Horna hissed, “Have you decided, my king?”
“Not yet,” I grimaced.
Scepter would be happy to grab Horna and these Shock Knights and lead them to the nearest empty recovery room for some glorious off-the-record indiscretions. It would be a group effort, of course. Ahem. But I’d made a commitment to Oia, and I was old enough to know that any commitment, whether it was to a woman or a job or a code of ethics required sacrifice. By definition, sacrifice was not about self-gratification. But I didn’t have to like it and grumbled audibly.
“Is something wrong, my king?” asked Horna.
“No,” I lied with another grumble. “Food.”
“Food is wrong, my king?”
“No,” I snorted. “I’m starving. Can you ask Sergeant Imi and her kitchen staff to bring me a big breakfast?” If I couldn’t satisfy Scepter’s endless appetites, I would satisfy Stomach’s. He’d never break any promise to anyone ever.
“Yes, my king. Right away. Should I push your meetings back an hour?”
“Make it four. I need a nap. I can barely concentrate. My head is hammering from last night.” And Scepter wanted to hammer Horna and those Shock Knights one after the other. Scepter was also hammering me for not tearing off Horna’s uniform to dive into those exquisite breasts. “I’ll be in one of these recovery rooms.”
“Yes, my king. I’ll order your breakfast immediately.”
“Thanks.”
I wandered down the corridor until I found an empty room and went inside. The Shock Knights followed, but remained hovering just outside the open hexagonal hatch. I plopped down on the recovery bed and kicked my feet up, leaning back and clasping my hands behind my head.
“Crown to Control,” I said.
“Control to Crown. Ursa here.”
“Hey, Ursa,” I smiled at the sound of her voice emanating from the comm ring on my uniform collar. “How you doing?”
“Tired.”
“You and me both,” I laughed. “When’s your shift over?”
“Is that an invitation, my king?” she giggled invitingly.
“I wish it was. I’m about to crash myself.”
“Crash?”
“Into bed.”
“Need someone to break your fall?” she teased.
“Talk to me in a few days,” I grinned. “Please,” I added with a shameless Rodney Dangerfield chuckle.
“How many is a few, my king?” Ursa said flirtatiously. “Two or three?”
I snickered at that. “I haven’t figured it out yet.”
“Don’t wait too long, my king. Everyone is dying to know who your first will be.”
“So I’ve heard,” I snorted, thinking how I was dying to meet Ursa. If she looked anything like her voice — of course she did, this was Zalaxia — she would look like Ursula Andress as the character Honey Rider in James Bond’s Dr. No. I was thinking of that scene when Honey saunters out of the ocean surf and onto the beach wearing the infamous white bikini that first put thigh gap on the map. Even better, Honey’s got a diving knife strapped to her hip. How badass was that? If Ursa looked anything like Honey Rider… the “few days” I had told Ursa to wait would shorten to a few minutes after I had sex with Oia. Whenever that might be in the far-flung future. Trying not to grumble too irritably, I said, “Hey, Ursa, I hate to change the subject, but can you put Colonel Sadys on? I have to ask her something.”
“I’ll page her. Hold on.”
After a short pause, Colonel Sadys’ sleepy bedroom voice said seductively, “I knew you couldn’t resist.”
“Resist what?”
“Making me your first. It seems like the moment I laid down in bed and shut my eyes to dream about you, my king, you called to wake me up first thing.”
“Hardly. Keep it up and you’ll be last,” I snarled, annoyed by the sound of her voice and her incessant manipulations. “I need to contact the head of Zalaxian military.”
“You mean Zalaxian High Command?”
“If that’s the top brass, yeah.”
“Whatever for?”
I ignored her question and said, “How do I talk to them directly?”
“At your coronation in the Royal Palace, I would imagine. They will all be there. You can talk to them face to face then. I imagine you’ll want to bed them?”
“No,” I snorted, picturing an oak-paneled US State Department room full of aging, gray-haired 5-star generals from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Bunch of crusty old dudes with paunches, silver crewcuts, and an explosion of medals and ribbons pinned to their dress uniforms.
“Are you sure, my king? It is customary to make the High Commanders part of your first ten.”
“My first ten?”
“Yes.”
“Am I correct in assuming these women— wait. They’re women, right?”
“Yes, my king. Why wouldn’t they be?”
“Just checking. Are they as young and beautiful as any other woman on Zalaxia?”
“More beautiful, my king.”
“More beautiful than you?”
Sadys chortled, “I wouldn’t go that far, my king.”
“But they’re hot, as in beautiful?”
“Very.”
“Right.” Did I picture myself having an orgy with a bunch of half-naked babes in decorated general’s uniforms with the jackets hanging open over their award-winning breasts? Definitely. Did I picture myself getting head — and more — from the sexy heads of Zalaxian High Command, them fighting over who got to finish me off while I reclined in some executive leather chair in that stately state room? Absolutely. And you can bet I would indulge in that fantastic reality nine days from now. After I had sex with Oia. And Venus, and Ursa, and whoever the hell else Scepter wanted here at this outpost. All 1,500 of them, probably. At the same time, definitely.
In nine days.
If that dragon god didn’t kill me first.
I sighed in frustration. Promises, promises.
Sadys said, “What is it, my king? Is there anything I can do to soothe your—”
“Put me through to Zalaxian High Command!” I barked.
“Yes, my king! Right away, my king!”
To everyone’s surprise, Sadys couldn’t get through to Zalaxian High Command. Seemed to me she didn’t have as much pull as she wanted everyone to believe. I wasn’t surprised but I wasn’t willing to sit on hold waiting for them to get back to me. Ursa explained they
