“Mom.” The thought of her has me closing my eyes. I miss her every day. She would have loved Wyatt. I can hear her now giving him a hard time about working so much. But I also know he would have charmed her to no end.
Sometimes I think she sent him to me. She always worried about me being alone. I smile, thinking about her bringing Wyatt into my life before pulling the pillow down more because it smells like him. It’s gotten easier to think about my mom lately. The pain isn’t as bad as it once was.
I jerk awake, almost falling off the sofa, forgetting where I am for a moment. I blink my eyes allowing them to adjust to the room. I lean over and flick on the lamp that’s sitting on the side table. A knock sounds at the door. I’m guessing that’s what woke me up to begin with. I get up as quick as I can and head to see who’s knocking so late.
I check the peephole, seeing a dark-haired woman with her hair pulled tight. I have to say this is a first. I’ve never been at Wyatt’s and had a woman show up. Unless you count food delivery. What I do know is I don’t really care for the way it makes me feel. I pull open the door.
“Hi,” the woman says. “I’m Trisha.”
“I’m Lucy, Wyatt’s fiancée.” It pops right out of my mouth. Jealousy is a terrible thing really.
“Then you’re who I’m looking for. I’m Dr. Trisha North. He said he told you I was going to come by to draw your blood. It’s a requisite here for a marriage license.”
“Right.” I can tell she’s wearing scrubs under her long jacket.
“Sorry. I went straight from the hospital to Wyatt’s office and then here.”
“Please come in.” I step aside, opening the door for her. “Can I get you something to drink?” I have a feeling Wyatt talked this doctor into rushing around to get this done for him.
“Nope. This should be quick. Can I set up here?” she asks.
“Perfect.” I grab my phone, texting Wyatt.
Me: There is a doctor here.
Wyatt: Good.
I stare at the text. That’s it? Good? Then my phone dings again.
Wyatt: Miss you.
I find myself smiling. No. You’re mad at him, I remind myself.
“All ready.” I walk over, sitting down so she can get this done. I’m sure she has a life and didn't plan to be working after hours.
“I’m sorry if he made you run over here.”
“Don’t be sorry.” She wraps the tourniquet around my arm. “Wyatt might be a lawyer, but he’s done a lot of good over at the hospital for us. I’m happy I can help.” She smirks. “I kinda wanted to see who the lucky girl was that snagged him.” I feel myself flush, not sure what to say to that.
Women are always falling all over him. Not that he notices for the most part. Unless they land right on him, and then he gets annoyed.
“All done.” She pulls the tourniquet free from my arm and puts a Band-Aid on me. I didn't even feel her prick me.
“Thanks again.” I see her out, locking the door behind her. My stomach growls, reminding me that I haven't eaten.
Me: Dinner?
Wyatt: Working late. I’ll bring something home around 8
Me: Okay.
I hate to eat alone. I snag a banana off the counter to hold me over until Wyatt gets home. Before I can take a bite, my phone rings in my hand. My stomach flutters at the thought of it being Wyatt saying he’s blowing off work to come home at a normal time to have dinner with me. I look at the phone and see my boss's name. It was a stupid fantasy. The reality is Wyatt will be married to his job. I know that.
“Hey, Meredith,” I answer, trying to sound chipper.
“Lucy. I need you to check over the final seating chart against the updated list Mrs. Manor sent over and move things to fit.”
“Sure, I can do that.” It’s not my event, but easy enough. She could have texted or emailed me that.
“Thanks. I’m having dinner with Wyatt Donovan tonight so who knows when I’ll be home. Laters.” She laughs while hanging up the phone.
Working late? Is that what they’re calling it these days? I grab my purse. I don’t have anywhere to go, but I could go out too. Let’s see what he thinks when I come strolling in late.
Chapter Eleven Wyatt
“Let me get this straight. You are offering a floor of your building at a twenty percent market discount and you’ll pay for all my moving expenses?”
“Yup.” I hold the snifter of brandy to my nose, not because I’m interested in the drink but because Meredith has put on so much perfume, it might actually be toxic.
“What’s the catch?”
“No catch. I want to expand my portfolio and think it would be good if there’s a diverse set of clients in the building.” Plus, I want to be closer to Lucy, but Meredith can be sort of a bitch to her. I don’t fully understand their working relationship because I’ve offered to help Lucy find a different job a number of times, but she’s refused. She’s damned good at her job, so I let it rest. I hate my job at times, too, like when I have to deal with Uncle Cristoff and the board, but I’m not quitting because there are a few grains of sand in the bottom of my work shoes. I figure that it’s the same for Lucy. She’s got stuff she hates, but most of the time she’s happy. Still, there’s a voice inside that says Meredith should not know the reason why I’m moving her whole office in. She’ll figure it out
