rang four times then a distracted voice answered. “Hello?” “Grandpa,” I said. I suddenly had all his attention. “Nessie! How are you honey?” I smiled. “I’m great Grandpa, thanks, how about you?” “I’m making it through the days,” he teased. “So do you have plans tomorrow?” I asked. “Um maybe fishing but I’m not sure, why?” “Well I was just wondering if I could come down and visit you, I haven’t seen you in so long.” “Of course you can honey! You know that! Grandpa’s house is always opened to you!” He sounded so happy I could feel it radiate though the phone. I smiled and said “Okay I’ll be at your house say around ten thirty?” He laughed and said “The sooner the better.” I laughed and said “I’ll go fishing with you.” I actually enjoyed fishing and I loved fishing with Grandpa because he was funny to watch. He was elated. “Wow, who would expect that my granddaughter would love fishing when her Mother never could stand on flat ground without falling?” I laughed. “Okay grandpa, I can hear the game so I’m gonna let you go watch it okay?” “Sure thing honey,” “See you tomorrow Grandpa.” “See you soon honey,” and the phone disconnected. I sighed. I would miss everyone when I left to go to college, especially Jake. Speaking of Jake, I was on my way on calling him.

I turned to Mom and said “Did you hear Grandpa Charlie cracking jokes about you?” Mom chuckled and said “I sure did.” I smiled and said “Well Mom I’m gonna go call Jake okay?” She nodded and walked off to find Dad. I walked up the stairs and to my room. I sat on the rocking chair and called him. No one answered so I was going to leave a message. Beep. “Hey Jake, It’s me Renesmee. Well I just called to say I missed you and that I had a great day today. Call me back whenever okay? Love you, muah,” and hung up. I charged my phone on my dresser; didn’t want Jake to call and not have batteries. After that I went and got ready for bed. I took my shower and got into my pajamas which were a tank-top and cotton shorts. I pulled my bronze hair into a messy ponytail and turned on my laptop. I checked my mail from Grandma Renee. She wanted me to visit before I left for College and she kept asking if Jake and I were getting serious, if we had moved from the friend stage to boyfriend girlfriend stage. I smiled. I really did miss her. I typed back telling her I promised to visit before I left and that yes me and Jake were serious, we had moved beyond boyfriend and girlfriend, we loved each other. I thought about that part; should I take it out or leave it? I shrugged and thought “Hell she probably already knows.” Then I checked my Face book and MySpace. Of course I had new messages asking me to the Homecoming dance which was next week, I left those alone. Suddenly I was exhausted, my eyes drooped and I yawned widely. I got up and went down stairs and saw everyone doing something different. Mom and Dad talking holding hands on the love seat, Grandpa Carlisle and Grandma Esme talking, hands linked, heads bent toward one another and backs facing us, staring out the back door, Uncle Jasper and Uncle Emmett playing chess with Aunt Alice mouthing the moves Uncle Emmett would be making to Uncle Jasper and Aunt Rosalie smiling at Uncle Emmett not even noticing Aunt Alice, probably thinking about that bouquet of roses Uncle Emmett sent her today. “Night everybody,” I said. Everyone looked up. Mom and Dad got up and were at my side. Mom hugged me and kissed my cheek. “Goodnight Nessie, don’t over sleep, you have Charlie all excited now about tomorrow,” Mom teased. I smiled and said “Mom do you really doubt me that much?” She chuckled. Dad grabbed me next and hugged me tightly and kissed my forehead. “Goodnight love.” “Night Dad,” then everyone whispered goodnights and I finally went upstairs. I went to my bed and collapsed into bed, waiting for sleep to evade me, and just as my eyes closed and sleep crept toward me, my phone went off. “Ugh,” I muttered. My eyelids fluttered open unwillingly and I turned over and forced myself to walk to the dresser and pick the phone up. I looked at the number and answered. “Hello?” I said in a sleepy voice. “Uh sorry Renesmee, did I wake you?” Embry asked. I shook my head and said “Nah. What’s up?” “Well I just wanted to call you and say thanks again. You really helped.” I laughed “No problem Embry.” Then he said “Okay wait! Jeez!” My eyebrows mashed down. I didn’t say anything. “Embry were you talking to me?” I asked. “No, no, I was talking to Jake. He’s getting really impatient so here you go and again, thanks.” I laughed. “Okay bye Embry.” I heard the phone moving then a “ouch”. “Hello?” Jake said breathless. I smiled. “Hey Jake.” He sighed hearing my voice. “So what did you do all day Nessie?” “Um not much just hung out with your Dad all day. What about you?” “You hung out with my Dad?” he asked surprised. “Yeah, we had a great time.” “Cool.” “Jake what would you say if I told you that I’m going to take care of your Dad from now on?” He was thoughtful. “Hmm…I would say that’s cool. That means you would come over more.” I smiled. “Do you like me coming over more?” “Nope, I love it. That means we get more time together.” I could hear him smiling through the phone.” “Yeah, and that means I get too kiss you longer,” I said. He laughed and said “As long as you can without breathing.” I laughed then sighed and said, no nearly groaned, “Jake when are you coming home? I miss you like crazy!” He laughed and said “I’m sorry Nessie, I don’t know. We’ll be back soon, and trust me I miss you more than you know.” I smiled hearing his answer. “Okay Jake but let me know okay?” He sighed, clearly frustrated “Renesmee I told you I would tell you as soon as I knew. Didn’t I?” I sighed and said “Yes, but I just wanted to make sure…again,” and laughed. He laughed too then he said “So uh…I hear that its homecoming this Friday.” “Um…yeah it is. Why?” He cleared his throat and said “Well…uh…I was just wondering if you were going with someone.” I smiled and said “Actually I am.” He didn’t answer for a few seconds and said “Oh…well…who is he?” He sounded so murderously angry. I smiled and said “Well you don’t know him but he’s so amazing.” He took a deep breath and said “Oh…well…have fun?” It was half-hearted. I laughed. “What’s so funny?” he asked totally bummed. “Jake, I’m kidding!” I laughed. I heard him join in and finally when I could manage to turn the laughs into giggles I said “Jake, I’m really not going with anyone. You are so over reactive.” I laughed again. He laughed too. “Well then would you like an escort?” He asked. My heart fluttered. “It depends on who were talking about.” “Hmm…well how about the best of the best?” I smiled. “Tell me about him.” “Well he’s the biggest jerk, totally taller than you and darker and he turns into a wolf and oh he loves you. How does that sound?” I laughed. “Hmm…well tell him I’m flattered but I’m going with someone who is a total sweet heart, is taller and darker than me, turns into a wolf, is my best friend and I love him.” He laughed and said “Well then I’m totally screwed.” We laughed so hard. “So is that a yes Renesmee?” I smiled, he sounded so formal. “Yes Jacob that was a Yes.” He laughed. “Miss you,” He said. “Miss you more,” I said back. He laughed and said “You’re tired, I can hear it.” I shook my head “No I’m not.” He sighed and said “Nessie the phone well be here all day, I’ll call you tomorrow, promise.” I nodded and sighed and said “Fine.” He laughed at my glum voice and said “Love you Renesmee.” “Love you Jake.” “Night Nessie” Sigh. “Night Jake,” then the line disconnected. I put the phone back on the dresser and turned to go to my bed. I laid there and couldn’t find sleep. My mind was wondering about what I was going to wear to the homecoming dance. I kept turning. Ugh! I couldn’t sleep! I had to get up and talk to Aunt Alice. I got up and went down stairs. Things had changed. Mom and Dad were no longer here, probably out by the cottage. Grandpa Carlisle and Grandma Esme were in the office; Aunt Rosalie and Uncle Emmett were nowhere in sight and Aunt Alice sat on the couch with Uncle Jasper. Aunt Alice’s smile was so excited and smug, Uncle Jaspers smile was expectant. Of course Aunt Alice would see this. Before I could talk Aunt Alice said “Honey well talk about it later. I see that if we discuss it now you’ll over sleep.” She smiled at me. I grimaced. I want to talk about it now! But I thought about Charlie and how excited he was of hearing me coming over, I didn’t want to disappoint him. Sigh. Fine. My eyelids drooped and I nodded my head and shuffled my way to bed. I collapsed in my bed, asleep before my head hit the pillow.

