The image included in the DEM entry for the helmet looked badass as hell but I chose not to buy it as it was. I needed to be protected at all times and walking around with a bone helmet on my head would attract unwanted attention, not to mention how uncomfortable it would be.
Instead, I planned to change its appearance into something more mundane, like a hairband or a leather bracelet. This way, I'd still get the Physical Defense bonus, but wouldn't look like a crazy person for walking around wearing it.
The hydrophobic boots gave the best defense boost of any D-grade boots available in the DEM and their additional bonus, while not something that would prove useful in a battle, would definitely come in handy in real life. After all, no one likes the feeling of wet toes in wet socks, especially during the winter.
Happy with my selection, I changed the filters again and looked at swords calibrated for dual wielding.
"I'm done," Louie said and put his tablet aside. "I think I'll join Rory for a bit."
"You mean join him in snoring?" I said, only now realizing how loud he was.
"I never snore," Louie said and stretched his short legs. "Ommanth and I are documenting his snoring patterns when I press different parts of his body."
"It's quite fascinating, really," the dragon said from the orb that was next to Rory.
"Viki, shouldn't you rest too?" I asked.
"We do not require sleep," she said and just continued looking out the window. "This is rest enough for me."
Once the results of my latest search had loaded on my tablet, I shifted my focus from whatever shenanigans Louie was up to and looked at the beauty of all the available swords I could buy.
Name: Runic Longswords of Whispering and Screaming
Type: Dual Swords
Rarity: D Grade
Physical Attack: 107
Magic Attack: 51
Special Ability: -
Attack Speed: Normal
Durability: 12200/12200
Weight: 1940st.
Description: These swords are perfectly balanced, despite the very different runes carved down the sides of their blades. Each sword has a unique ability, the use of which will activate the runes and cause them to glow. One of the swords will scream a single word commanded by the wielder, while the other will whisper a word directly in their enemy's ear.
Price: $261,000
A quarter of a million for D-grade swords!
They were amazing though. Not only did they offer a significant upgrade from the measly 38 Physical Attack my current swords had, but their ability could have some very interesting uses as well. The description didn't mention whether their user would be able to manipulate the voice in which the words were uttered, but a well-timed delivery during a battle could be the deciding factor in who would win.
No matter how great these swords looked, however, I had to at least look at cheaper solutions. The armor pieces had been expensive, but these swords were on an entirely different level. I scrolled down and looked at a couple of mid-range swords.
Name: Igniting Katanas
Type: Dual Swords
Rarity: D Grade
Physical Attack: 83
Magic Attack: 41
Special Ability: -
Attack Speed: Normal
Durability: 8100/8100
Weight: 1927st.
Description: This pair of perfectly balanced katanas was crafted by a dwarven clan living in the bowels of Mount Fuji. The mountain's intense mana leylines have cured their metal with the ability to produce sparks upon contact, occasionally even releasing small bursts of flame. These swords are commonly used in the bogs and marshes because of their effectiveness in cauterizing wounds, and thus preventing the regeneration of trolls in central and northern Japan.
Price: $147,000
This set of swords cost a bit more than half of what the Runic Longswords did but their Physical Attack was also lower. Their ability did look as though it could prove useful but only in very specific situations. In our case, the sparks would be nothing more than a harmless visual effect if it came to having a battle. Not wanting to take too much time pondering over the cost, I decided to just go with the best possible equipment, and Rory would just have to wait a while longer before I'd be able to pay him back.
I added the swords to the cart and looked at what Louie had added. Interestingly, he'd only added two items. A full-body robe and a magic tome as his weapon. That was not to say that his selections were any cheaper--quite the contrary, in fact.

Description : This thick, leather-bound tome can be bound to the soul of its wielder. Once it is bound, it will float around its owner when equipped, mentally following their commands and flipping the pages to their desired spell. This is a very popular weapon of choice for spellcasters who lack opposable thumbs.
