about my emotions and that annoyed me a little bit. I thought I had mastered my poker face over the years, not showing my emotions. But he proved me wrong again. When class was over I wished I could be invisible so then he won’t be able to follow. This time I tried to get everything slowly, so he would get tired of waiting. To my utter dismay, he was still there when I was done.
“You don’t get the message right?” I asked him before adding “Because I don’t know how to make clear that I don’t want you near me”
“Ouch, that hurt” he said dramatically putting a hand over his heart.
All I did was shook my head and continue walking, only to be jerked back by my elbow. I would’ve fallen if he didn’t have hold of my elbow. I glared at him but he was looking at me with a serious expression.
“What?” I asked.
“You know, the more you resist the more I’ll chase you” then, he let go of me and walked away.
I was stunned, but still made my way to my car and to the hospital. I had about an hour until job started. As usual he was asleep, and I took my time to collect myself before waking him up.
“Hello sweetheart” he said smiling and I smiled as well.
“Hey there Nonno, ready to continue with the story?” I asked and he nodded.
I took a seat in the hard wood chair and opened the book in chapter 2.
“Chapter 2: Struggles
The next few days I kept to myself. I only came down to eat and tried in vane to keep William out of my thoughts. Today was the engagement party. It is something I don’t feel like to celebrate but nevertheless I had to. My mother chose the clothes for me, I was to wear a floor-length gown. The upper body was a corset, strapless. It started as a light pink and by the end of the dress it was almost a fuchsia color. At the waist it flowed in waves until it touched the floor. My hair was arranged in a complicated bun with curls at either side of my face. It was said I looked beautiful, but to me that wasn’t true. I didn’t feel beautiful, I felt like a hole. My eyes were dull and my lips were pressed in a tight line. I was interrupted when my maid came inside and announced it was time for me to come down.
While descending the stairs I held my head up high and made little waves with a tiny smile. It was the most I could manage. I shouldn’t be egoistic, this was for my kingdom’s sake, also called realm. That’s right, there were five realms. I was heir to the most powerful, The Harmony Realm or Kingdom. It was called that way because there was a mix of all creatures living in peace. Then there was The Monster Realm, where it was held all the evil. The Earth Realm, Ethan was the prince from this one and it was home for all the earth creatures that didn’t live here. The Water Realm, it was the kingdom of all that needed water to leave, such as nymphs, fish, mermaids, and etcetera. And last, was The Air Realm, here lived dragons, birds, unicorns and anything that can fly.
At the bottom of the stairs was Ethan waiting for me, for courtesy I took his arm and we walked together. As tradition we had to waltz to the first song. We both bowed and started dancing. Ethan’s hand was way to low for my liking and he held me too tight to him. I looked right and left and made sure no one was watching before I stomped hard with my heels in his foot and move his hand up. He winced and glared at me.
“Ooops, I’m sorry” I smirked, what made him madder.
We continued dancing, with little altercates like that. Until was time to change partners, and the music was happier. I enjoyed myself while dancing with other people. But there was a time I was too tired to dance and took a break by sitting down. As a Princess my duty was to talk as much people I can and be of their like. After I greeted and talked to at least forty people I went to the garden and sat in a bench near a tree. I felt someone sit beside me. I looked to my side and saw Ethan. I gave an exasperated sigh and looked at the other side. Suddenly I felt his arms around my waist and lifting me up to me in his lap. I gasped and looked at him horrified. I tried getting out of his grip but he was too strong.
“What are you doing? This isn’t proper!” I hissed at him.
“I’m your fiancé and I can do whatever I want with you. Proper? And you think it proper to see that poor idiot” he replied back and my eyes went wide.
“I have the right over my body and I don’t know what you’re talking about” I said looking away.
“Do not lie to me! I saw you, don’t you know I spy on you?” he hissed, venom dripping from his voice.
“You shouldn’t do that!” I whispered-yelled, my eyes bright with fury.
“You are mine, accept it” he said emphasizing every word separately before pushing me from his lap and getting up.
I knew he was smirking. He enjoyed my pain, and even though I wanted to change what is happening I couldn’t. I don’t consider it fair! Why must others make decisions for me? I’m big enough to know was right for me. And Ethan wasn’t right for me at all. I swallowed the lump in my throat and resisted the urge to cry. I got up with what dignity I had left and made my way inside.