Chapter Seven: Healthy Competition.

I dreamed I was on a plane flying somewhere. I finally got off the plane. My family surrounded me at once. Mom looked worried, Dad looked very upset, Aunt Alice looked pissed off, and Uncle Jasper looked pissed off too, Aunt Rosalie’s beautiful face looked so scary, she looked like she was going to rip someone’s head off, Uncle Emmet wore no smile today, Grandma Esme hugged me close and cried in her vampire body, Grandpa Carlisle hugged my shoulders and looked so sad. Why did everyone look like this? I really didn’t know. My chest felt empty, and I couldn’t really breathe. All I knew was that I had a since of loss? I was suddenly aware of someone shaking me. I sat upright and gasped. Sweat matted my hair to my forehead. I looked around and saw that I was still in my room. I felt a wintry hand wipe my forehead. I turned and saw Aunt Rosalie eyeing me. “What’s wrong honey?” Aunt Rosalie asked. I shook my head and gasped again. She eyed me, looking worried. “Are you sure?” she asked me skeptically. I nodded fast and tried to calm myself down. “Can I have a minute please?” I asked; my voice broke. She nodded and said “Breakfast is down stairs honey,” and turned and left, closing the door. I pulled my legs toward me and rocked. My hands were shaking and my chest hurt. “Get over it,” I thought to myself. It was a dream, nothing more, nothing less. But I couldn’t shake it off. Something about this dream made me uneasy…I just couldn’t let it go. I kept thinking about the meaning behind it, the hidden message, but nothing came. Finally I decided I had to move, Grandpa Charlie was waiting for me. I got up with shaky legs and walked to the bathroom. Once in the shower I felt so much better. I finally got a grip on myself and decided that I would not think of it today. I expected today to go by slowly, seeing as I had a bad morning but instead the day sped by so quickly. It seemed like I was just getting
