Chapter One: Beginnings Are Always Normal.

Its five past six. Almost time. I got up and went to the bathroom to wash up. I brushed my teeth twice, just in case I had left over lunch on my breath, brushed my hair, and wandered off to my enormous closet Aunt Alice made Dad and Mom put in. Hmm I thought. What should I wear? And then a scent caught my attention. Silk. I turned and searched for the scent. There, by the dark chocolate brown drawer, was a dark blue silk sun dress. It was beautiful no doubt but it looked too dressy. It made me flush just thinking of Aunt Alice seeing why I would need it. But it was awfully hot today...I shrugged, why not? After I got dressed I went down the stairs to sit in the pale on pale colored living room and looked out the long wide glass windows and waited for his scent. Uncle Emmett teases me about the "wolf smell" but I don't even notice. My mind is always somewhere else when Iā€™m with Jac-
"Renesmee," Dad said from the other room. "Could you please think of something else?ā€ I flushed and thought "Get out of my head then" as loud as possible. I didn't like it when he was in my headā€¦but he couldnā€™t really help it. Sigh. "Sorry Dad." I thought. "I shouldnā€™t have been so rude. Iā€™m not mad at you.ā€ I heard him set his book down and heard his steps as he walked to sit next to me. "Whatā€™s bothering you Nessie?" Dad asked. I didnā€™t know what to say because the fact was, everything was wrong! Jake was always gone most of the days and when we were together it was for only a little while. And to top that off when we were together he was half asleep! He was like a zombie. ā€œDadā€ I thought ā€œIs there something going on with Jake that I donā€™t know about?ā€ I felt him hesitate. I turned to glare at him through squinted eyes. ā€œDadā€ I repeated threw my teeth ā€œIs there?ā€ He stared at me for a second and then sighed, seeming to have made a decision. I hoped he made the right one otherwise there would be a fit. He sighed once again and began slowly. ā€œNessieā€¦.I know your worried, but Jacob asked me precisely not to mention anything to you. He didnā€™t want you to worry love.ā€ Before my eyes smothered; now they blazed. He didnā€™t want me to know!?! And my Dad was listening to him?ā€œWhat is it that heā€™s hiding from me?ā€ He looked at me with guilt filled eyes. I knew then that I was not going to get an answer.

