tied it with a knot. She reminded herself that she must remember to take it back with her.

Paul, Jack and Ashman all dressed in black stood outside the door. “You ok? asked Jack immediately as he was very concerned and really did not want Laura, his daughter to be in such a dangerous position. Laura whispering under her breath replies, “I am ok. Come in. They are all in the sitting room snoring away. Thank goodness. The mogadon worked. Come with me.”
Meanwhile Mei Ling is outside in the driver’s seat and waiting patiently. But she manages to park just outside the house and so follows them into the house as well.

They move swiftly. They tape all of legs and hands of each squatter. Laura and Mei Ling stuff what look like socks into all their mouths and secure them with black sticky tapes. They slip black hoods over their heads. Jack struggles with slinging Mark on his shoulder and carried him to the ford transit and placed him into the back. Paul does the same with the old man while Ashman carries Allen. They do the same with Boxer (taping hands, feet and mouth) and the rest of the moaning group. By now they are stirring and are moaning incoherently through the tapes over their mouths but are too weak, spaced out and drowsy to do anything.

While Mei Ling stays in the car guarding, Jack changes the front lock and the rest of them quickly bag all they can of the squatters belongings into black plastic bags. Once all that is completed they squashed themselves into the van with Mei Ling driving. It is only round the corner passing two remaining terrace houses, a small block of council flats, through the opened gate with the broken lock, and into the driveway to the side entrance of another council flats. This happens to be at the back of the squatters/Mei ling’s house. Ishman had managed to get into the flats earlier pretending to be a plumber, and managed to open the back door and broken the lock.

With very swift movements and trying to keep the noise down they transfer the squatters into the back hallway of the council flats. They also dump their bags of belongings as well. Although they are stirring they are too weak and drowsy to retaliate, observes Laura with much relief.
Jack cut the tapes to their feet and hands and quickly shut the door and ran to join the rest in the van before they drive back to the house. They bag everything else that belongs to the squatters and sling them over the back wall which is by the entrance of where the squatters lay sleeping. They quickly sweep the floorboards of the sitting room and clear it as best as they can so that they can rest there in readiness for the squatters, just in case they have the audacity to come back. Jack, Paul and Ishman stay in the house lying on the armchairs and sofas that they managed to bring from all the various rooms.

Mei Ling and Laura drive back home feeling very apprehensive and still very worried. They are all so grateful that no one was hurt and hopefully that is the last they see of the squatters.

The next day at about 10am Laura and Mei Ling drive back to the house with a basket filled with bottles of milk, tea bags, a jar of coffee and biscuits. The three men have already started clearing the kitchen. All the surfaces are thick with grease and bits of food. The three men rolled the smelly carpet and sling it outside to the front garden. Immediately most of the smell goes with it. Paul washes and mopes the floorboards with thick fairy liquid detergent in very hot water. Jack is washing down all the work tops as best as he can. Ishman clears out the cupboards. The side store room is “chockablock” with junks of clothes, luggages, books, cds, etc. Mei Ling takes off her jacket and immediately starts putting small stuff into black bags. An hour later they have cleared at least 7 bags and the room is still a quarter full. The small 3 by 2 metre front garden is piled high with all the junks that are being thrown out. It smells of mice and there are certainly mice droppings underneath all these mess. They transfer the rubbish to the van and drive to dispose of it to the rubbish dump in Leyton, 20 minutes drive. It takes them 4 trips to clear the whole house. By the end of the day the bad smell has already gone only because they scrub every corner and every surface in sight with the strongest bleach.

The next few weeks with intensive work and everybody working until dawn, see the place becoming more habitable with clean carpets laid, cookers washed through, and walls washed and repainted with neutral colours. All wooden panels, including the doors are sanded down and repainted.

Jake trims the outside hedge and tries to dig up the root. The hedges itself takes two trips to the tip in the van. The back garden is also cleared and swept.

A month later the house is in perfect condition again. The squatters never came back and neighbours stopped to congratulate them for getting the house back.

An estate agent sends a few groups of young people to view for renting. A group of young professional snap it up and they are still there, not giving any problems and paying regularly.

Mei Ling is forever indebted to Laura’s brave and clever moves. Without that she would still be outside the house begging the squatters to move out. She is also indebted to Ishman, Paul and Jack’s support in getting everything according to plan.

Seven months of stress of not knowing how to pay the bills!!! Seven months of living in hell not sleeping, not eating, not able to do much apart from wondering when and how to get her own house back. She would not wish it on anyone. If it happens again, god forbid, she will not hesitate to get rid of them quicker if it ever happened again. She would not depend on the police or the law. Never, who says you should not take the law into your own hands?

As for the squatters, they hit the headlines of the local newspaper. They were all taken to the police station and charged with breaking an entry.
