11. Again SM is at loss ! : 02 Mar 2011
It seems that the Silent Majority (SM for short) is taken for granted by the political parties and their eloquent spokespersons who conveniently forget or pretend to forget that the Silent Majority which includes you and me is the one who is going to decide the ultimate fate of the their so-called fronts. It is the firm conviction of the SM that we hold the key when it comes in the final analysis as to who would rule this State for the next five years.
It is merely a statement of fact that a month ago the LDF had secured a firm impression on the minds of SM as the better choice for being elected to power once again. This impression was the offshoot of various positive factors, which the Govt led by VS Achuthanandan, could boast of at different levels of governance. The forward looking policies and posturing aimed at uplifting the poor and downtrodden exhibited by VS and his ministry have won many a hearts of the SM who does not forget to closely watch the adventures & misadventures of the LDF Govt as also the functioning of UDF as a constructive opposition. Progress that has been achieved in the Vallarpadam project, Smart City, Vizhinjam project and the earnest and continued fight against mafias of different colour & tenor and corrupt practices in government and society as a whole has given the LDF a definite edge over the UDF and set a very strong platform from where they could have taken off into an extremely promising plane in the election campaign. UDF on the other hand was in a vicious self-destruction syndrome bcos of the CWC, Adarsh, 2G and S spectrum and CVC scams that mushroomed one after the other shaking the Central Govt to its tilt. These tsunami waves of mass destruction of faith hit the Kerala political scene too. Thus, some one like you and me had perceived that VS was generally accepted as the automatic choice for the chief Minister once again he couldn’t be grudged.
12. Where are our so called celebrities?: 28 Mar 2011
In any democracy the celebrities, normally we call as our “Samskarika Nayakanmar” in Malyalam, do have a very strong influence on the common man, generally known as the Silent Majority, in their decision making in every walk of human activity especially when you are on the verge of an election for a new Government. It astonishes one and all that apart from Sukumar Azhikkode who excels in appearing every Saturday in Vachakamela with his “Avasarochitam Comments ” and occasional words of wisdom from the nonagenarian legal mind of VR Krishna Iyer the Silent majority are deprived of valuable dissertation from our elite group of personalities whom you and I adore dearly and listen to eagerly. If simple souls in the Silent Majority feel aggrieved on the total apathy being shown by our elites on issues concerning human values they cannot be grudged.
Case in point is the most unfortunate use of the word “Oruthi” by our respected Chief Minster when he was referring to Sindhu Joy who resigned from the CPI (M). The woman folk of this well educated State never expected such a casual selection of vocabulary from the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala of all the politicians to describe a woman political activist who had shed sweat and tears for the party for more than 15 long years. Silent majority would have been much happier if any of the women activists and communicators like Sugathakumari, Arnudathi Roy, Justice Sreedevi, Rose Mary, Leela Menon and strong political Commentators like Zakharia, Dr Babu Paul, Alphonse Knnantahanm to name a few had shown slightest concern over the issue! Are we to believe that the women of Kerala are destined to suffer every ignominy?
13. An appeal to the silent Majority : 22 Apr 2011
You and I belong to the largest class of Indians called the Silent Majority. We are destined, not by default but by design, to be patient as Mother Earth for our perceptions, concerns, snivels and appeals are never heard or understood by those politicians, who live in glass houses, in the seat of power in the Parliament and in the North Block. Otherwise can any one explain why this so called greatest democracy in the world does not have a flawless instrument to fight and minimize corruption in public domain in place even after 64 years of independence?
Yes, it is our fault! We have been sleeping like Rip Van Winkle for the last 46 years with the fervent hope that one day our learned politicians would deliver us a Lokpal Bill to fight against corruption in a platter. Even after 46 years Mr. Winkle did not wake up, he had to be forcefully woken up by a septuagenarian Gandhian by the name Anna Hazare and few righteous Indians like Kiran Bedi and Aravind Kejrival. Once woken up from the slumber the Silent Majority launched a movement “India fights Corruption” which caught the imagination of whole of India and is history now!
Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre in their famous book Freedom at Midnight wrote about that one man unarmed army of Mahatma who could avert a catastrophic Hindu - Muslim riot in Bengal while one hundred thousand strong British Army couldn’t prevent that happening in Punjab in 1947. After 64 years the unarmed army of common people of India led by a disciple of Gandhi could bring down a Govt which did not feel or pretended not to feel the pulse of its people to its knees in four days without shedding a single drop of blood. It is unbelievable that
the people of India, especially the exuberant youth, could wage its war against corruption with so much restraint and peace strictly adhering to ‘Ahimsa’ as advised by Anna! Be proud that you are also one among them!
