse.
Jason felt his heart drop. He couldn’t even breathe. His head was ringing. The anger inside him was rising fast. He wanted to let the beast come out. He wanted it to help him find the Quixon. It wouldn’t be long now before he just snapped. Jason left the library ready to breakdown. The love of his life had been taken by a sadistic monster. It was his entire fault. He had gotten her into this mess…and now she could be gone forever. Jason dropped to his knees. They were too weak to hold him up anymore. He could feel a tear slide down his check. All hope had been lost.
“Jason!” Matt cried.
“Matt?” Jason asked looking up.
“Jason, the Quixon is here. He has S-,”
“I know…I was ambushed in the city by three of them. I didn’t get back in time to save her,”
“She isn’t gone, Jason! I know where he took her!”
Jason looked up in shock and jumped to his feet, “Where?”
“Follow me,”
The two friends ran down the hall to the back of the school. Matt pushed open the doors and led Jason to the back wall of the sports building. The sports equipment building was in the back of the school and held all of the sporting equipment in the school. On the wall, Jason could see something strange. There was a large red symbol imprinted on the wall. Jason put his hand on it. He wasn’t sure what had put the symbol there, but he could tell it was Quix. He turned to Matt, looking for answers.
“I came back to the school after I went home looking for my chemistry book when I saw a red light shining from the window. I walked outside to see A dark looking man holding Sarah in a headlock. This symbol was opened up wide enough for someone to walk through and that’s exactly what they did. He just walked through. I tried to run after them, but the portal thing closed, just leaving this symbol. Jason…I think it was that Kris guy,”
“It was…he’s been playing me the whole time. He’s the Quixon superior.”
“I knew there was something eerie about him!”
“So…if I can get this portal opened, I can get to Sarah?”
“Make sense to me, but how?”
“Wait here. Don’t leave for any reason at all. If that gate changes at all, you call me. Alright?”
“Yeah, but where are you going?”
“I’m going to get my uncle’s journal. Maybe it can help me find a way to open the gate.”
Jason took off for his home leaving Matt to stand guard. He could only pray that there was something in the journal telling him how to open the gate. He landed hard on the ground outside his house. He opened his door and ran into his room. He found the journal under his pillow where he always kept it. He flipped through it a little, and then left his house. He figured that getting back to the school was the best thing to do right now. At least there he could have the symbol as a visual. He took off, masking his presence and flew off to the school. His insides felt sick. Sarah had been taken God knows where by these monsters…and it was all his fault.
When he returned, Matt was still standing there waiting for him. Jason landed on the blacktop and began flipping through the journal. The sun was still up, but it was covered by cloudy skies. It was as though the sky felt his pain as well. He put his hand on the symbol and then opened the journal. He searched and searched but could not find a single thing about the Quixons. His uncle wouldn’t have ever thought something like this would happen. He never wanted Jason to use his Quixon powers and hoped he never had to fight them. He didn’t know where he could look to find information on the Quixon’s either. Sarah was lost inside that portal and Jason could do nothing about it.
He slammed his fist against the side on the building and looked at the ground. How could he have let this happen? What was going to happen to her? Would they keep her prisoner or just kill her? Jason knew that whatever it was, it wasn’t going to end well. He turned to Matt, who had a look of sympathy in his eyes. Jason looked back at the symbol in defeat.
“Jason…I’m sorry,” Matt said.
“It’s not your fault, Matt,” Jason said in a depressed tone, “You couldn’t have done anything to stop this. Whatever happens to her is on me.”
“Don’t talk like that.”
“But why not? If it weren’t for my emotions getting in the way, none of this would have ever happened.”
“Your emotions made you who you are now. Without them, you and I wouldn’t have become friends. You wouldn’t have had a personality. You and Sarah wouldn’t have fallen in love either.”
“If I hadn’t wanted revenge against Jackson, I wouldn’t have tampered with the Quixon powers. But instead, I ignored my uncle’s words and killed my own brother with an evil blade. He’s dead because…”
Jason stopped in mid-sentence thinking for a moment. He suddenly had an idea. He looked back at the symbol and ran his hand over it again. This symbol had been cut into the wall. In the center of the symbol, he found a red line that was about as thick as his blade. Maybe the power was his key after all. He knew he’d made a promise to himself, but he’d vowed to destroy the Quixon’s first.
“What’s wrong?” Matt asked.
“Step back,” Jason warned, “I don’t want something bad to happen,”
Matt, confused, took a step back. He didn’t know what Jason was