The rest of the party was torture, but I did my best to hide it, at least until I was safe in my room. What he had said was stuck in my mind. I didn’t have the right to fall in love and marry my loved one, not only that but to even make friends with the opposite sex. I was being spied! I had no privacy, at least not outside my bedroom. I paced my room trying to think for a solution but found none. I was exhausted so I locked my door and window. Also I let the curtains fall, so anyone could see inside my room. I checked every corner to see if there was anyone, but found none. When I was sure no one was watching me I went inside my bed.
Only then I let the tears fall. I don’t know how long I cried, but when I had finally stopped I was decided to make something about my lack of freedom. I don’t mind the consequences, but if I was careful enough no one would find about what I was going to do. Not even that jerk of Ethan.”
I closed the book because it was time for me to go. I looked up from the cover of the book and saw my grandpa was still awake, something unusual. I must’ve shown question in my eyes because he proceeded to say something that didn’t make my day any better.
“He came to visit me you know?” I looked away towards the window clenching my teeth.
“No, I didn’t know” I said and got up before I did something I would then regret. “Nonno, I must go to work. I’ll drop by later to finish the second chapter, ok?” he nodded and I gave a small smile and kissed his forehead before leaving.
My pace was fast and uneven. I felt like punching something or rather someone, normally I’m a non-violent person but when it came to him I just couldn’t help it. I got in my car taking deep breaths and headed over to the mall. While walking to get to the store I watched the people. In the food court was a teenage couple all over each other, I wonder if they have self-respect for one another. I tore my eyes form them and they landed on a family walking together, I couldn’t help but smile at their cuteness.
However I didn’t watch where I was going and crashed into someone. I fell in a sitting position and looked up, only to see a little boy crying over his ice-cream on the floor. I looked down and sure enough my shirt was smeared with it. I sighed and got up, extending my hand and helping the little boy. I smiled apologetically and said:
“I’m sorry, I didn’t see where I was going, are you ok?” he nodded but kept crying, I looked around and didn’t see his parents. “Where are your parents, sweetie?”
“I won’t kwow they left me” he said between sobs.
“Come on” I said sighing and taking his little hands in mine.
I would be late for work, but this was more important. I arrived at the information center and asked they person behind the desk if they could call for his parents, he nodded and I asked the boy for his name.
“Deweeek” he cooed.
“And your last name?”
“I won’t kwow”
We waited for about ten minutes and what looked like a sixteen year old girl came to us.
“Is he yours?” I asked her with disbelieving eyes.
“Yes, but I don’t want that thing. You can have it for all I care” with that said she turned around and left.
I felt a tug at my jean and looked down to the little boy who was looking at me with confused eyes and I felt my throat close up. He just got abandoned by her mother and he was too innocent to even register that. I tried running up to her but she was too far. What was I supposed to do? I looked back at him and then my watch and saw I was really late.
“Why did mommy left?” he had stopped crying but his eyes were red and puffy.
“Well, do you want an ice cream?” I asked instead and his eyes lit up while he nodded his head up and down several times. I cracked a smile and bought him a chocolate chip ice cream and went with him to work.
When I was inside the store I told him to stay put and went to get my uniform on. Thankfully the manager had left half an hour before and hadn’t come back. Elizabeth was a little mad because she had to handle the store by herself for half an hour, but she understood. When I was sure Derek wasn’t listening I looked towards her and muttered:
“What am I going to do with him Liz?” my eyes were desperate and pleading.
“You could take him to an adoption center” she said with a thoughtful expression.
I looked at him again, playing with a guitar and shook my head. I was already attached to him and in those adoptions center the kids always suffer. Besides he reminded me so much of him. Just thinking about it made my eyes sting and my throat close up. I knew what I was going to do, but I don’t know if I can handle it.
When work was over the three of us went to the hospital and towards my grandfather room. My hand was on the handle,
“You don’t get the message right?” I asked him before adding “Because I don’t know how to make clear that I don’t want you near me”
“Ouch, that hurt” he said dramatically putting a hand over his heart.