Now the fight is not over, it has started only. Many sleepless nights are to be borne by this Nation before we get the so-called Lokpal bill passed by the Parliament and implemented in right earnest. The smear campaign against the Bhushans and the most regrettable barb by Digvijaya Singh on Justice Hegde speak volumes of the concerted attempts to derail the Lokpalbill in its entirety. It is here that we have to be more vigilant and most positive to ensure that our efforts to get the bill approved in the Monsoon session of the Parliament are not jeopardized by technicalities that may surface from time to time. Need of the hour, therefore, is to strengthen the hands of the members of the drafting Committee from the civil society. Lets once gain show our unity and strength to the Govt by not faltering under pressure that is being mounted on us through dubious means, not even sparing the professional and personal integrity of Justice Santhosh Hegde.
14. An open letter to Aravind Kejrival : 24 Apr 2011
Dear Shri Arvind Kejriwal
I like to place on record my sincere thanks to you for having replied to me despite of your extremely busy schedule. I am sorry for taking your valuable time.
Let me introduce myself first. I am a retired Col from Indian Army settled in Trivandrum. It is an irony that common citizens of India, whom I call ‘the Silent Majority’ whose perceptions, concerns and snivels are not heard by those in power all these years, are taken for granted. I earnestly felt that I should somehow project my thoughts which I feel would generally be the same as that of the Silent Majority of India through some medium for our younger generation would turn round and ask the question “what have you have been doing all these 64 years? We are free from British Rule but not free from corruption and nepotism”.
I would like to put across to you certain perceptions which I gathered while interacting with people who remain silent for they don’t have a medium for expressing those, may be right or wrong.
No doubt that the common man in Kerala appreciates your fight against corruption and urges you to continue vigorously till the Jan Lokpal is passed and implemented. Questions raised by many why the father & son combine of Bhushans are there in the panel. Granting the argument that their expertise, talent and negotiation skills are very much essential for the tedious task ahead question asked was whether the same couldn’t would have been available from the Bhushans even one of them is not officially included in the panel. Instead, had there been another legal luminary like Harish Salve for example the whole controversy couldn’t have been avoided? I personally do not subscribe to this view. Now that it is clearly evident from the media discussions that there is well thought out plot by interested parties to delay & derail the whole exercise we feel that the panel members and leaders like Swami Agnivesh & Kiran Bedi should not present themselves for media debates but carry on with the drafting process. Will it not be a fair idea to leave for the well respected members like Vishwa Bandu Gupta, TSR Subramniam, Justice JS Varma to name few and highly respected politicians like Somnath Chatterjea, Sitaram Yechury and so on Another concern expressed was that not much publicity for the movement is ensured in the regional visual media in South especially in Kerala. Time permitting, we would love to see and listen to Anna Hazare anywhere in Kerala, which would be covered by all regional channels in Kerala without exception. A personal message from me! While in the Nidhi Razdan show yesterday in NDTV I had to witness the most unfortunate question “ Why Anna went fasting then? “ from Manish Tiwary as a retort to Swami Agnivsesh when he explained that the Govt had earlier accepted more than 90% of the suggestions of Jan Lokpal draft. This is the first time one could hear some one from the Congress questioning Anna’s sincerity and wisdom! Unfortunately the remark went unnoticed! A clear-cut example of the attitude of the Congress Party! May be taken note of. Now that Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjea have assured that they all are for a well meaning and well drafted Lokpal bill lets work on towards that end and lets not be distracted by hollow and indiscreet comments and flamboyant vocabulary from people like Manish Tiwari & Digvijaya Singh. Lastly the Silent Majority congratulates the Panel in succeeding to persuade Justice Santhosh Hegde to continue.
Arvind, I am sorry I took lot of your time. But I couldn’t help for I was feeling guilty myself if I don’t express my views.
Wishing you all the best
Scorpio
15. An Open letter to Anna Hazare: 30 Apr 2011
Dear Annaji
We, the Silent Majority of this country, had the mortification of listening to three explosive revelations by Julian Assange, the Wiki Leaks chief when he was interviewed by Arnab Goswamy day before in Times Now. He revealed that there are more Indian deposits in the Swiss banks than any other nationality, there are Indian names in the Swiss bank list that is going to be made public soon and Indian government's response to the expose was one of the worst in the world, Don’t they shatter the pride and integrity of people of India and put us to shame?
Marauding of Indian wealth worth of billions of dollars, that belongs to the tax payers of free India which include you and me, by a deceitful
