Fourth, the Silent majority surely showed uncanny political wisdom to give positive verdict to those performed rather well in the UDF Govt amidst the tirade against them. They retained the former Chief Minister to lead the opposition. They did not vote out decent performers of the likes of Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, KC Venugopals, KP Anilkumars and the former Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan. It is in a way sad that a good parliamentarian like TM Jacob and a promising minister like Dr MK Muneer lost out in the melee. The most significant feat that stands out in this regard is the election of young and promising Ganesh Kumar in Pathanapuram and the rejection of his father R Balakrishna Pillai, veteran of many elections, in the adjacent constituency in Kottarakkara. Doesn’t it speak volumes of the political sensibility of the people ok Kerala?
Last, but not the least, the Silent Majority showed utmost respect to Secularism, one of the cardinal principles of our Constitution by routing Muslim League and BJP in their bastions. Who would now dare to tell that we, the Silent Majority, the common people of Kerala lack political acumen and has lost the strength to react against the forces that may jeopardise the social well being of this God’s Own Country? Kudos to the Silent Majority :
06. Salaam Kalam : 28 Jul 2007
Mahatman!
We salute Thee!
When you stepped down the stairs
leaving aside the ‘Highest Office’
once again we endear you
to our hearts!
Yet again we yearn to be
enlightened by the flame in you
and congregate inner strength
to realize your ‘three visions’
Blessed are that petite village in Tamilakam
and the reticent house, neat and tidy,
where you were born and grew up
braving the obscurity of poverty
without slightest whimper!
Sanctified are the teachers who
taught you the fist lessons in life
that they loved and adored you so much
for they knew the price in you
You worked hard and smart through the years
that the whole of space science capitulated
before your perseverance and commitment
that portrayed India in the space map
Indian tricolor flew higher and higher
in the realm of outer space
with you singing ‘Janaganamana’ in perfect rhythm
we, 112 crores joining you in chorus
As the first citizen of India
you embodied our aspirations for excellence
million roses bloomed, million hearts filled
with joy, chanted in one voice ‘Salam Kalam’
We rue that you are not there once again
in that Lutyens master-piece
Divine flora in Mughal garden
that you nurtured all these years
still shedding tears! :
07. You Bump You Die! .....Who Bothers: 20 Aug 2007
Yesterday I had my breath stopped for a moment. I was going to Thirumala from Edapazhinji in my car. In the Pangode Cantt area near the turning towards the station canteen my car was in the air for at least 5 secs and my heart stopped beating for more than 2 secs. Thank God both came back to normal to my surprise! I ran over a bump, which is unmarked, being dusk I couldn’t see the bump from distance. There are at least eight such bumps in this road between Edappazhinji Junc & Thirurmala. None of them is marked. Normally road markings are accurate and excellent in Cantt areas. It is really surprising that these bumps are not marked by the Cantt authorities, as they should be. If not, take my word, some youngsters speeding their bikes or cars will get killed on one of those bumps. But who cares!
This road is not exceptional. There is no system for marking the bumps in entire Tvm City. Can u believe! There are 6 bumps in the 300 m stretch from Medical College Junction to SAT. None of them is marked; of course if any one get hurt jumping over the bump the Casualty ward is next door! There is a notorious bump in front of Holy Angels Convent intended to slow down the vehicles, of course unmarked. Speeding cars & bikes apply sudden brake and you will find one of these days some children get hit by suddenly braking cars or bikes losing their direction.
There are many bumps indiscreetly planted on the roads of Trivandrum City. No one bothers to mark them; they are left as hidden but certain death traps. Public doesn’t know whom to complain. Leave aside bumps, there are innumerable potholes, uncovered manholes waiting for some unfortunate ones to get trapped and wounded fatally or even sent to heaven. It is fine that we are doing up our roads. But someone has to ensure the road safety aspects too.
You and me can’t raise hue and cry because common public has no meaning or relevance in our society. If you want to live, live your life as of now and be prepared to die peacefully on one of the bumps, manholes or potholes. You are destined for it & can’t escape!
08. Can’t We Amend the Constitution? 28 Nov 2008
A lot has been discussed in the media, both print and visual, about the refusal of Somnath Chatterjea to resign as the Speaker of Loksabha and the aftermath. Without going to the details of arguments and counterarguments in his favour and against may I suggest the following for consideration of experts in constitution?
