thing happenâ in de fall, when de sap begin ter go down in de grapevimes. Fusâ, when de grapes âuz gethered, de knots begun ter straighten outân Henryâs hâar; en wâen de leaves begin ter fall, Henryâs haâr begin ter drap out; en wâen de vimes âuz bâar, Henryâs head wuz baller ân it wuz in de spring, en he begin ter git ole en stiff in de jâints agâin, en paid no moâ tention ter de gals dyoinâ er de whole winter. En nexâ spring, wâen he rub de sap on agâin, he got young agâin, en so soopl en libely dat none er de young niggers on de plantation couldnâ jump, ner dance, ner hoe ez much cotton ez Henry. But in de fall er de year his grapes begun ter straighten out, en his jâints ter git stiff, en his haâr drap off, en de rheumatiz begin ter wrastle wid âim.
âNow, ef youâd a knowed ole Mars Dugalâ McAdoo, youâd a knowed dat it haâ ter be a mighty rainy day when he couldnâ fine sumpân fer his niggers ter do, en it haâ ter be a mighty little hole he couldnâ crawl thoo, en haâ ter be a monstâus cloudy night wâen a dollar git by him in de dahkness; en wâen he see how Henry git young in de spring en ole in de fall, he âlowed ter hisseâf ez how he could make moâ money outen Henry dan by wukkinâ him in de cotton fielâ. âLong de nexâ spring, atter de sap commenceâ ter rise, en Henry ânâint âis head en commence fer ter git young en soopl, Mars Dugalâ up ân tuk Henry ter town, en sole âim fer fifteen hunderâ dollars. Coâse de man wâat bought Henry didnâ
know nuffin âbout de goopher, en Mars Dugalâ didnâ see no âcasion fer ter tell âim. Long toâds de fall, wâen de sap went down, Henry begin ter git ole again same ez yuzhal, en his noo marster begin ter git skeered lesân he gwine ter lose his fifteen-hunderâ-
dollar nigger. He sent fer a mighty fine doctor, but de medâcine didnâ âpear ter do no good; de goopher had a good holt. Henry tole de doctor âbout de goopher, but de doctor des laff at âim.
âOne day in de winter Mars Dugalâ went ter town, en wuz santerinâ
âlong de Main Street, when who should he meet but Henryâs noo marster. Dey said âHoddy,â en Mars Dugalâ ax âim ter hab a seegyar; en atter dey run on awhile âbout de craps en de weather, Mars Dugalâ ax âim, sorter keerless, like ez ef he des thought of it,â
ââHow you like de nigger I sole you lasâ spring?â
âHenryâs marster shuck his head en knock de ashes offân his seegyar.
ââSpecâ I made a bad bahgin when I bought dat nigger. Henry done good wuk all de summer, but sence de fall set in he âpears ter be sorter pininâ away. Dey ainâ nuffin pertickler de matter wid âimâ
leastways de doctor say soââcepânâ a tech er de rheumatiz; but his haâr is all fell out, en ef he donât pick up his strenk mighty soon, I specâ Iâm gwine ter lose âim.â
âDey smoked on awhile, en bimeby ole mars say, âWell, a bahginâs a bahgin, but you en me is good frenâs, en I doan wanâ ter see you lose all de money you paid fer dat digger [sic]; en ef wâat you say is so, en I ainât âsputinâ it, he ainât wuf much now. I specâs you wukked him too haâd dis summer, er eâse de swamps down here donât agree wid de sanâ-hill nigger. So you des lemme know, en ef he gits any wusser Iâll be willinâ ter gib yer five hundâed dollars fer âim, en take my chances on his livinâ.â
âSho nuff, when Henry begun ter draw up wid de rheumatiz en it look like he gwine ter die fer sho, his noo marster senâ fer Mars Dugalâ, en Mars Dugalâ gin him what he promus, en brung Henry home agâin. He tuk good keer uv âim dyoinâ er de winter,âgive âim wâiskey ter rub his rheumatiz, en terbacker ter smoke, en all he want ter eat,ââcaze a nigger wâat he could make a thousanâ
dollars a year offân didnâ grow on eveây huckleberry bush.
âNexâ spring, wâen de sap ris en Henryâs haâr commenceâ ter sprout, Mars Dugalâ sole âim agâin, down in Robeson County dis time; en he kepâ dat sellinâ business up fer five year er moâ.
Henry nebber say nuffin âbout de goopher ter his noo marsters, âcaze he know he gwine ter be tuk good keer uv de nexâ winter, wâen Mars Dugalâ buy him back. En Mars Dugalâ made ânuff money offân Henry ter buy anudder plantation ober on Beaver Crick.
âBut long âbout de eenâ er dat five year dey come a stranger ter stop at de plantation. De fusâ day he âuz dere he went out wid Mars Dugalâ en spent all de mawninâ lookinâ ober de vimyaâd, en atter dinner dey spent all de eveninâ playinâ kyaâds. De niggers soon âskiverâ dat he wuz a Yankee, en dat he come down ter Norf Câlina fer ter learn de wâite folks how to raise grapes en make wine. He promus Mars Dugalâ he cud make de grapevimes bâar twiceât ez many grapes, en dat de noo wine-press he wuz a-sellinâ
would make moâ dân twiceât ez many gallons er wine. En ole Mars Dugalâ des drunk it all in, des âpeared ter be bewitched wit dat Yankee. Wâen de darkies see dat Yankee runninâ âroun de vimyaâd en digginâ under de grapevimes, dey shuk dere heads, en âlowed dat dey feared Mars Dugalâ losinâ his minâ. Mars Dugalâ had all de dirt dug away fum under de roots er all de scuppernonâ vimes, anâ
let âem stanâ dat away fer a week er moâ. Den dat Yankee made de niggers fix up a mixtry er lime en ashes en manyo, en poâ it rounâ
de roots er de grapevimes. Den he âviseâ Mars Dugalâ fer ter trim de vimes closeât, en Mars Dugalâ tuck ân done eveâything de Yankee tole him ter do. Dyoinâ all er dis time, mind yer, âe wuz libbinâ
offân de fat er de lanâ, at de big house, en playinâ kyards wid Mars Dugalâ eveây night; en dey say Mars Dugalâ losâ moân a thousanâ dollars dyoinâ er de week dat Yankee wuz a runninâ de grapevimes.