ā€œFineā€ I thought. ā€œIā€™ll ask Mom,ā€ I said, turning and dashing to the library before Dad could grab me. Mom was sitting there studying as usual. I expected to just walk in but of course I shouldā€™ve known better, of course Dad would be there blocking me. He looked at me with disapproving eyes. ā€œNessie, thereā€™s no need to be hasty,ā€ Dad said. ā€œDad,ā€ I moaned. ā€œPlease?ā€ He stared at me with pained eyes; he didnā€™t like denying me things. But before he could answer, Mom said ā€œWhatā€™s wrong Renesmee?ā€ eyeing me with worry. Dad looked at Mom and said ā€œBella love, shouldnā€™t we respect Jacobs wishes? Were you not the one to suggest it?ā€ I turned to glare at my Mom. She was my Mom and she had not said a word to me. She looked at me with shamed eyes, like a child getting caught up in a lie. She sighed and then gave Dad a very meaningful look. He smiled and nodded. Ugh I knew Mom and Dad were having a private ā€œconversationā€, because Dad could hear Mom now. Then he sighed and disappeared. I looked at Mom and she looked amused. Was my irritation so humorous? Before I could get even more irritated, Mom said ā€œRenesmee why donā€™t you come here and talk to me.ā€ I strode into the room but paused to close the door, and then went to sit next to Mom. When I sat down she hugged me close and kissed my forehead. Then she sighed. ā€œRenesmee I know you must be frustrated, but you have to learn some patience. Things arenā€™t always going to go your way you know?ā€ I looked at her and said ā€œYes I know that but itā€™s so frustrating! Being the only who doesnā€™t know!ā€ Mom grimaced and laughed a soft laugh. ā€œHoney, I understand more than you know.ā€ I sighed. Mom had gotten into the habit of trying to distract me like Dad usually did. ā€œMom, could you please stop trying to distract me?ā€ She grimaced again, knowing Iā€™d caught herā€¦again. Dad always said she was a bad liar. She sighed and said ā€œWhat do you want to know?ā€ I thought about that for a few seconds and asked ā€œWhat did Dad mean by you being the one to suggest it?ā€ I moved from under her arm to look at her so she couldnā€™t lie to me. She looked at me and said ā€œWell Renesmeeā€¦.Iā€™m the one who suggested that Jacob agree with me to keep it away from you as long as possible.ā€ She stared at me, watching my reaction. My mouth was pulled into a hard line. My eyes were getting much too blurry with angry tears; I inherited that from my Mom, crying when you were furious, great. I thought of getting up and jumping out of the open window and running to the river but before I could do that Mom grabbed me and held my face in her cool hands and stared me right in the eyes and said ā€œWe didnā€™t do it to hurt you Nessie. We did it because we know you worry so much about Jake and we didnā€™t want it to affect you. Now please calm down before I have to call Jasper in here.ā€ I just looked at her. How did she see that in Jake? He and I were best friends but stillā€¦sometimes it seemed like I couldnā€™t see through himā€¦but Mom could. She always did. ā€œMomā€ I said slowly, ā€œHow do you know Jake so well?ā€ She looked uncomfortable and shifted her weight to her left, which leaned away from me. ā€œWellā€¦erā€¦umā€¦ā€ she was struggling for wordsā€¦what did that mean? ā€œMomā€ I said truly anxious now. ā€œErā€¦when the day comesā€¦Iā€™ll tell you.ā€ I didnā€™t know if I could trust her but before I could say anything I smelt the scent I had been waiting for all day. I hopped up, forgetting my anger for a bit and ran to the door. Before I could step out Dad was there. In my rush to get to the door I slammed into him. We both hit the floor with a loud BAM. I struggled to get out from under when I found myself flying up. I was already on my feet. Dad looked at me and said ā€œRenesmee I talked to Jacob an-ā€œ before he could finish his sentence I said ā€œWell I hope you told him how much trouble heā€™s in becau-ā€œ This time he interrupted me saying ā€œLove go easy on him. He didnā€™t want to cause you any stress. ā€œBefore I could say a word Mom was there backing Dad up. ā€œRenesmee dear, you need to understand that Jake is doing his best to make you happy. Now stop being so stubborn and go before he passes out again.ā€ Ugh she was so right! I was wasting my precious time here arguing like a teenager! I took a deep breath and blew it out noisily. ā€œFine,ā€ I grumped. I turned to walk down to the front door hearing his heart beat. Already, Dad was on the couch reading a book. ā€œNot too late love. You still have school tomorrow.ā€ I turned to glower at him. Why would you say that when Jake was right here? ā€œHe has good hearing you know,ā€ I thought loudly at Dad. He smiled widely and then turned to look at me. He stared at me and said ā€œLove you look so much like your mother, so beautiful,ā€ and smiled warmly at me. I couldnā€™t help smiling back. I ran next to him, kissed him on the cheek and hollered ā€œBye Mom. See you in a few.ā€ I dashed to the front door and of course there Jacob was. His dark skin always so beautiful, his dark kind eyes always so welcoming, his lips always so- ā€œHey,ā€ he said. ā€œHi,ā€ I said back. We stared at each other for a minute then I realized I was supposed to be mad at him and that he had some explaining to do so I narrowed my eyes and said ā€œWell shall we? You have quite a bit to explain donā€™t you?ā€ Jacob grimaced and laughed a nervous laugh and said ā€œYeah I do.ā€ Then a look crossed his face. Was it worry or pain? That made me anxious. I heard a gag sound from upstairs and immediately knew it was Aunt Rosalie. Jake whispered "Ooh scary psycho Barbie," and chuckled when he heard her hiss. ā€œBe niceā€ I muttered. They knew how I hated them fighting like that. I could also hear Aunt Alice and Grandma Esme chatting excitedly about how adorable this dress was on me. Ugh. Ready to escape and hear Jakes voice again I took his always warm hand in mine and we were off. We ran until we were on the trail. The smell of earth and grass surrounded us. I turned to see Jake running into the brush so he could phase. It was cool now. Nothing ever felt cold to me. I waited until I saw my favorite wolf come out of the brush with his clothes in his mouth. He dropped it on the floor and I picked it up. This was a usual thing. I grabbed the clothes in one hand and grabbed a hand full of red brown fur and we disappeared into the forest of greens.

He ran with me on his back. The speed was so fresh and strong, it gave me a high. We didnā€™t speak but it wasnā€™t awkward or too quite, I almost forgot that I was supposed to be furious with him; Almost. My hand was on the side of his face so he knew that. He barked out a low laugh in his wolf form. We were in La Push now. He was jogging very slowly still keeping to the forest; no one knew that the legends were actually true except the ones who turned into wolves themselves. I could smell the wolf scent everywhere, it was strong but I didnā€™t think they smelled. Once again Jacob laughed his laugh as he heard my thoughts. That brought back my irritation. He was in my head too. I couldnā€™t have privacy here and I couldnā€™t have privacy at my own house! It was so annoying! Then I felt his head dip lower which left my hand on his shoulder. Great, he had heard that. I quickly put my hand on his head and thought ā€œIā€™m sorry Jake. I didnā€™t mean to be mean. Iā€™m sorry. Donā€™t be upset okay?ā€ He didnā€™t respond. I had ruined the day before it even began. I was such a terrible person. I took my hand away, so he wouldnā€™t hear what I said. ā€œJake you can take me home. I know I was being mean and it wasnā€™t fair. You donā€™t have to deal with me,ā€ I whispered in a low voice so my voice wouldnā€™t crack and so he couldnā€™t hear the pain in my voice. But of course he