If my understanding is correct there is nothing in the constitution that prevents any member of Parliament from resigning from his party when he gets elected as the Speaker of the house, perform his duties as the Chief Executive of the Parliament for the term with utmost immunity to party affiliations and rejoin his party when he relinquishes his position as the Speaker. However this righteous step has not been resorted to by any of the Speakers so far in Loksabha and State Assemblies.
Hence, it is recommended that an amendment to the Constitution may be made by which it becomes mandatory that any one who gets elected as the Speaker of the house resigns from his party and continues to be a non-party man for the entire term of the house and rejoins his party when he is relinquished from his post.
The argument of the CPM that the Speaker has to be from the Ruling Party does not stand to logic because the very idea of neutrality of the Speaker gets diluted without doubt.
09 : National Government: 12 Dec 2008
I am sorry no National Government pic,LOL
Bombay 26/11. Every Indian has to bow his head in shame for the greatest democracy in the world that we boast of has once again been proved to be the softest target of international terrorism by a score of unscrupulous terrorists. We haven’t learnt yet how to combat the biggest challenge to our nationhood. The only way to get out of this vicious situation is to form a National Government (beyond the boundaries of party politics) with people having the 4 Cs, Character, Competence, Concern and Commitment. Could our political pundits who script destiny of the common man on the streets of India give a thought to this?
India is facing two severe threats at the moment. Global Recession on and International Terrorism. The former has affected countries all over the world and is not so disastrous as the latter. We can slowly come out of it without losing our lives and a great nation like ours will. But the latter is a monster that has taken its toll many a times on the people of India in the last few years, the latest being the most barbarous attack on Mumbai on the black Wednesday. Neither the earlier NDA Govt nor the present UPA Govt had been able to prevent these strikes by the terrorists. Lot of political jugglery had been witnessed by the people of India over these years and we are back in square one again. The common man on the streets of this nation lives in fear and anguish for he doesn't know how will be hit and where? We owe our lives to those brave men in uniform every time we are struck. After every terrorist action the Home Minister sums up the whole thing with a somber face in three most commonly abused words in this country "I am sorry!” Every time we get back to normal life with the fervent hope that we won’t have to face a similar situation once again. But the last few days proved us wrong and shattered our faith in our political system.
10. Silent Majority is in a Fix!: 21 Jan 2011
Thank God! We, the Silent Majority (called as SM hereinafter) which includes you and me, have been acknowledged as the deciding factor in the forthcoming elections by political pundits no less than Sebastian Paul & Prof NN Karassery for example. So beware! The two prominent fronts viz LDF & UDF will be on our door steps from tomorrow to convince us that this tiny State of Kerala will go to Arabian Sea if the front they represent is not elected to form the next Government. But the bewildered SM is bound to ask a very legitimate but thorny question to these vote mongers as to who is going to lead us for the next five years in their earnest struggle to make this state where “ Milk & Honey” will flow so freely! I am one for sure that you will get no straight answer from either of the two bcos they themselves don’t know or pretend not to know the answer!
Just have a close look at this issue. Can the LDF guarantee that VS would lead the Govt if they are elected to power? There are umpteen numbers of statements that we hear on TV and read from print media giving conflicting stances, on one hand Pinarai states that VS is CPI (M)’s undisputed leader, but never says that he would lead the Govt. Today, EP Jayarajan says Kodiyeri is the ‘therali” of LDF. Sivadasa Menon is on record asserting that VS is still the undisputed leader of LDF, but he sys leader will be elected by the legislatures! What do all these mean? What message that the none-too politically wise SM get? Yesterday VS, in Palghat, spoke with rejuvenated vigour and his body language suggests that he is rest assured that he would be the CM if LDF wins. But SM asks, in view of the most hilarious drama that we witnessed in declaring his candidature, what is the surety that VS wins again from Malampuzha? What is the surety, even if he wins, he would be elected the leader of CPI (M) legislative party? Isn’t it paradoxical that in West Bengal CPI (M) says Budhadev Bhattacharjee is their leader and Chief Ministerial candidate and in Kerala the people is being kept in suspense as to who would be the their CM if LDF wins this election. Pinarai would definitely find a spiral answer to circumvent this question! Again the poor SM remains the same old donkey carrying the bundle of dirty linen with out knowing what he carries!
Now look at the other side! Picture is really murkier! UDF doesn’t have even declared who would be their Chief Ministerial candidate. SM feels that UDF really suffers from an identity crisis in the issue of leadership! Alas! The SM is in dark as to who contests where! Argument maybe it is still not time to disclose! Let Soniaji be back from London! But