âWâen de sap ris nexâ spring, ole Henry ânâinted his head ez yuzhal, en his haâr commenceâ ter grow des de same ez it done eveây year. De scuppernonâ vimes growed monstâs fasâ, en de leaves wuz greener en thicker dan dey eber beân dyowin my remembâance; en Henryâs haâr growed out thicker dan eber, en he âpeared ter git younger ân younger, en soopler ân soopler; en seeinâ ez he wuz shoât er hanâs dat spring, havinâ tuk in considâable noo grounâ, Mars Dugalâ âcluded he wouldnâ sell Henry âtel he git de crap in en de cotton chopâ. So he kepâ Henry on de plantation.
âBut âlong âbout time fer de grapes ter come on de scuppernonâ
vimes, dey âpeared ter come a change ober dem; de leaves wivered en swivelâ up, en de young grapes turnâ yaller, en bimeby eveâybody on de plantation could see dat de whole vimyaâd wuz dyinâ. Mars Dugalâ tuck ân water de vimes en done all he could, but ât wanâ no use: dat Yankee done busâ de watermillyum. One time de vimes picked up a bit, en Mars Dugalâ thought dey wuz gwine ter come out agâin; but dat Yankee done dug too close undeâ
de roots, en prune de branches too close ter de vime, en all dat lime en ashes done burnâ de life outen de vimes, en dey des kepâ a withâinâ en a swivelinâ.
âAll dis time de goopher wuz a-wukkinâ. Wâen de vimes commenceâ
ter wither, Henry commenceâ ter complain er his rheumatiz, en when de leaves begin ter dry up his haâr commenceâ ter drap out. When de vimes fresh up a bit Henry âud git peart agin, en when de vimes wither agin Henry âud git ole agin, en des kepâ gittinâ moâ en moâ
fitten fer nuffin; he des pined away, en fineâly tuk ter his cabin; en when de big vime whar he got de sap ter ânâint his head withered en turned yaller en died, Henry died too,âdes went out sorter like a cannel. Dey didnât âpear ter be nuffin de matter wid âim, âcepân de rheumatiz, but his strenk des dwinelâ away âtel he didnâ hab ernuff lefâ ter draw his bref. De goopher had got de under holt, en thâowed Henry fer good en all dat time.
âMars Dugalâ tuk on mightâly âbout losinâ his vimes en his nigger in de same year; en he swoâ dat ef he could git hold er dat Yankee heâd wear âim ter a frazzle, en den chaw up de frazzle; en heâd done it, too, for Mars Dugalâ âuz a monstâus brash man wâen he once git started. He sot de vimyaâd out ober agin, but it wuz thâee er foâ year befoâ de vimes got ter bâarinâ any scuppernonâs.
âWâen de wah broke out, Mars Dugalâ raiseâ a compâny, en went off ter fight de Yankees. He saw he wuz mighty glad dat wah come, en he des want ter kill a Yankee fer eveây dollar he losâ âlong er dat grape-raisinâ Yankee. En I âspecâ he would a done it, too, ef de Yankees hadnâ sâpicioned sumpân, en killed him fusâ. Atter de sârender ole miss moveâ ter town, de niggers all scattered âway fum de plantation, en de vimyaâd ainâ beân cultervated sence.â
âIs that story true?â asked Annie, doubtfully, but seriously, as the old man concluded his narrative.
âItâs des ez true ez Iâm a-settinâ here, miss. Deyâs a easy way ter prove it: I kin lead de way right ter Henryâs grave ober yander in de plantation buryinâ-grounâ. En I tell yer wâat, marster, I wouldnâ âvise yer to buy dis yer ole vimyaâd, âcaze de goopherâs on it yit, en dey ainâ no tellinâ wâen itâs gwine ter crap out.â
âBut I thought you said all the old vines died.â
âDey did âpear ter die, but a few ov âem come out agâin, en is mixed in mongsâ de yuthers. I ainâ skeered ter eat de grapes, âcaze I knows de old vimes fum de noo ones; but wid strangers dey ainâ no tellinâ wâat might happen. I wouldnâ âvise yer ter buy dis vimyaâd.â
I bought the vineyard, nevertheless, and it has been for a long time in a thriving condition, and is referred to by the local press as a striking illustration of the opportunities open to Northern capital in the development of Southern industries. The luscious scuppernong holds first rank among our grapes, though we cultivate a great many other varieties, and our income from grapes packed and shipped to the Northern markets is quite considerable.
I have not noticed any developments of the goopher in the vineyard, although I have a mild suspicion that our colored assistants do not suffer from want of grapes during the season.
I found, when I bought the vineyard, that Uncle Julius had occupied a cabin on the place for many years, and
